Google May Not Be Evil, But...
2008-01-30 11:26:19 by Editor in Cheap Hack

Domain Name Wire has it right: Google suckered us. First there were rumors that it was going to block Adwords on all domains in the first five days of registration. This would have put a serious crimp in domain tasting. Then it announced that it was actually only going after domain kiting. Why Google drew a distinction wasn't clear, as its announcements are always somewhat fuzzy on such details. Now it turns out that prior to all of this, ICANN had already resolved to impose fees on domains deleted in the AGP (Add Grace Period). Call me cynical, but I think Google knew about this and decided to get some cheap "not evil" publicity out of it by taking a stand that had absolutely no courage behind it. Taking this stand would have shown some backbone a year ago, but instead Google decided to profit off of domain tasting and kiting for another year and only do the right thing when the money was off the table anyway.
