      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I’m out at <a href="http://clientconference.the451group.com/na/2008/" target="_blank">The 451 Group Client Conference</a> in Boston, lovely Boston. It’s been over ten years since I lived here, but somehow Boston always has a feel of home.</p>
<p>After meetings and calls, I was finally able to slip into a conference session – just in time to catch uber-smart analysts Rachel Chalmers (<a href="http://the451group.com/" target="_blank">The 451 Group</a>) and Dan Golding (<a href="http://tier1research.com/" target="_blank">Tier1 Research</a>) engage in a lively and not-so-mock debate on “<a href="http://clientconference.the451group.com/na/2008/agenda.html" target="_blank">Hosting Meets the Cloud</a>”.</p>
<p><a href="http://blog.sciencelogic.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/clip-image0021.jpg"><img style="border-top-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin: 5px; border-right-width: 0px" src="http://blog.sciencelogic.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/clip-image002-thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="clip_image002" width="240" height="157" align="left" /></a>Now this doesn’t cover the entire debate – and part II is coming tomorrow. But what it does cover is the most interesting questions (to me) and paraphrase the points made by the analysts. I thought they both had very interesting points and more similarities than differences in the end; the real difference is how they thought about the issues and through what lens – for Rachel it was the enterprise and for Dan it was managed hosting providers.<em> (</em><a href="http://images.inmagine.com/img/inspirestock/ispc037/ispc037046.jpg" target="_blank"><em>image from inmagine</em></a><em>)</em></p>
<p><strong><em>Question: What is a cloud and why?</em></strong></p>
<p><strong>Dan:</strong> Shared infrastructure leveraged/run by third parties for the benefit of enterprises, developers, etc. This is not a new idea – just recently “rebranded.” Given all the discussion and disagreement over this now, what will the cloud end up looking like?</p>
<p><strong>Rachel:</strong> The cloud is “IT infrastructure as a service” down to the level of a server operating system. Take the example of <a href="http://www.cmswatch.com/Trends/1418-Cloud-computing---Ellison-rants,-others-reap?source=RSS" target="_blank">Amazon web services</a> – in this case it’s not just the infrastructure but also the internal processes built around service delivery, e.g., provisioning, that are being exposed as a commodity to external customers.</p>
<p><strong><em>Dan’s Question for Rachel: In your opinion, how much is the <a href="http://computerworld.co.nz/news.nsf/devt/74F46C52ACB5316CCC2574F9007B3A37" target="_blank">cloud a fad versus CIOs</a> really trying to solve a problem?</em></strong></p>
<p><strong>Rachel:</strong> For the practical, roll-up-your-sleeves types of CIOs – those coming up from the engineering ranks – that I talk to, the cloud is real, as opposed to SOA and middleware.</p>
<p><strong><em>What about “internal” cloud computing – built and maintained by an enterprise versus a third-party provider?</em></strong></p>
<p><strong>Dan:</strong> Cloud computing is done by providers for customers. Certainly there are <a href="http://www.mashget.com/2008/11/02/salesforcecom-extends-cloud-computing-service/" target="_blank">enterprises that have made internal computing investments</a>, e.g., for publishing, large-scale phone systems, etc - but they were stupid ideas made by companies that have too much money. A better question here is does it make any sense for an enterprise to create their own cloud? While an enterprise can play at it, they can’t do it cost-effectively, not in a way that a third party provider can do it.</p>
<p><strong>Rachel:</strong> Many CIOs have “managed-hoster” envy – for things like chargeback and billing that hosters understand a do better. Of course there has been a rise in automation and virtualization tools in the enterprise which may not be as efficient and built for scalability as a hoster can achieve, but what is important is that they are customized/specialized for that business.</p>
<p><strong>Dan:</strong> Can you give a specific example of optimization to make it worthwhile for enterprises to do it themselves?</p>
<p><strong>Rachel:</strong> One example is sovereignty. The privacy laws around financial and healthcare information are not the same everywhere. Clouds and their geographically-dispersed data centers don’t necessarily have “national” borders. This is definitely a concern for the CIO that has to <a href="http://www.intomobile.com/2008/11/10/security-are-you-comfortable-sharing-your-information-with-%E2%80%98the-cloud%E2%80%99.html" target="_blank">comply with regulations in their industry around privacy protection</a>, for instance. Another example is security. Dow Chemical does a lot of work via joint ventures and has a need to provide but lock down desktops given to contractors as corporate workspaces. For their level of security, they need to “own” their computing resources.</p>
<p><strong>Dan:</strong> But why can’t someone like <a href="http://sungard.com/" target="_blank">SunGard</a> provide that as they do for many other large companies?</p>
<p><strong>Rachel:</strong> It comes down to a question of trust.</p>
<p><strong><em>Do people trust their hosting providers?</em></strong></p>
<p><strong>Dan</strong>: Yes. Whether it’s for a content delivery network or collocation, hosting the customers of hosting providers are some of the largest companies in the world in industries like energy and financial services. Give me a case when there was a major security issue with a hosting company. In fact, managed hosting providers usually provide better security than enterprises are capable of.</p>
<p><strong><em>And a question provided by an attendee from EMC: A few years ago, this would have been <a href="http://www.symmetrymagazine.org/breaking/2008/10/24/computing-in-a-grid-or-a-cloud/" target="_blank">a grid discussion. How is the cloud different</a>?</em></strong></p>
<p><strong>Rachel</strong>: Grid computing ended up being applicable only for niches – which I predicted. The real opportunity for everyone else with the cloud only comes up when you combine the kinds of automation tools (originally developed for grid computing) with x86 virtualization.</p>
<p><strong>Dan</strong>: I agree. Grid was a niche play. There were very few orgs that needed it and that the economics worked for. There were very few enterprises for whom it made sense to build their own for. The cloud is shared/leveraged versus grid computing. It economically makes sense in a way grid never did.</p>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[The third in the series where I am trying to think through the current approaches to securing virtual environments...<br /><br />See <a href="http://bitarmor.blogspot.com/2008/10/horses-ass-approach-to-virtualization.html">part one</a> and <a href="http://bitarmor.blogspot.com/2008/10/horses-ass-approach-to-virtualization_22.html">two here</a>...<br /><br />Virtualization enables organizations to optimally manage their infrastructure resources. It can provide significant cost benefits (by sharing resources), flexibility (by just-in-time allocation of resources where they are needed), and agility (speed of provisioning resources).  Therefore, organizations have been able to virtualize:<br /><ul><li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Devices/OS</span>: Companies such as VMWare, Citrix, Microsoft, and Sun are providing hypervisor, virtual machine, and virtual device solutions where several virtual “devices,” “servers,” or “desktops” can mimic separate physical devices.</li><li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Networks</span>: Virtualized networks enable dynamic collaboration by slicing bandwidth into virtual, isolated channels that can be assigned to a particular set of devices, real or virtual.  Setting up new connections and collaborative environments becomes extremely easy.</li><li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Applications</span>: Virtual applications can either be streamed down to execute on local desktops (Microsoft App-V or Altiris SVS) or executed remotely from server farms such as Citrix XenApp.  This allows applications to be portable and accessible from anywhere while reducing inter-application conflicts.</li></ul>However, organizations will never be able to virtualize the fourth element, I talked about in teh <a href="http://bitarmor.blogspot.com/2008/10/horses-ass-approach-to-virtualization_22.html">second blog</a> post — the data itself. The focus of device, network, and application virtualization is about flexibility, resource sharing, and agility. This involves short life spans, since these elements are brought up to fulfill a specific short term task, and upon completion, they are brought down or even deleted. Data, however, has a lifetime <span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">beyond </span>the short term and will therefore live on for further use or analysis in a non-virtual or subsequent virtual world.<br /><br />This makes data the “constant” in a dynamically changing environment — even if the location of data itself is virtualized. Data will also have the longest lifetime of the four elements in the infrastructure and thus will have to live “outside” of the virtual environment. Therefore, from a security standpoint, it is imperative that data becomes the focus of protection - and we dont just continue protecting the infrastructure.  Data is the critical asset, and since it travels across boundaries and lives longer than virtual elements, it can be easily compromised.<div class="feedflare">

That's of course in between the tiny time frame until he's exposed as the fake author of Zeus that may have in fact came up with a unique feature that the original authors didn't include.<br />

This <a href="http://ddanchev.blogspot.com/2008/04/crimeware-in-middle-zeus.html">modified version of Zeus</a> is yet another example of how <a href="http://ddanchev.blogspot.com/2007/09/localizing-open-source-malware.html">cybercriminals are actively modifying crimeware kits</a>, literally making such practices as keeping version numbers irrelevant. While the administrator is managing his botnet, he can load local, or tunein the built-in online radio stations the author of this modification included, next to changing Zeus entire graphical layout.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_wICHhTiQmrA/SOFXXUuuCcI/AAAAAAAACMo/amKui3kRUEU/s1600-h/pinchy_2008_modified_opensource.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_wICHhTiQmrA/SOFXXUuuCcI/AAAAAAAACMo/6el-_eHnyQs/s200-R/pinchy_2008_modified_opensource.jpg" /></a>Let's take into consideration another example, the infamous Pinch DIY malware builder, that's been around for over 4 years. With <a href="http://ddanchev.blogspot.com/2007/12/russias-fsb-vs-cybercrime.html">the populist arrest of its authors in 2007</a>, cybercriminals are still innovating on the foundations offered by Pinch, and <a href="http://ddanchev.blogspot.com/2008/08/pinch-vulnerable-to-remotely.html">thanks to its publicly obtainable source code</a>. It's also worth pointing out that these two Zeus and Pinch modifications are courtesy of a single individual, that in between modifications of popular crimeware kits, seems to be busy porting different modules on different malware kits and web based malware, knowingly or unknowingly contributing to the convergence of spamming, DDoS, web based malware, and botnet management kits.<br />
<br />
From a sarcastic perspective - what's next? Perhaps a built-in slideshow of random screenshots taken from malware infected desktops in the botnet, or even a pink layout modification for female botnet masters. Customerization, and <a href="http://ddanchev.blogspot.com/2008/07/coding-spyware-and-malware-for-hire.html">customer tailored services can make anything happen</a>, and naturally enjoy the higher profit margins.<div class="feedflare">

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I can&#8217;t keep track of how many different passwords I have, although I know it&#8217;s not nearly enough &#8212; I tend to be lazy like most people and re-use the same passwords for many different accounts.<br />
But here&#8217;s a new idea &#8212; what if passwords for online accounts were replaced entirely by cryptographic keys that sat on our desktops like icons, and functioned in the background, so we wouldn&#8217;t need to remember a string of letters or numbers?</p>
<p>An interesting <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.novainfosecportal.com/2008/08/14/bye-bye-passwords-maybe/">blog post </a>this morning discusses the obstacles and implications of this kind of technology, in part quoting a recent New York Times article &#8212; </p>
<blockquote><p>
In short, we need a log-on system that relies on cryptography, not mnemonics. As users, we would replace passwords with so-called information cards, icons on our screen that we select with a click to log on to a Web site. The click starts a handshake between machines that relies on hard-to-crack cryptographic code.</p></blockquote>
<p>An obstacle to this kind of system are the current initiatives toward Open ID and single-sign on services, strategies that are backed by large industry players such as the Equifax, Google, Novell, Microsoft, Oracle, etc. In the open ID system, you would log in to a session on the web with one password, which would be accepted by any application/account supporting the open ID infrastructure. </p>
<p>To me Open ID sounds like a step backwards, toward less security&#8230;<br />
then again, I would think that encrypting everything could also make your system run significantly slower, and that it wouldn&#8217;t prevent all the risks either&#8230;</p>]]></content:encoded>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>No, it is not the Dan K DNS presentation, sorry.  Patrick McGregor, CEO of BitArmor Systems is presenting at Black Hat as well.  As part of our promotion with the SBN and Black Hat I have made my blog available to Patrick to give us a sneak peek at his presentation.  Patrick was nice enough to prepare the following:</p>  <h4>Braving the Cold (Boot) – A Sneak Peek of My Presentation at Black Hat</h4>  <p>by Patrick McGregor</p>  <p>Cold boot attacks aren’t theoretical academic exercises. Cold boot attacks are real. And they’re serious.</p>  <p>In the past few years, companies have poured hundreds of millions of dollars into full disk encryption technologies. Companies expect full disk encryption to reduce the risk of exposure of sensitive information such as intellectual property or customer data. Reality often deviates from what is expected, however. Researchers from Princeton shocked the industry earlier in 2008 when they released a <a href="http://citp.princeton.edu/memory/">research paper</a> that showed that low-cost “Cold Boot” attacks could be used to defeat the security of most full disk encryption systems. They <a href="http://bitarmor.blogspot.com/2008/07/for-your-hacking-pleasure-cold-boot.html">recently even published</a> all the tools needed to do this at home!</p>  <p>Some have argued that Cold Boot attacks are not serious security threats. I disagree! First, an unskilled person can capitalize on the exploit using <a href="http://securosis.com/2008/03/27/uh-oh-time-to-take-cold-boot-encryption-attacks-very-seriously/">simple, automated steps</a> and <a href="http://mcgrewsecurity.com/projects/msramdmp/">publicly available tools</a>. In fact, Cold Boot attacks require nothing more than plugging a USB drive into a laptop. Second, the physical target of a Cold Boot attack, such as a laptop, is very easily obtainable (see the <a href="http://www.networkworld.com/news/2008/063008-laptops-lost-like-hot-cakes.html">recent Ponemon report</a> on laptops lost/stolen in airports – scary!). Third, although many laptops and desktops are stolen via random acts of theft, it is well known that some criminals profit from organized, calculated data theft. It is only a matter of time before we hear of a high-profile data breach that results from a simple Cold Boot attack.</p>  <p>I am excited to <a href="http://www.blackhat.com/html/bh-usa-08/bh-usa-08-speakers.html#McGregor">present at Black Hat</a> several innovations for preventing Cold Boot attacks. In addition to summarizing how a Cold Boot attack works, I’ll describe four new software techniques for hardening full disk encryption against the attacks. The software technology was developed by myself, Tim Hollebeek, Alexander Volynkin, and Matt White. All of us work for <a href="http://www.bitarmor.com/">BitArmor,</a> an exciting security startup based in Pittsburgh. Here’s a sneak peek:</p>  <p>· <b>Wash up</b>: Wipe keys immediately before certain OS state transitions, such as before the computer shuts down or goes into hibernation mode – accessing the memory will yield nothing. </p>  <p>· <b>Take advantage of BIOS memory smashing</b>: By strategically placing keys in certain regions of memory, we can rely on the BIOS boot process to overwrite keys before any operating system can dump the contents of memory.</p>  <p>· <b>Is it chilly in here?</b>: Using built-in temperature sensors, we can lock down the system in reaction to temperature drops that may indicate a Cold Boot attack is in progress.</p>  <p>· <b>Create a virtual enclave for keys</b>: We can implement special cryptographic, OS and processor architecture techniques to provide robust protection for keys against the most aggressive cold boot attacks.
