I often get asked that if the current self-decribed CEP vendors are not doing “real CEP,” in my opinon, who are the vendors in the CEP space?

At the moment, event correlation and event analysis is Gartner’s closest magic quadrant (MQ) that relates directly to complex event processing (and event processing in general).

A number of our friends and colleagues would like to position CEP as BRE, BRMS, BPM, SOA, algo trading and just about every other technology under the sun, except event correlation!

In a nutshell, the state-of-the-state of CEP/EP is that a number of firms in the software industry have found some “uncharted magic quadrant waters” and are positioning themselves to be “chart worthy”. Instead of competing head on with the experienced players (event correlation and analysis) that have been in the event processing field for many years.

As I have mentioned a few times here on The CEP Blog, if the current generation self-described CEP engines were leading the industry in event correlation and analysis (CEP’s core technology domain) they would be either be on Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for IT Event Correlation and Analysis, or possibly acquired by a one of these large giants in event processing to solve complex event processing and event correlation problems that remain, for the most part, still unsolved!

What are some its key differentiation factors? Multitasking at its best, for instance, the kits provides the botnet master with the opportunity to manage numerous different task such as several malware campaigns and DDoS attacks simultaneously, where each of these gets a separate metrics page.

Automation of malicious tasks, by setting up tasks, and issuing notices on the status of the task, when it was run and when it was ended. Just consider the possibilities for a scheduling malware and DDoS attacks for different quarters.

Segmentation in every aspect of the tasks, for instance, a DDoS attacks against a particular site can be scheduled to launched on a specific date from infected hosts based in chosen countries only.

Customized DDoS in the sense of empowering the botnet master with point'n'click ability to dedicate a precise number of the bots to participate, which countries they should be based in, and for how long the attack should remain active. Quality and assurance in DDoS attacks based on the measurement of the bot's bandwidth against a particular country, in this case the object of the attack, so theoretically bots from neighboring countries would DDoS the country in question far more efficiently.

Historical malware campaign performance, is perhaps the most quality assurance feature in the entire kit, presumably created in order to allow the person behind it to measure which were the most effective malware and DDoS campaigns that he executed in the past. From an OSINT perspective, sacrificing his operational security by maintaing detailed logs from previous attacks is a gold mine directly establishing his relationships with previous malware campaigns.

Two way data binding in ASP.NET is easy, just use the Bind expression and data will flow between your web controls and your data source flawlessly. Until that is, you try to use a format string:

Bind("AmountCharged", "{0:C}")

While this displays just as you'd expect (e.g., $200), it doesn't do so well when you submit an edit that includes the same value ($200):

Input string was not in a correct format.

I searched around and didn't find much in the way of a clean solution, but I did solve the problem with just a few lines of code. The trick is to handle the data-bound control's Updating event. Since I was working with a GridView, my solution looked a bit like this:

<asp:GridView DataSourceID='myDataSource'

              CellPadding="3" ...>

Notice the OnRowUpdating handler that I've installed in my grid view. That code looks like this:

protected void FixFormatting(object sender, GridViewUpdateEventArgs args)
{
    decimal amountPaid = ParseDecimal((string)args.NewValues["AmountPaid"]);
    args.NewValues["AmountPaid"] = amountPaid;
}

When you handle this event, you're given a dictionary of old and new values, which appear to come directly from the controls (in my case, a TextBox was used to gather the updated data AmountPaid, so the type of object that I found in NewValues["AmountPaid"] was a string. I wrote a little helper method called ParseDecimal that parses a string into a decimal value, allowing currency characters, decimal points, and thousands separators. I also allowed a blank value to indicate zero:

public static decimal ParseDecimal(string value)
{
    if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(value))
        return 0;
    return Decimal.Parse(value,
        NumberStyles.AllowThousands |
        NumberStyles.AllowDecimalPoint |
        NumberStyles.AllowCurrencySymbol,
        CultureInfo.InstalledUICulture);
}

This solved the problem quite nicely. Now two-way binding works with formatted data.

Today I was thinking about DLP again :-) (yes, I know that "content monitoring and protection" - CMF - is a better description) Specifically, I was thinking about DLP and compliance. At first, it was truly amazing to me that DLP vendors "under-utilize" compliance in their messaging. In other words, they don't push the "C-word" as strongly as many other security companies. Compliance dog doesn't snarl at you from their front pages and it doesn't bite you in you ass when you read the whitepapers, etc. Sure, it is mentioned there, but, seemingly, as an after-thought.

For example, Reconnex that was recently absorbed by McAfee, touts "information protection" before compliance. Similarly, my friends from nexTier only mention "compliance" on a few pages. Even newly unveiled DLP resource (DLP In-Depth portal) only contains a little bit of information on how DLP solutions help with various compliance projects. People tout "data protection", " data security", "data governance" (aka "we know big words - bigger than you") or even "data risk management" (aka "we are confused about what we sell")

I decide to explore this curious phenomenon.

Initially, I thought that it was reverse compliance at work? People not wanting to know what content packs up and leaves their network. Then I thought that maybe DLP vendors just aren't "the bandwagon jumping kind" (yeah, right!) Then I thought that they are "beyond compliance" already :-)

But you know what? I actually think that it is something different, much more sinister. It is the ominous checklist mentality (here too)! You know, DLP is newer than most regulations (PCI DSS, HIPAA, FISMA, etc) and - what a shock! - the documentation for these mandates just doesn't mention DLP (or CMF) by name. Sure, they talk about data protection (e.g. PCI DSS Requirements 3 and 4), but mostly in terms of encryption, access control, logging (of course!).

Also, PCI DSS directly and explicitly says "get a firewall", "deploy log management", "get scanned", "install and update AV" - but where is DLP? Ain't there...

Yes, Virginia, folks who "go by the book" and just "do the minimum" are missing out on the chance to procure DLP while their compliance budgets are still flowing. To me that means that many still don't get the "compliance+" model - buy for compliance -> use for security, operations, having fun, etc. Think what a good DLP solution will do for you in discovering regulated data across the entire organization, blocking those pesky email with SSNs, PHI (hi, HIPAA) and CCs (hi, PCI) as well as solving plenty of other problems ...

About me: http://www.chuvakin.org

Likely you remember when Joseph Pierini at McAfee Secure / Hacker Safe said XSS wasn't important because "cross-site scripting can't be used to hack a server. You may be able to do other things with it. You may be able to do things that affect the end-user or the client. But the customer data protected with the server, in the database, isn't going to be compromised by a cross-site scripting attack, not directly."
That gem has made McAfee Pwnie worthy (winners announced tomorrow!); may the Lamest Vendor win.
That said, anyone with a clue knows that XSS attacks are ideal for credential theft, and if you can steal credentials, you can hack a server.
Looking for a textbook example? Check out mckt's new blog, skeptikal.org.
Here's a highlight:
"Every cPanel user's account contains a file titled .contactemail in its home directory. This is used to tell the server and administrators who to email when things go south, and can be changed by the user through the cPanel interface, the file manager tool, FTP, or through local scripts. It's only a text file, after all. Assuming we set our email address to:
"onmouseover="alert(1337)
When the friendly system administrator tries to reset our email address (because we forgot our password, obviously), he will receive an alert box in his browser.
But an alert box doesn't really demonstrate anything. Fortunately the WHM (Web Hosting Manager) interface has enough functionality that we can perform just about any system-level task we want. This one will reset the root password to 'owned':
"onmouseover="f=document.forms[0];f.action='/scripts/passwd';f.user.value='root';
f.removeChild(f.domain);d=document.createElement('input');f.appendChild(d);
d.name='password';d.value='owned';d=document.createElement('input');f.appendChild(d);
d.name='password2';d.value='owned';f.submit()
Of course, the only limit is your imagination- WHM can set up cron jobs, add and delete users, send full backups to a server of your choice, and reformat hard drives."

Hmm...I'd say that would be a server hack. ;-)
Welcome, Mike...keep up the good work.

del.icio.us | digg

In fact, malicious attackers have been building so much confidence in this risk-forwarding process of hosting their campaigns, that they would start actively spamming the links residing within low-profile legitimate sites across the web.

This campaign serving fake flash players is getting so prevalent these days due to the multiple spamming approaches used, that it's hard not to notice it - and expose it. From a strategic perspective, having a legitimate low-profile site -- of course with the obvious exceptions being on purposely registered for malicious purposes within the participating sites -- hosting your malicious campaign is pretty creative in terms of forwarding the responsibility, and the eventual blocking of a legitimate site to the its owner. As far as the owner's are concerned, it appears that some of them are already seeing the malware page popping-up on the top of their daily traffic stats, and have taken measures to remove it.

Moreover, Adobe's Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT) issued a warning notice about the attack yesterday, which could come handy if the attackers weren't taking advantage of client-side vulnerabilities, putting the unware end user is a situation where he wouldn't even receive a download dialog :

"We have seen coverage from the security community of a worm on popular social networking sites that is using social engineering lures to get users to install a piece of malware. According to the reports, the worm posts comments on these sites that include links to a fake site. If the link is followed, users are told they need to update their Flash Player. The installer, posted on a malicious site, of course installs malware instead of Flash Player.We’d like to take this opportunity to reiterate the importance of validating installers and updates before installing them. First off, do not download Flash Player from a site other than adobe.com – you can find the link for downloading Flash Player here. This goes for any piece of software (Reader, Windows Media Player, Quicktime, etc.) – if you get a notice to update, it’s not a bad idea to go directly to the site of the software vendor and download the update directly from the source. If the download is from an unfamiliar URL or an IP address, you should be suspicious."

The structure of the malware campaign is pretty static, with several exceptions where they also take advange of client-side vulnerabilities (Real player exploit) attempting to automatically deliver the fake flash update or player depending on the campaign. On each and every site, there are dnd.js and master.js scripts shich serve the rogue download window, and another .html file, where an IFRAME attempts to access the traffic management command and control, in a random URL it was 207.10.234.217/cgi-bin/index.cgi?user200.

HRWorld has a recent article on how to handle Lame Duck employees — those who have turned in their resignation letters. In IT this is particularly critical since many admins have access to critical information about the company. Sometimes it makes sense to escort them directly off premises, instead of keeping them around…

But it is sometimes desirable to transition the employee out of the organization as quickly as possible. For example, you would not want a lame-duck network engineer to continue to have access to critical IT infrastructure. In such cases, it is appropriate to relieve the employee of keys, computer access and other company property and to escort him or her off the premises immediately.

Of course, it’s good to plan ahead for this event — make sure all critical admins are documenting their jobs, and keeping documentation for their network as they go. It would be highly annoying, and probably embarrassing, to escort your newly resigned network admin off premises, only to realize he was the only guy who knew how to access your important file systems.

Too bad there is no Kaplan Test Prep equivalent for FISMA.

For the third year in a row, the government’s overall FISMA grade improved. But don’t get too excited; the grade only improved from a C- to a C this year. (And D+ in 2005).

But there’s a lot to hide in an “average grade”. Turns out that the reality is a split between overachievers and underachievers.

The agencies/departments with a grade of A-, A or A+:

Department of Justice

US AID

EPA

NSF

SSA

HUD

OPM (I would hope so)

And, sadly the ones that got an F:

Department of the Interior

Department of Treasury

Nuclear Regulatory Commission

Department of Veterans Affairs

Department of Agriculture

FISMA (Federal Information Security Management Act) became a federal law back in 2002 as part of the E-Government Act. Six years later, there has been improvement, but there’s still clearly a long way to go.

So what’s the disconnect? Speaking from a vendor perspective, we’ve had first-hand experience with the lack of actionable, concrete guidelines around FISMA – for processes, monitoring and check-list assessment items. We even contacted NIST directly to get more guidance on how their very broad guidelines should be translated to actual features and reporting in something like our monitoring solution. The end goal, after all, is to help our government customers not only meet the FISMA requirements but also to be seen/assessed as meeting those requirements. As we do for other compliance/governance requirements like Sarbanes-Oxley, the more that EM7 can automate and report on, the better.

But that leads to the second issue here. How accurate is the FISMA scorecard? SC Magazine writes, “Many have seen organizations get an A when they believe they should have received an F, and vice versa” and some experts “blame this on the lack of a standardized evaluation, as well as censorship among auditors.” There’s talk about language ambiguities and opinions that the scorecard is not “one size fits all” – that small agencies face different IT security challenges than the big guys.

So what’s right about FISMA? We can point to a heightened awareness about the importance of security and the “security picture” in each federal agency. Certainly, from our own survey at FOSE, we saw the difference just from last year to this one:

91% surveyed said FISMA was important (up from 66% last year)

Over 50% had solutions installed to help with FISMA (up from only 14% last year)

Based on these numbers, we’re not surprised to see the FISMA average grade go up, but we expected it to be even higher. So what will it take to get the government on the honor roll? From Rep. Tom Davis, “We need to seriously consider incentives for agency success and funding penalties and personnel reforms for agencies that don’t measure up…We need a bill with teeth, and we need agencies to understand the goal is to keep information safe, not to check a statutory box.”

        I woke this morning to find an interesting set of blog entries regarding the Wall-E demo game from THQ - someone downloaded the demo and found their AV scanner flagging it as potentially dangerous.

A quick roundup of posts:

1) Security researcher Timeless Prototype downloads the Wall-E demo, only to find his antivirus software going crazy. It has detected Spyware.Ardakey.

2) Over at Spyware Sucks, Sandi Hardmeier decides to try downloading versions of the game from different regions, only to find the French, German ,Danish and Italian versions are all 177MB in size, whereas the US version is "only" 133MB. Furthermore, the 177MB versions all have different filenames. Note that (so far) it's the UK version (clocking in at 177MB) that has been snagged by an antivirus program. As Sandi notes, there is no way an extra 40-odd MB are needed for a keylogger, so why the extra filesize?

3) Wayne Porter contacted Cachefly (who manage the servers the game is downloading from), and they said this:

"I can confirm that our servers were not compromised, beyond that I can't offer much else.

Obviously we'd like to be as helpful as possible, but since it's related to customer data we're rather limited in what we can discuss. I've opened a ticket to make THQ aware of this, and we can/will work them on tracking stuff down if we need to (we do have a history of all versions of a file w/ filesizes/md5 checksums, and the dates/times/src ip of all revisions)."

The 177MB file is still available to download, I grabbed it a little earlier on today:

What we really need to know, is if this is anything to be worried about or not. I would have contacted THQ UK directly, but they don't seem to be available on a Sunday. Until this is resolved one way or another, I'd have to advise people not to download this demo as a precaution until THQ (or Norton, whose AV program flagged the file) have clarified exactly what is going on here. We're currently running some more antivirus / antispyware scans against the download in question, but as you can imagine, this takes some time. A particular problem here is that there are issues submitting a file like this to sites such as Virustotal.com, because of their 10MB file size limit.

Sorting this one out might take a while...

/ Update - some people are saying AVAST flags the file, too.
