      <title><![CDATA[Blurring the Lines Between Managed Service Provider and Cloud Computing]]></title>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>VMware made big announcements at their <a href="http://www.vmworld.com/index.jspa" target="_blank">VMworld conference</a> back in September, talking about adding on a slew of virtualization management functionality to a revamped vCenter and extending into the “cloud” with vCloud services. Like most people, I had a lot of skepticism about what vCloud really meant; was this just more hype trying to take advantage of the cloud computing buzz? Certainly CEO Paul Maritz came from this world and virtualization itself (and especially vMotion) is an enabling technology for cloud computing. But how ready were VMware and its ecosystem of partner vendors to actually fulfill on the promise?</p>
<p>So I was very interested when I heard that <a href="http://opusinteractive.com/" target="_blank">Opus Interactive</a>, a customer of ours, had “joined the VMware vCloud initiative as a <a href="http://www.opusinteractive.com/news_detail.asp?item=40" target="_blank">VMware Service Provider</a>”. I talked to Eric Hulbert, CTO of Opus Interactive, to get some details directly from the source.</p>

<p>Eric shared our own caution about making “cloud-ready” announcements. There have simply been too many companies talking about cloud solutions that lack any substance – usually based on definitions of cloud computing that are hazy or just too broad. The backlash against the cloud hype is often quite justified. But in Opus’ case, there are real components that if they don’t add up to a “full” cloud computing solution just yet, are well on their way – and enabled by <a href="http://www.vmware.com/partners/vip/service-providers/" target="_blank">VMware’s program for service providers</a> (VSPP).</p>
<p>Opus Interactive is <a href="http://www.viddler.com/explore/sciencelogic/videos/3" target="_blank">serious about virtualization</a>, which is an indispensable tool in their stated goal of creating a high-density micro-data center with the smallest footprint possible. They are 100% wind-powered and have already virtualized much of their data center, reducing the amount of hardware necessary to run the business and driving down costs to produce even more competitive advantage in a crowded marketplace.</p>
<p>VSPP for vCloud provides a rental model of VMware licenses – e.g., for Enterprise ESX or VDI. VMware Service Providers report on their customers’ virtual machines (vm) and pay only for what is actually used. This model lets Opus Interactive quickly spin up a vm to get a new customer up and running in about an hour and stay very cost competitive at the same time; Opus offers their <a href="http://opusinteractive.com/vClustr.asp" target="_blank">vClustr entry-level virtual server</a> for only $99.</p>
<p>Cost-effective, rapidly scalable computing “on-demand” based on shared resources, managed by “expert” third-parties, enabled by virtualization technology and pay-per-use vm licenses. Cloud computing? Instead of thinking about a single definition of cloud computing, perhaps it’s more relevant as the market matures to think about a continuum of cloud computing. And by that definition, Opus Interactive is providing cloud services, enabled by VMware’s VSP program. Next on the schedule, automated provisioning and perhaps in the future, API’s that make it even easier for application developers to test and deploy apps on Opus Interactive’s cloud platform – which, by the way, uses <a href="http://www.sciencelogic.com/products.htm" target="_blank">EM7</a> for its core management solution.</p>

There's a common misunderstanding that in order for a malware campaigner or scammer to launch a localized attack speaking the native language of their potential victims, they need to speak the local language. This misconception is largely based on the fact that a huge number of people remain unaware on how core strategic business practices have been in operation across the cybercrime underground for the last couple of years.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://ddanchev.blogspot.com/2008/02/localizing-cybercrime-cultural.html">Outsourcing the localization process</a> (translation services for spam/phishing/malware campaigns) has been happening for a while, courtsy of DIY servics ensuring complete anonymity of their customers. Interestingly, the translators may in fact be unaware that the advertising channels the service is using is directly attracting everyone from the bottom to the top of the cybercriminal food chain as a customer. Sometimes, it's services like this that open a new market segment covering an untapped opportunity, with this particular service already pointing out that it's charging cheaper than their competitors.<br />

I'm particularly curious how is a contractor(translator) going to react to a situation when a large scale malware campaign speaking several different languages tell a fake story that the contractor might have recently translated for them. With the employer positioning itself as a fully legitimate company, whereas its customers requesting localized version of texts for the spam/phishing/malware campaigns are the "usual suspects", the contractors would continue allowing cybercriminals the opportunity to build more authenticity within their campaigns.<br />

      <title><![CDATA[Skein and SHA-3 News]]></title>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There are two bugs in the Skein code.  They are subtle and esoteric, but they're there.  We have revised both the reference and optimized code -- and provided new test vectors -- on the <a href="http://www.schneier.com/skein.html">Skein website</a>.  A <a href="http://www.schneier.com/skein.pdf">revision of the paper</a> -- Version 1.1 -- has new IVs, new test vectors, and also fixes a few typos in the paper.</p>

<blockquote>Errata: Version 1.1 of the paper, reference, and optimized code corrects an error in which the length of the configuration string was passed in as the size of the internal block (256 bits for Skein-256, 512 for Skein-512, and 1024 for Skein-1024), instead of a constant 256 bits for all three sizes.  This error has no cryptographic significance, but affected the test vectors and the initialization values.  The revised code also fixes a bug in the MAC mode key processing.  This bug does not affect the NIST submission in any way.</blockquote>

<p><a href="http://csrc.nist.gov/groups/ST/hash/sha-3/index.html">NIST has received</a> 64 submissions.  (<a href="http://www.cio.com/article/461164/Amateurs_and_Pros_Vie_to_Build_New_Crypto_Standard">This article</a> interviews one of the submitters, who is fifteen.)  Of those, <a href="http://ehash.iaik.tugraz.at/wiki/The_SHA-3_Zoo">28 are public</a> and six have been broken.  NIST is going through the submissions right now, making sure they are complete and proper.  Their goal is to publish the accepted submissions by the end of the month, in advance of the <a href="http://csrc.nist.gov/groups/ST/hash/timeline.html">Third Cryptographic Hash Workshop</a> to be held in Belgium right after <a href="https://www.cosic.esat.kuleuven.be/fse2009/index.shtml">FSE</a> in February.  They expect to quickly make a first cut of algorithms -- hopefully to about a dozen -- and then give the community about a year of cryptanalysis before making a second cut in 2010.</p>

<p>Lastly, <a href="http://www.darkreading.com/blog/archives/2008/11/bending_skein_c.html">this</a> is a really nice article on Skein.</p>

<blockquote>These submissions make some accommodation to the Core 2 processor. They operate in "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_endian" target="new">little-endian</a>" mode (a quirk of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86" target="new">Intel-like processors</a> that reads some bytes in reverse order). They also allow a large file to be broken into chunks to split the work across multiple processors.

<p>However, virtually all of the contest submissions share the performance problem mentioned above. The logic they use won't optimally fit within the constraints of a Intel Core 2 processor. Most will perform as bad or worse than the existing SHA-1 algorithm.</p>

<p>One exception to this is <a href="http://www.schneier.com/skein.html" target="new">Skein</a>, created by several well-known cryptographers and noted pundit <a href="http://www.schneier.com/" target="new">Bruce Schneier</a>. It was designed specifically to exploit all three of the Core 2 execution units and to run at a full 64-bits. This gives it roughly four to 10 times the logic density of competing submissions.</p>

<p>This is what I meant by the <i><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0133093/" target="new">Matrix</a></i> quote above. They didn't bend the spoon; they bent the crypto algorithm. They moved the logic operations around in a way that wouldn't weaken the crypto, but would strengthen its speed on the Intel Core 2.</p>

<p>In their <a href="http://www.schneier.com/skein.pdf" target="new">paper</a> (PDF), the authors of Skein express surprise that a custom silicon <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Application-specific_integrated_circuit" target="new">ASIC</a> implementation is not any faster than the software implementation. They shouldn't be surprised. Every time you can redefine a problem to run optimally in software, you will reach the same speeds you get with optimized ASIC hardware. The reason software has a reputation of being slow is because people don't redefine the original problem.</blockquote></p>

<p>That's exactly what we were trying to do.</p><div class="feedflare">

<blockquote><strong>Executive Summary</strong>

<p>Skein is a new family of cryptographic hash functions.  Its design combines speed, security, simplicity, and a great deal of flexibility in a modular package that is easy to analyze.</p>

<p>Skein is fast.  Skein-512 -- our primary proposal -- hashes data at 6.1 clock cycles per byte on a 64-bit CPU.  This means that on a 3.1 GHz x64 Core 2 Duo CPU, Skein hashes data at 500 MBytes/second per core -- almost twice as fast as SHA-512 and three times faster than SHA-256.  An optional hash-tree mode speeds up parallelizable implementations even more.  Skein is fast for short messages, too; Skein-512 hashes short messages in about 1000 clock cycles.</p>

<p>Skein is secure.  Its conservative design is based on the Threefish block cipher.  Our current best attack on Threefish-512 is on 25 of 72 rounds, for a safety factor of 2.9. For comparison, at a similar stage in the standardization process, the AES encryption algorithm had an attack on 6 of 10 rounds, for a safety factor of only 1.7.  Additionally, Skein has a number of provably secure properties, greatly increasing confidence in the algorithm.</p>

<p>Skein is simple.  Using only three primitive operations, the Skein compression function can be easily understood and remembered.  The rest of the algorithm is a straightforward iteration of this function.</p>

<p>Skein is flexible.  Skein is defined for three different internal state sizes -- 256 bits, 512 bits, and 1024 bits -- and any output size.  This allows Skein to be a drop-in replacement for the entire SHA family of hash functions.  A completely optional and extendable argument system makes Skein an efficient tool to use for a very large number of functions: a PRNG, a stream cipher, a key derivation function, authentication without the overhead of HMAC, and a personalization capability.  All these features can be implemented with very low overhead.  Together with the Threefish large-block cipher at Skein core, this design provides a full set of symmetric cryptographic primitives suitable for most modern applications.</p>

<p>Skein is efficient on a variety of platforms, both hardware and software.  Skein-512 can be implemented in about 200 bytes of state.  Small devices, such as 8-bit smart cards, can implement Skein-256 using about 100 bytes of memory.  Larger devices can implement the larger versions of Skein to achieve faster speeds.</p>

<p>Skein was designed by a team of highly experienced cryptographic experts from academia and industry, with expertise in cryptography, security analysis, software, chip design, and implementation of real-world cryptographic systems.  This breadth of knowledge allowed them to create a balanced design that works well in all environments.</blockquote></p>

<p><a href="http://www.schneier.com/code/skein_NIST_CD_101308.zip">Here's</a> source code, text vectors, and the like for Skein.  Watch the <a href="http://www.schneier.com/skein.html">Skein website</a> for any updates -- new code, new results, new implementations, the proofs.</p>

<p>NIST's deadline is Friday.  It seems as if everyone -- including many amateurs -- is working on a hash function, and I predict that NIST will receive at least 80 submissions.  (Compare this to the 21 submissions NIST received -- five were rejected as not being complete --  for the AES competition in 1998.)  I expect people to start posting their submissions over the weekend.  (Ron Rivest already <a href="http://people.csail.mit.edu/rivest/Rivest-TheMD6HashFunction.ppt">presented</a> MD6 at Crypto in August.)  Probably the best place to watch for new hash functions is <a href="http://planeta.terra.com.br/informatica/paulobarreto/hflounge.html">here</a>; I'll try to keep a listing of the submissions myself.</p>

<p>The selection process will take around four years.  I've previously called this sort of thing a cryptographic demolition derby -- last one left standing wins -- but that's only half true.  Certainly all the groups will spend the next couple of years trying to cryptanalyze each other, but in the end there will be a bunch of unbroken algorithms; NIST will select one based on performance and features.</p>

<p>NIST has stated that the goal of this process is not to choose the best standard but to choose a good standard.  I think that's smart of them; in this process, "best" is the enemy of "good."  My advice is this: immediately sort them based on performance and features.  Ask the cryptographic community to focus its attention on the top dozen, rather than spread its attention across all 80 -- although I also expect that most of the amateur submissions will be rejected by NIST for not being "complete and proper."  Otherwise, people will break the easy ones and the better ones will go unanalyzed.</p><div class="feedflare">

<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt"><FONT size=3><FONT face=Calibri>I find that legacy code poses a unique challenge for organizations rolling out a new security process.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>Often, the resources dedicated to maintaining older code are a small fraction of those devoted to new features or products.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>Furthermore, the original developers for such features have often moved on, leaving no subject matter experts to drive reviews.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>The astute reader will ask “How do I apply the principles of the Microsoft SDL to legacy code when I have no development resources and nobody knows how it works?”<o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt"><FONT size=3><FONT face=Calibri>The answer is “Start small, and build expertise over time.”<o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt"><B style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal"><FONT size=3><FONT face=Calibri>A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats<o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></B></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt"><FONT size=3><FONT face=Calibri>The best thing a security engineering team can do to improve security in the short term is to drive code quality, and the first step in this process is to define and enforce a secure coding standard.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>This helps on two fronts:<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN><o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></P>
<P class=MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in; TEXT-INDENT: -0.25in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1"><SPAN style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin"><SPAN style="mso-list: Ignore"><FONT face=Calibri size=3>1.</FONT><SPAN style="FONT: 7pt 'Times New Roman'">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </SPAN></SPAN></SPAN><FONT size=3><FONT face=Calibri>It will improve code quality and reduce implementation flaws across the entire code base.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>Unlike other security processes, driving a secure coding standard is <I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">relatively</I> easy to accomplish across an entire code base, regardless of the code’s age, by a focused security team.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>That is not to say that it is easy without qualification – a large batch of spaghetti code will require a lot of work to untangle!<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>Such an effort can only be called “easy” when compared to, say, comprehensive identification and remediation of design flaws across legacy features.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>Even so, improving code quality through the use of secure coding standards offers a unique combination of high impact, applicability to features, and ability to be carried out by a core team that makes it a sensible first step.<o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></P>
<P class=MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in"><o:p><FONT face=Calibri size=3>&nbsp;</FONT></o:p></P>
<P class=MsoListParagraphCxSpLast style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt 0.5in; TEXT-INDENT: -0.25in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1"><SPAN style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin"><SPAN style="mso-list: Ignore"><FONT face=Calibri size=3>2.</FONT><SPAN style="FONT: 7pt 'Times New Roman'">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </SPAN></SPAN></SPAN><FONT size=3><FONT face=Calibri>The security team might notice that some sections of code have more standards violations or outright flaws than others.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>This is an instance of vulnerability clustering, a concept that has been used to predict vulnerability rates and improve quality in the functional realm.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>The evidence is anecdotal, but it stands to reason that portions of code that consistently violate secure coding standards are good places to start looking for other classes of security flaw.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>These are security hotspots, and should be high on the prioritized list for further review.<o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt"><FONT size=3><FONT face=Calibri>Security testing may also be applied to legacy code, but initial activities should be considered on a case-by-case basis based on the expected return on investment.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>Such testing ranges from using inexpensive off-the-shelf tools to exercise common interfaces to rather expensive custom testing and formal analysis.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>It is worthwhile to begin with off-the-shelf tools, such as those that target file parsers or web applications, and tools created as part of your greater secure development efforts.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>These can help identify easily-found flaws and suggest improvements to the coding standards.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>Comprehensive security testing, on the other hand, is best tackled after the Legacy Security Push.<o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt"><B style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal"><FONT size=3><FONT face=Calibri>The Legacy Security Push<o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></B></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt"><FONT size=3><FONT face=Calibri>Coding standards and basic testing provide bang for the buck, but formal security processes seek to provide security assurance.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>The challenge for legacy code is that it needs to play catch-up.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>Security processes that occur early in the development cycle, such as requirements analysis, design review, and threat modeling, are particularly difficult to achieve years after the fact.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>The main goal of the Legacy Security Push is to create the deliverables from these efforts, the most important of which are security requirements and a full risk analysis.<o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt"><FONT size=3><FONT face=Calibri>It may sound trivial, but security requirements are essential.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>Not only do they define proper operation for the system in question, they also define assumptions that are suitable for relying systems.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;&nbsp; </SPAN>It is very common to find security flaws in legacy systems that arise from well-intentioned but incorrect assumptions such as “I assume that the <I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">Foo</I> authenticates server <I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">Bar</I> when initiating a bank transfer.”<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>It stands to reason that <I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">Foo</I> would do so for such an important activity, but this assumption must be validated.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>It is very common for older features to have been deployed in and written for different environments where the security assumptions that are "obvious" today just didn't apply at the time.<o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt"><FONT size=3><FONT face=Calibri>When reviewing legacy systems, the first step is to identify such requirements.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>If the original architects, developers or managers are available, they can provide valuable insight at this stage.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>More often than not this is not the case, and analysis must instead rely on what documentation is present and interaction between the software and its consumers.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>The goal is the same as in requirements analysis during project inception, except that in this case one must turn the process on its head and reverse engineer requirements from system behavior.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>At the conclusion of this effort, requirements can be theorized – “<I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">Foo</I> must authenticate its server <I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">Bar</I> before initiating a bank transfer.”<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN><o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt"><FONT size=3><FONT face=Calibri>Risk analysis can be performed once a plausible set of requirements have been identified.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>Threat modeling is a more structured means of performing such an analysis, with the eventual goal of identifying means by which requirements can be violated by an attacker.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN><o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt"><FONT size=3><FONT face=Calibri>As with requirements analysis, original developers would be a valuable resource to consult.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>With or without such help, the first step is to identify how the software works.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>In many cases, help is not available and performing this task requires a great deal of effort.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>For features of moderate size, this author has spent upwards of a month reading code, using process profiling tools, and walking through the software with a debugger to identify program flow and security-sensitive functionality. <o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt"><FONT size=3><FONT face=Calibri>Once completed, actual system behavior should be documented and compared against the requirements theorized.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN><SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;</SPAN>It might be that the requirements should be re-evaluated (New requirement:<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>Do not assume that <I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">Foo</I> requires server authentication) or the system may need to be changed (New bug:<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;&nbsp; </SPAN><I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">Foo</I> does not verify the CN for <I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">Bar</I>).<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>At the end, this information should be sufficient to support a comprehensive threat modeling exercise where security requirements, risks, and their mitigations can be documented.<o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt"><B style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal"><FONT size=3><FONT face=Calibri>Next Steps<o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></B></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt"><FONT size=3><FONT face=Calibri>Bringing a legacy feature up to par with its newer kin requires a relatively small number of items:<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>improved code quality, clear security requirements, and a thorough threat model.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>As we have seen, performing even these tasks is quite the effort!<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>I am sure that it is little comfort to be reminded that accomplishing these tasks has simply laid the foundation, and that the true benefit is that the newly-reviewed legacy feature is able to participate fully in the security processes that remain: reviewing cross-component security requirements and assumptions, comprehensive testing, and incident planning, to name a few.<o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></P>

Moreover, would such a data mining approach made easily possible due to the availability of botnet parsing services and stolen accounting data dumps streaming directly from a botnet, would in fact be the more efficient approach in injecting their malicious presence on as many hosts as possible, next to the plain simple <a href="http://ddanchev.blogspot.com/2008/10/massive-sql-injection-attacks-chinese.html">massive SQL injection approach</a>?<br />

As always, it's a matter of who you're dealing with, and their understanding of the exclusiveness of a particular underground item at a given period of time. This exclusiveness is inevitably going to increase due to the fact that they're several "vendors" that are already purchasing access to such portfolios, as well as compromised Cpanel accounts as a core business, the access to which they would later on either resell at a higher price enjoying the underground market's lack of transparency, or directly monetize and break-even immediatelly. As for this particular proposition for an account with 404 domains in it, it's interesting to monitor how the seller is soliciting bids from multiple sources by leaving the price an open topic, clearly indicating his low profile into the underground ecosystem. How come? An experienced seller or buyer would be offering or requesting page rank verification respectively.<br />
<br />
With nearly each and every aspect of cybercrime already available as a service, or literally outsourced as a process to those supposidely excelling into a particular practice, building capabilities for data mining botnets is no longer a requirement, with the people behind the botnets monetizing all the data coming from it by soliciting deals of accounting data dumps based on a particular country only.<div class="feedflare">

      <title><![CDATA[Modelling The Global Financial Meltdown]]></title>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Yesterday I received a call from <a href="http://www.wallstreetandtech.com/penny-crosman/" target="_blank">Penny Grosman</a>, Senior Editor, <a href="http://www.wallstreetandtech.com/" target="_blank">Wall Street &amp; Technology</a>.   Penny was interested in my opinion, &#8220;Will risk management applications be the next killer app for CEP&#8221; on Wall Street.    I enjoyed talking with Penny.  She caught up with me leaving a tailor&#8217;s shop in Chiang Mai, so I hope she did not mind hearing my stories of buying unique Northern Thai cotton fabric and designing my own casual shirts in the economic turndown.</p>
<p>We read many stories on the net where folks claim that the current financial crisis could have been avoided with more or better use of technology.     This is expected, as software companies and IT professionals will often try to piggy-backtheir business development strategy on the &#8220;crisis of the day&#8221; to sell more goods and services.    Honestly, in this current situation, the main technology that we needed was simple, accurate financial models.</p>
<p>For example, in the chart above, the US economy was doing quite well with US federal funds rates low.   Housing prices in the US were skyrocketing and there was a concern about inflation.    There was an understandable concern the sustainability of that economy.</p>

<p>So, in perhaps one the most ill-advised Federal Reserve actions of many decades, the folks at the helm of the Fed decided to raise their lending rates around 500 percent over a two year period.</p>
<p>As we all know, primarily because of the action by the Fed, the world faces perhaps the worst economic disaster in modern times, while the US Executive Branch and the Congress fight over how to spend $700 Billion taxpayer dollars to inject liquidity into the markets to try to head off a global financial disaster.</p>
<p>It is amazing to me that the US Federal Government, or their advisors, does not have simple financial models with cause-and-effect analysis such as:</p>
<ul>
<li>Homeowners with adjustable rate mortuages will not be able to make payments;and</li>
<li>Housing prices will fall dramatically; then</li>
<li>Homeowners will default on loans where the collateral is much less than the asset value, and</li>
<li>Banks will suffer great losses, and</li>
<li>Lending will come to a halt, then</li>
<li>Banks will collapse, then</li>
<li>Wall Street will exit the markets in panic</li>
<li>&#8230; and more trouble&#8230;.. !!</li>
</ul>
<p>There are and continue to be a lot of discussion and opinions about how risk management needs improvement. and I agree.   We will also read folks talk about how technology can be used to help solve this problem, including CEP/EP and related software (see also <!-- This wrapper class appears only on Page and Single Post pages. --><a title="Capital Market CEP Fantasy Land" rel="bookmark" href="../2008/06/23/capital-market-cep-fantasy-land/">Capital Market CEP Fantasy Land</a>). However, as much I would be pleased to see more CEP/EP applications and use cases, I do not believe that event processing technology is really very useful to solve the core problem of the current financial crisis.</p>
<p>The core problem is, seemingly, that our &#8220;financial experts&#8221; do not even have simple models that will illustrate what will or could happen when you raise the fed lending rates 500 percent in two years in an economy pregnant with adjustable rate mortgages.</p>
<p>To me, this does not appear to be rocket science.  The negligence by the US Federal Reserve and their advisors is astonishing.</p>

      <title><![CDATA[CEP, Event Noise and Asymmetric Event Processing]]></title>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In <a title="The Genesis of Complex Event Processing: Asymmetric Capabilities" rel="bookmark" href="../2008/09/29/the-genesis-of-complex-event-processing-asymmetric-capabilites/">The Genesis of Complex Event Processing: Asymmetric Capabilities</a> I introduced the abstract concept of &#8220;asymmetric processing capabilities&#8221; to describe the foundations of complex event processing.   If you take a few moments to review the <a href="http://www.thecepblog.com/2008/07/07/a-blast-from-the-past-cep-at-stanford1998-2003/" target="_blank">first CEP projects</a> from <a href="http://www.stanford.edu" target="_blank">Stanford University</a>, you will see that the application of CEP was toward  solving myriad asymmetric event processing problems in distributed networks.    These applications included challenging problems such as:</p>
<ul>

</a></li>
<li><a href="http://pavg.stanford.edu/ID/">Cyber Security: Network Intrusion Detection,<br />
</a></li>
<li>Enterprise Monitoring and Management,</li>
<li><a href="http://pavg.stanford.edu/cep/final-version-131102.pdf">Modeling and Simulation of Collaborative Business Processes, </a></li>
<li>Business Policy Monitoring, and</li>
<li>Analysis and Debugging of Distributed Systems.</li>
</ul>
<p>In each of the CEP application examples above, the amount of event information available to software developers can be staggering; however, despite all the available information, the capability to sense-and-respond to threats and opportunities is crude, at best.</p>
<p>Folks who work in network and security management, for example, are bombarded with event information.  However, this deluge of event information is, for the most part, &#8220;noise&#8221; that is difficult to understand.   In network management one of the most difficult things to accomplish is to find the root cause of an outage or performance problem.   This is why researchers at Stanford were funded to focused on research topics such as (above), <em>the Analysis and Debugging of Distributed Systems</em>.</p>
<p>These are the classes of asymmetric event processing problems that define complex event processing, or CEP.   Processing events by mediating events, routing events, or running a rule-set against events and making a processing decision are all perfectly valid event processing applications.   However, the core reason to have &#8220;complex event processing&#8221; is to solve event processing problems where there exists a significant asymmetry between the deluge of &#8220;event noise&#8221;  (Professor Luckham called this phenomena the &#8220;event cloud&#8221;) and detecting business-relevant, actionable complex events in an climate of uncertainty and noise.</p>
<p>In my next post on this topic I will briefly the review motivation behind my 1999 ACM paper, <a title="Intrusion Detection Systems and Multisensor Data Fusion" rel="bookmark" href="../intrusion-detection-systems-and-multisensor-data-fusion/">Intrusion Detection Systems and Multisensor Data Fusion, </a> where we were working on solving complex distributed security challenges based on real-world experiences with the problems of asymmetric processing capabiilities.   I will discuss why we evolved from an early rule-based expert system model to a more advanced inference model that was not dependent solely on rule-based thinking.   I will also explain why other researchers and developers experienced in complex event detection applications have come to the same conclusion.</p>
