      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Information Security budgets are pretty <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cruft">crufty</a>, they are an accumulation of decisions but the analysis that led to these decisions is rarely revisited, it just snowballs. So the normal Information Security budget is just a legacy artifact of when the network was the greatest vulnerability. <a href="http://www.cigital.com/~gem/">Gary McGraw&#160;</a><a href="http://www.informit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=1237978">took a pass</a> at reviewing the numbers in software security, breaking down software security sectors like tools and services (note to Gary - I think <a href="http://www.aspectsecurity.com/">Aspect</a> does more than just training!). This is great work by Gary to get these numbers to see the real changes occuring in software security. Here were his findings on software security tools:</p><div><blockquote class="webkit-indent-blockquote" style="margin: 0 0 0 40px; border: none; padding: 0px;"><p><span style="font-family: &#39;Lucida Grande&#39;; line-height: 19px; ">One of the most important developments in the software security market can be seen in the tools space which, combined, almost doubled to $150-180 million. Top of list are two major acquisitions that closed in 2007: Watchfire&#39;s purchase by IBM (somewhere in the range of $120-150 million on 2006 revenue of $26 million) and SPI Dynamics&#39;s purchase by HP (for around $100 million on 2006 revenue of $21.2 million).</span></p></blockquote><blockquote class="webkit-indent-blockquote" style="margin: 0 0 0 40px; border: none; padding: 0px;"><p><span style="font-family: &#39;Lucida Grande&#39;; line-height: 19px;">...</span></p></blockquote><blockquote class="webkit-indent-blockquote" style="margin: 0 0 0 40px; border: none; padding: 0px;"><p><span style="font-family: &#39;Lucida Grande&#39;; line-height: 19px; ">The black box space was flat in 2007, with IBM/Watchfire checking in at $24.1 million and HP/SPI Dynamics earning $22.3 million. Smaller companies in the space, including Cenzic, Codenomicon, WhiteHat and the like had combined revenues around $12.5 million (a growth of 25%, though Cenzic grew 16% and WhiteHat 52%). Most of the growth &quot;hiccup&quot; in the black box market can be attributed to the serious challenges posed by any acquisition. So far 2008 looks to be back on track from a growth perspective in the black box testing space. The global reach that IBM and HP offer are already making a big difference.</span></p></blockquote><blockquote class="webkit-indent-blockquote" style="margin: 0 0 0 40px; border: none; padding: 0px;"><p><span style="font-family: &#39;Lucida Grande&#39;; line-height: 19px;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: &#39;Lucida Grande&#39;; line-height: 19px; ">On a more positive note, static analysis tools for code review grew at a healthy clip in 2007 into a $91.9 million dollar market. Fortify was up 83% to $29.2 million. Klocwork grew over 60% to $26 million. Coverity grew over 50% to $27.2 million. Ounce Labs tripled their revenue to $9.5 million.</span></p></blockquote><blockquote class="webkit-indent-blockquote" style="margin: 0 0 0 40px; border: none; padding: 0px;"><br /></blockquote><div><br /><div>These are very nice growth numbers, what company doesn&#39;t want 83% growth? However, the total picture is not so good. Gary&#39;s estimate shows the software security space coming in at $150 Million total, yet we see a company like Checkpoint that won the network security war in 1995 with earnings of around $900 Million! One single network security vendor is 6 times bigger than the entire software security space?!? Complete UTTER Madness!</div><br /><div>This is the stupefying, stultifying effects of budget cruft, where the decisions made in <a href="http://1raindrop.typepad.com/1_raindrop/2007/10/network-securit.html">The People&#39;s Republic of Information Security</a> have no bearing on reality of threats or even a business case.</div><br /><div>Let&#39;s look at networks. Obviously Cisco is the biggest, they earned $39.5 Billion last year. Pretty stellar. So spending $900 Million (Checkpoint) to defined $39.5 Billion seems like a pretty good deal.</div><br /><div>Except, let&#39;s compare software security spending - last year Microsoft earned $60 Billion, SAP $16 billion, and Oracle $22 Billion. So that is about $98 Billion and you are going to &quot;defend&quot; that with allocating $150 Million worth of software security tools?</div><br />

<br /><div>This table greatly disturbs me. From a prioritization standpoint The People&#39;s Republic of Information Security is misaligned by orders of magnitude. Next time you read about a data breach, or see an auditor&#39;s report with thousands of findings you won&#39;t have to wonder how it happened. It happened because Information Security doesn&#39;t have its eye on the ball.</div><br /><div>Consider that software security tools could grow 50% a year for five years and still be half of where Checkpoint is today!</div><br />I see the outcomes of backwards looking, crufty decisions by Information Security every day - one or two software security sherpas heading out to work with thousands of developers, meanwhile the network security people sit around and read the newspaper and go home every day at 5.</div><br /><div>The optimistic way of looking at all this data is that there is major room for growth for software security, if you take Checkpoint as a target, then the software security space should evolve to around 2% of the software space meaning that it should evolve into a $2 billion space <span style="font-style: italic;">around fifteen times larger</span> than it is today. Unprotected assets will either be protected or will cease to be assets, VCs get your check books ready.</div>]]></content:encoded>

In this underground proposition for a proprietary banker malware targeting primarily Brazillian bank, the author is relying on the localized value added to his malware forgetting a simply fact - that the most popular banker malware is generalizing E-banking transactions in such a way that it's successfully able to hijack the sessions of banks it hasn't originally be coded to target in general.<br />

Adding an additional module for stealtness increases the prices, as well as an additional module forwarding the process of updating the malware binary to the "customer support desk". Moreover, stripping the banker kit from modules in which the customer doesn't have interest, like for instance exclude all Asian banks the kit has already built-in capabilities to hijack and log transactions from, decreases its price.<br />

Controversial to the concept of outsourcing, some cybercriminals are in fact so self-sufficient, that the stereotype of a mysterious 76service server offered for rent could in fact easily cease to exist in an ecosystem so vibrant that literally everyone can partion their botnet and start offering access to it on a multi-user basis. Evil? Obviously. Extending the lifecycle of a proprietary malware tool? Definitely.<br />

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lw9IeuKkNbc">The infamous 76service</a>, a cybercrime as a service web interface where customers basically collect the final output out of the banking malware botnet during the specific period of time for which they've purchases access to the service, is going mainstream, with 76Service's Spring Edition apparently leaking out, and cybercriminals enjoying its interoperability potential by introducing different banking trojans in their campaigns. <br />

In this post, I'll discuss the 76service's spring.edition that has been combined with a <a href="http://ddanchev.blogspot.com/2007/11/metaphisher-malware-kit-spotted-in-wild.html">Metaphisher banking malware</a>, an a popular <a href="http://ddanchev.blogspot.com/2008/04/crimeware-in-middle-zeus.html">web malware exploitation kit</a>, with two campaigns currently hosting 5.51GB of stolen banking data based on over 1 million compromised hosts 59% of which are based in Russia. A project was like an investment portfolio. <p>In this interview, cloudsecurity.org talks to <a title="Homepage of Guido van Rossum" href="http://www.python.org/~guido/">Guido van Rossum</a> about <a title="Python website" href="http://python.org">Python</a>, <a title="Description of Google AppEngine" href="http://code.google.com/appengine/docs/whatisgoogleappengine.html">Google App Engine</a> and security.</p>
<p>Guido is the creator of the Python programming language and more recently, Google App Engine team member.  His involvement with the App Engine project was pretty late - the code &#8220;was almost ready for release&#8221; when he get involved.  The security architect of App Engine was primarily project lead, <a title="Kevin Gibbs Campfire Transcript" href="http://code.google.com/appengine/articles/cf1-text.html">Kevin Gibbs</a>, supported by the rest of the App Engine crew and the Google Security Team.</p>
<h4>The Interview</h4>
<p><em>cloudsecurity.org: What security principles did you follow for App Engine?<br />
</em></p>
<p>GvR: While I can&#8217;t share any specifics on what we&#8217;re doing to secure App Engine, I can say that the main principle we&#8217;ve followed could be called &#8220;defense in depth&#8221;. We&#8217;re not relying exclusively on a secure interpreter, or any other single security layer, to protect our users.</p>
<p><em>cloudsecurity.org: Please provide some examples of how those principles played out in terms of the current implementation?<br />
</em> <em> </em></p>
<p>GvR: Sorry, we don&#8217;t divulge such information.</p>
<p><em>cloudsecurity.org: What criteria did you apply to Python module selection?</em></p>
<p>GvR: We first looked for modules that were useful and straightforward to audit. If a module was large or complex, we&#8217;d only audit it (fixing things we found) if it was deemed essential or at least useful for a large number of users; otherwise we&#8217;d exclude it.</p>
<p><em>cloudsecurity.org: What do you see as the security risks inherent in exposing an interpreter runtime in a shared environment?<br />
</em></p>
<p>GvR: <span>I presume you&#8217;re asking about risks to users, like providing accidental access to data belonging to another app. We&#8217;ve taken extensive measures to isolate different apps from each other. For example, each app runs in a separate process, and the datastore prevents an app from accessing data belonging to other apps.</span></p>
<p><em>cloudsecurity.org: I recently attended a fascinating talk by <a title="Justin Ferguson" href="http://eusecwest.com/justin-ferguson-interpreter-vm-attacks.html" target="_blank">Justin Ferguson</a> (a Seattle based security consultant) at <a title="eusecwest" href="http://www.eusecwest.com/" target="_blank">eusecwest</a> in London.  He gave a great talk exploring security vulnerabilities in language interpreters and specifically highlighted some security weaknesses in Python App Engine.  What are your thoughts on his research and specifically the Python issues he highlighted?  When do you anticipate they will get fixed?<br />
</em></p>
<p>GvR: We&#8217;ve anticipated all of the possibilities raised in Justin&#8217;s talk, and took measures to protect our users. Justin highlighted weaknesses in Python, but not in App Engine. Furthermore, our security model does not rely solely upon protections within the Python interpreter; there are additional protections that these external analyses have missed.<em><br />
</em><br />
<em>cloudsecurity.org: How do you contain an attacker that exploits bugs in App Engine from exploiting the underlying OS and potentially interfering with other users processes or attacking backend systems?<br />
</em></p>
<p>GvR: You are correct that there are strong measures in place, but I&#8217;m not at liberty to discuss details.</p>
<p><em>cloudsecurity.org: Python was the first language to get the App Engine treatment, what language is next and what are some of the language specific security challenges the team has had to deal with?<br />
</em></p>
<p>GvR: Although I can&#8217;t comment on what language is next, we are working on this, and have gotten a lot of great feedback from our developers. As far as language-specific security challenges, they stemmed mostly from the complexity of the Python interpreter. We spent a lot of time auditing this, and did a great deal more than just identifying buffer overflows.  I can also add that Google is actively researching the security of interpreted languages.  Google engineers routinely contribute security fixes to open source projects, including but not limited to Python.<em><br />
</em><br />
<em>cloudsecurity.org: How does the team decide when &#8216;enough is enough&#8217; in terms of hardening the interpreter?<br />
</em> <em> </em></p>
<p>GvR: That&#8217;s not really how we approach it. We realize that security is an ongoing effort, and try to stay ahead of threats through continuous monitoring and testing.</p>
<p><em>cloudsecurity.org: Some <a style="color: #551a8b;" title="commentators" href="http://blog.ianbicking.org/2008/04/13/app-engine-and-pylons/" target="_blank">commentators</a> have suggested that perhaps the difficulty of auditing the implementation led to some modules being more heavily restricted than perhaps necessary.  What are your thoughts on that and what plans, if any, are there to bring back code objects/functions that were eliminated in the initial release?  (with the benefit of hindsight).<br />
</em> <em> </em></p>
<p>GvR: The only thing we are likely to put back is the _ast module, which was not audited based upon an underestimation of its usefulness (see my answer to question #3 above).  We will also put back some dummy functions and other objects whose absence currently prevents some popular frameworks from being loaded without modifications. For example, some harmless functionality in the imp module will come back. We&#8217;re also looking into making urllib2 work (to some extent), though that&#8217;s not really a security issue but merely a matter of API adjustment.</p>
<p><em>cloudsecurity.org: It is reported that Google encourages small groups to go off and create.  How involved were the Google security team with App Engine in terms of design and implementation review/testing?  Given the dynamics, is it possible to have a meaningful security process that shadows the development process?<br />
</em> <em> </em></p>
<p>GvR: The Google Security team is involved in everything we do. They have been extremely helpful.</p>
<p><em>cloudsecurity.org: How can people report security weaknesses they discover in App Engine?  What commitment does Google give in terms of dealing vulnerability reports?<br />
</em> <em> </em></p>
<p>GvR: There is a standard process for submitting security issues. See <a title="http://www.google.com/corporate/security.html" href="http://www.google.com/corporate/security.html" target="_blank">http://www.google.com/corporate/security.html</a>. Google moves very fast to protect its users when a verifiable security vulnerability is reported.<span><em><br />
</em></span><br />
<em>cloudsecurity.org: One concern is the potential misuse of App Engine to exploit security vulnerabilities in visitors browsers.  This is not a new problem per se, shared hosting providers know all about this.  But with Google and other Cloud providers, the scalability potential is much higher.  What are your thoughts on this and what pro-active steps is Google taking to detect and terminate evil apps?<br />
</em> <em> </em></p>
<p>GvR: This is high on our list of concerns. We deal with this through a combination of restrictions on what you can do (e.g. certain HTTP headers and ports are off-limits) and, again, monitoring.</p>
<p><em>cloudsecurity.org: Beyond App Engine, what role do you think Python will play in the Cloud both now and in the future?<br />
</em> <em> </em></p>
<p>GvR: Sorry, I&#8217;m not prone to philosophizing about the future.</p>
<p><em>cloudsecurity.org: Trust is often cited as a barrier to enterprise adoption of Cloud Computing.  What role do you personally think Google can play in building that trust?<br />
</em> <em> </em></p>
<p>GvR: I think trust is built up over a long period of experience. Our actions in terms of being open to our users will be the most important factor in establishing trust. Of course, Google&#8217;s reputation also helps: everybody understands that Google doesn&#8217;t want its name associated with a bad product.</p>
<p><em>cloudsecurity.org: Looking at the Cloud Computing landscape beyond Google, what are your thoughts on the current state of Cloud Computing and Security?<br />
</em></p>
<p>GvR: It&#8217;s obvious that Cloud Computing is only just taking off. The next few years will be very exciting.</p>
<p><em>cloudsecurity.org: Lastly, what are some of your favourite App Engine apps?<br />
</em></p>
<p>GvR: There are too many to enumerate. If you insist on a highlight, well, I like Rietveld (<a title="http://codereview.appspot.com" href="http://codereview.appspot.com/" target="_blank">http://codereview.appspot.com</a>), a tool for collaborative code review which I (largely) wrote myself. It is open source and includes some essential components from Mondrian, a similar internal tool which I created before I joined the App Engine team.</p>

      <title><![CDATA[It Changed My Life: My Review of "Geekonomics"]]></title>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As I am sitting here - <em>yes, you guessed right!</em> - on a plane, I cannot stop thinking about <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Geekonomics-Real-Cost-Insecure-Software/dp/0321477898">the book "Geekonomics"</a>(<a href="http://geekonomicsbook.com/">book site</a>)&nbsp; which I just finished reading (earlier impressions <u><a href="http://chuvakin.blogspot.com/2008/05/paranoia-acting-up-or-just-being.html">here</a></u> and <u><a href="http://chuvakin.blogspot.com/2008/04/on-geekonomics.html">here</a></u>). The way it ends, BTW, just kicks you in the balls, hard (look up what Mr Petrov did on Sept 26, 1983 and why, if you are already curious)!</p> <p>Call me easily impressible, call me naive, darn, call me "out of touch with current security issues," but this book struck a major, major chord with me. It really did.</p> <p>Now, I have experienced as much poor quality and insecure software as the next guy. I am never ever surprised about some feature in MS Office (or other application, really) just flat out not working or not working as expected or not working every time.</p> <p>I suspect that, by now, every human on Earth who ever laid their hands on a computer knows:</p> <p><strong>software = might NOT work.</strong></p> <p>Now, we expect roads, bridges, toasters, chainsaws, bicycles, cars (until they put software in them...) to work and work they do. And if they don't - the company who manufactures them usually makes them work for us fast - or goes away, cut down by the "benevolent" axe of capitalism. Now, software is <strong>totally</strong> different (<a href="http://chuvakin.blogspot.com/2007/05/are-you-mad-are-we-all.html">my thinking</a> about this one).</p> <p>And <strong>everybody</strong> knows it. But nobody was brave enough to take a hard look at this and analyze how that simple fact affected, affects and will affect our society. And, for my extra-paranoid readers: "... and how it might <em>end</em> that very society."</p> <p>Until "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Geekonomics-Real-Cost-Insecure-Software/dp/0321477898">Geekonomics</a>!"</p> <p>This book might not reveal any secrets about how software works to an IT professional (it will reveal how law works though!), but it will explain why bad software is everywhere, why we are stuck with it, why it will not improve by itself and - sorry for a hysterical note here! - how <em>we might all fucking di</em>e because of it. It then unemotionally predicts why more people will certainly die because of bad software. It studies the complicated dynamics of today's software market such as who is more at fault for bad software - buyers who agree to buy or vendors who make it (or both). It also suggests that many of today's regulations and compliance "thingies" are a little misguided (e.g. in a battle a PCI DSS-compliant enterprise and a 0-day-wielding hacker, any sane person will bet on an 0-day). It is also very well-written; it won't bore an experienced IT&nbsp; or security pro and it will not overwhelm a mere IT user.</p> <p>First, it explains why the software is the "foundation of our civilization" today, and how it will be more so in the future. Next, it casts a look at "innovation" and ponders how innovation-driven software development relates to the&nbsp; fact that users don't touch 90% of features of a typical software. In the third chapter is presents the view of the "0wned world" where "only the stupid [cybercriminals] get caught."&nbsp; Next chapters looks at how government oversight works in other areas (e.g. FDA), how it might work - and how it might fail (and did fail in the past). While doing it, the book dispels the "government will just&nbsp; make it worse" myth (basically, because some things are really bad and quickly streaming towards worse already). The amazing chapter 5 gives the clearest explanation of litigation (torts, etc) that I have ever seen (the book is worth reading just for chapter 5 alone!). Chapter 6 takes a super-pessimistic look at open-source software (no comment - just read it). Finally, several possible future - "the way forward" - is discussed. </p> <p>Another thing I would like to mention about this book is that a reader should keep in mind that it is not about "<em>insecure"</em> software: it is about bad quality, <em>unsafe</em> software in general and less about "hackable" software. The author chose to not make this distinction very clear, perhaps on purpose.</p> <p>So, everybody in software business, security business - in fact, just everybody who uses a computer - <strong>MUST READ THIS BOOK!</strong> Seriously, understanding the point made there might be a matter of life or death for some (all?) of us.</p> <p>As a conclusion, if you want the visual image of the future to end my review, here it is: it is not "Terminator" future (where machines kill people out of evil) that we must fear and work to prevent, but "Robocop" future (where they do due to software bugs).</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/anton.chuvakin/SEiKbme3mxI/AAAAAAAADtA/InRvJpCVEmM/s1600-h/Robocop_VS_Terminator3.jpg"><img style="border-top-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px" height="158" alt="Robocop_VS_Terminator" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/anton.chuvakin/SEiKccFpWvI/AAAAAAAADtE/l2uUeX0GPUo/Robocop_VS_Terminator_thumb1.jpg?imgmax=800" width="102" border="0"></a> </p> <p>Go <u><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Geekonomics-Real-Cost-Insecure-Software/dp/0321477898">read the darn book!</a></u>&nbsp; And support <u><a href="http://geekonomicsbook.com/">liability for software manufactures</a></u>.
