An antimalware organization has called on Apple to beef up its Safari Web browser to protect users from exploits that could let attackers download malicious code to a Mac or Windows user’s desktop.

Stopbadware.org, a group founded by Google, Chinese computer maker Lenovo Group and Sun, on Monday asked Apple to reconsider its refusal to address the flaw as a security problem.

“StopBadware.org believes that users should have control over software being downloaded to their computers, and we encourage Apple to reconsider its stance and treat this as the security issue that it is,” Stopbadware.org said in an appeal posted to its Web site.

It would have been difficult for anyone to have watched the CNN video yesterday morning regarding animal abuse at the Westland/Hallmark meat processing plant and to not have felt outraged.

The video, which was covertly recorded by a factory employee, showed cows being pushed, dragged and prodded in order to get them into the slaughter house. As was obvious from the video, some of these animals were so sick that they could not stand up on their own and were "scooped" up by fork lifts and dropped into the killing area.

The reporter commented how these animals' symptoms were similar to that of the fatal "mad cow" disease. However, that did not stop the meat company from including them with the others that were being butchered and sold to fast food restaurants and to schools to feed the nation's children.

Yesterday, two fast food chains: "Jack in the box' and "In-out burgers", stated that they were no longer purchasing beef products from Westalnd/Hallmark. Today, 150 school districts dropped the meat company as their vendor.

What is difficult to understand is how the company President, Steve Mendell, could come out with a statement assuring the public that they "have met the highest standards for harvesting and processing meat". Either he is of the belief that the general public are about as sharp as bowling balls or the industry must have some really low standards overall.

Another difficult thing to understand is the fact that Westland/Hallmark claimed to have a full time USDA veterinary medical officer on site IN ADDITION to a full time officer from USDA's Grading Service. "Full time" should mean that they are always there durng work hours, should it not? It seems that the USDA has a lot of questions to answer.

It is ironic that last week we saw so much in the press about the Congressional hearing into Roger Clemens and the allegations that he took steroids. If he did, he shouldn't have, but is it right to devote so much attention and resources to an athelete when hundreds of thousands - possibly millions, of peoples lives and health are jeopardized by unscrupulous business practices that should have been detected by the very Govt. Agency assigned to over see such abuse?

I for one, will be reading labels in the supermarket more closely in the future. I would suggest that all of you do the same.

Visit Sexton Executive Security at www.sextonsecurity.com

With Junipers long awaited release of their EX switch line, many have said that there is just nothing distinguishing about the line up. Just speeds and feeds. Others are saying that the real secret sauce is the JUNOS. That very well may be. However, Tim Greene in this article says that Junipers built in NAC may be Junipers not-so-secret weapon. He quotes two analysts, Phil Hochmuth of Yankee Group and Rob Whiteley of Forrest-er. The article rightfully points out that Junipers competition in the switch market is Cisco and HP ProCurve.

It then goes on from there to talk about Junipers new ability to perform access control at layer 4 with identity based access control with ACLs in addition to VLANs. You can perform QoS as part of a users access rights and they can mirror traffic and send it to a Juniper IDP for post-admission NAC. Juniper wants to evolve NetScreen Security Manager into a central policy-control platform. This is all great stuff, however it ain't new. My research shows that HP ProCurve (the 2nd leading switch vendor) actually does much if not all of this right now. Using the ProCurve IDM (identity driven management) application which is now bundled on ProCurve's NAC appliance with their NAC application, they can do this already. They can do the QoS thing as well as sending the traffic to several IPS brands. In fact a close reading of what ProCurve's security capabilities show that there is little if anything ground breaking in what Juniper is advocating and what these analysts seem to be eating up.

Yes, Junipers entry I think does spell C-O-M-P-E-T-I-T-I-O-N for the likes of Nevis and ConSentry (sorry Dan and Dom), but that is not what Juniper is in this game for. They have to keep their eye on the prize. And the prize is taking market share from Cisco and HP ProCurve. If this is all they got, I am going to have to agree with those folks who are asking Juniper "where's the beef?"

I returned from being locked out of the world’s technology blogs by the Chinese government, insuring a harmonious society, of course ; only to tune back in and read this interesting post by TIBCO’s business-rules evangelist, Paul Vincent, Calling all (insert CEP vendor name here) professionals!

Curious, I followed Paul’s link and found no references, or job openings, at TIBCO for CEP or BusinessEvents related positions.

Paul, where are the TIBCO CEP related jobs (the beef!)?

Inquiring minds want to know!
