      <title><![CDATA[A late look at Interop NY 2008]]></title>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Boy, time flies when you&#8217;re having fun.  I&#8217;ve just gotten my first opportunity to look back at the statistics from Interop NY 2008.  Of all the statistics, the ticketing ones have proven to be the most interesting - especially when you compare them to the Las Vegas show earlier in the year.  If you look back at the <a href="http://blog.sciencelogic.com/interop-vegas-2008-a-tale-of-user-error/06/2008" target="_blank">details of that ticketing review</a> the stats clearly showed that most tickets were opened due to user error.  In NY, while &#8220;user error&#8221; dominated the other categories, &#8220;facilities&#8221; came a close second.  The InteropNet Help Desk opened a total of 94 tickets during Interop NY.  Of these tickets, 42 turned out to be user error.  Coming in second, with 17 tickets were issues with the facilities, with the most common issue being cabling that had gotten damaged between installation and the time the exhibitor was trying to use it.   In Las Vegas, despite the show being significantly larger, we only saw 6 tickets of that type.  I guess you can chalk that up as yet another reason that doing shows at The Javits Center is so much fun! (Don&#8217;t ask Julia about dealing with the Javits Center. She&#8217;ll talk your ear off.)</p>
<p>After Interop Las Vegas you may have seen our analysis of the data that we collected and delivered in our NOC view.  I thought I&#8217;d recreate the same data for NY and do a short comparison.</p>
<p>1) Like in Vegas, uptime for the network 100%.  This is no small feat considering that we introduced a new wrinkle in NY, taking down the primary NOC while the education portion of the show was still going on.  This was a forced failover to the backup systems, and it went flawlessly.  I&#8217;d like to give a little credit to EM7 on the 100% uptime as it caught a failover to battery power that allowed AC to be restored before a series of critical equipment would have gone down.</p>
<p>2) Again like Vegas, the average monitored device in the show network didn&#8217;t even hit 10% CPU utilization.  Still lots of computing overhead availabe in the show network.</p>
<p>3) The NY show network wasn&#8217;t nearly as busy as in Las Vegas, sustaining an average of only 27Mbps of usage (versus 56 Mbps) in Vegas.</p>
<p>4) Power consumption for the network and NOC in NY clocked in at 445kwh per day, about 25% less than the Las Vegas show.  This wasn&#8217;t because the equipment was any more power efficient, but instead because the show was smaller and therefore there was less network gear.</p>
<p>5) Finally, a stat we didn&#8217;t track too carefully in Las Vegas, but that I find interesting.  During show hours the wireless network average 1,100 users attached.  That&#8217;s a lot of people and a lot of wireless devices.</p>
<p>The good news is there was nothing too unexpected in the data, overall the smaller show led to a smaller number of tickets and smaller consumption of resources across the board.  We hope to have the opportunity to work with the InteropNet team again next year and take a look at this data year-over-year for each show.</p>

<p>And we must point out that Hughes topped the <a href="http://www.deloitte.com/dtt/article/0,1002,sid%253D56074%2526cid%253D60248,00.html">Maryland Technology Fast 50</a> list with an astounding growth rate of <strong>138,762%</strong> over the past 5 years! Wow, it would be tough for any company in the world to beat that growth rate, but all kudos must go to Hughes and this incredible achievement. I’m sure we’ll see them on the <a href="http://www.deloitte.com/dtt/section_node/0%2C1042%2Csid%25253D56072%2C00.html">National Technology Fast 500</a> list coming out soon.</p>
<p>Now I would like to say that without ScienceLogic and EM7 much of this would not have been possible, but of course that statement would be an incredible stretch. What I can say is that our product and our technology has had a profound impact on the operational efficiency for HughesNet, so perhaps you can give us, using a basketball analogy, 12 assists in the game.</p>
<p>Interesting to note, several other award winners are in the midst of product evaluations as we speak. I think that EM7 Meta-Appliances are a strategic weapon within each of these businesses to leverage our technology in interesting ways which create huge organizational value and operational efficiencies.</p>
<p>So to all those companies who have won this year… a BIG congratulations from the bottom of my heart. For our existing customers who made the list this year… keep working hard so you can make it again next year. For ScienceLogic, stay tuned in: We were not quite big enough to make the list last year, however I am very excited about our growth in 2008 and am quietly confident that you will see us on the Virginia Fast 50 list next year!</p>

      <title><![CDATA[MSP Snapshot Monitoring with EM7]]></title>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Between the <a href="http://blog.sciencelogic.com/sciencelogics-5-year-anniversary/08/2008" target="_blank">fifth anniversary for ScienceLogic</a> and the Inc 500 milestone, we’ve become very nostalgic about the beginnings of the company and EM7. For instance, did you know that EM7 was originally designed with managed service providers in mind? Not so surprising when 5 of the first 6 employees (including all 3 founders) came from hosting and MSP backgrounds and had first-hand experience with the daily trials and tribulations of MSP operations – and the tools that didn’t quite work for them.
<p><a href="http://blog.sciencelogic.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/john-at-interop-vegas.jpg"><img style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="184" alt="John at Interop Vegas" src="http://blog.sciencelogic.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/john-at-interop-vegas-thumb.jpg" width="244" align="left" border="0"></a>Here we talk to John Proctor, who started out as one of our first customers (and the first MSP customer). And he believed in it so much, he eventually became part of the ScienceLogic team. (Remember &#8220;I&#8217;m not only the President, I&#8217;m also a client&#8221; from <a href="http://www.hairclub.com/inthenews_article1.php" target="_blank">the Hair Club for Men</a>?)
<p>John shares his perspectives about the service provider world and why he took a chance on a little-known product called EM7.
<p><strong>ScienceLogic:</strong> What is your background? How many years have you worked as a service provider and for what types of companies?
<p><strong>John Proctor:</strong> I have been working with Service providers for over twelve years. I worked at a major regional service provider for six years and before that I designed and built national and international networks for ISP’s and Fortune 500 companies as a consultant for PriceWaterhouseCoopers and WorldComm.
<p><strong>ScienceLogic:</strong> You were one of the first customers of EM7 – why did you choose it and how did you get over the hurdles associated with using a start-up company’s product?
<p><strong>John Proctor:</strong> We were actually customer number five. Back in 2004 when we evaluated and purchased EM7 we could see that EM7 provided about 80% of what we were looking for in one integrated solution right out of the box. One of the things that sold us on EM7 was that the ScienceLogic founders had all previously worked for a service provider, so we knew they understood our business and our challenges. But in the end, it comes down to features. Once we compared EM7 functionality to the alternatives, it was clearly a “no brainer.”
<p><strong>ScienceLogic:</strong> What other alternatives were being considered?
<p><strong>John Proctor:</strong> Well, we had started with a few point solutions, but as our business and product offerings matured, this resulted in a growing number of point solutions. What started with 3 or 4 ended up as 14 separate tools. They all had strengths but what they didn’t have was integration and because of this they could not scale. And, if the tools could not scale, our business could not grow.
<p>So, naturally we started looking at framework solutions, but they are expensive to buy, expensive to implement, and expensive to maintain. At one point, we even considered some open source projects. There were several that showed promise, but we would still be stuck with tools that were not integrated. So then we considered hiring developers to cobble something together that would work for our business. The only problem with this alternative was that we felt it would take 6 to 8 months before we could have something viable to work with.
<p><strong>ScienceLogic:</strong> What products were you using before EM7? What were your goals?
<p><strong>John Proctor:</strong> Before we purchased EM7 we used 14 different point solutions to deliver our products and services to the marketplace. Tools like NetCool, Openview, Argent, Heat, What’s Up Gold as well as several other point solutions, vendor specific applications and manually updated spreadsheets. And, as I mentioned before, this does not scale. This also adds a great deal of complexity when you begin to consider business continuity and disaster recovery. All these tools were vital to the delivery of our products and services. Any service provider will tell you it is all about uptime. So if the product is uptime, the tools used to deliver it have to be available 24&#215;7x365.
<p>Our goals were simple: scale and redundancy. As it turns out, the solution was simple as well. EM7 provided a tool that could replace the functionality of almost half of the existing point solutions and the applications that could not be replaced were integrated with EM7 to provide our staff with a “single pane of glass” to see the status and performance of each area of the business from one application. We had visibility into everything from facility systems to applications using EM7.
<p>ScienceLogic also delivers an extensible configuration that addressed uptime and redundancy. We deployed collectors throughout our network that reported back to a central pair of redundant database servers and with this configuration we were able to perform backups and add capacity without taking the system down.
<p><strong>ScienceLogic:</strong> Why are service providers different from enterprises? How are their needs different?
<p><strong>John Proctor:</strong> First and foremost, service providers face the same challenges that only the largest enterprises ever face and they also have many unique challenges that only service providers experience.
<p>One challenge we faced was that we had multiple datacenters in different states. They were all interconnected with plenty of bandwidth between each site, but the tools were not designed to be used across the WAN. Our staff in our remote data center did not have the same access as our staff in the corporate office. Since EM7 is web-based, it immediately eliminated this problem.
<p>Another challenge is that service providers must manage systems across multiple domains. Back in the early version of a specific tool we were using before EM7, the only way you could implement it across multiple domains was to put the same username and password on every computer that you monitored. Beyond the security concerns, maintenance was a nightmare. Anytime we had to change the password, we would get locked out of dozens upon dozens of systems. When the password was changed on the monitoring server, it would attempt to login to the remote machines and fail. Repeated attempts would result in the account getting locked. I think that vendor eventually addressed this issue, but service providers seldom find tools that were designed for their unique situations.
<p><strong>ScienceLogic:</strong> How is EM7 geared to service providers?
<p><strong>John Proctor:</strong> Enterprise IT is a trusted part of the business; they are one of the team. Service providers are outsiders that must earn trust by showing the customer exactly what they are doing.
<p>EM7 provides a multi-tenant environment that allows service providers to manage systems across many different customers while at the same time providing the customer access to see the same information but only what’s relevant to them.
<p>EM7 was built by service providers and even includes a few features just for them. Two of my favorites are bandwidth billing and the emergency notification system. Take bandwidth billing, for instance. EM7 provides a way to collect bandwidth utilization, store subscription information, and calculate a bill from any one of about 10 different methodologies. And at the end of the billing period, EM7 sends the completed report out to whomever you chose via email.
<p>Another unique service provider feature is the emergency notification system. EM7 allows the provider to track what customers used their unique infrastructure components. If they have to perform maintenance on the infrastructure component or have a problem they can send an email to all of the impacted customers in a matter of minutes.
<p><strong>ScienceLogic:</strong> What trends do you see for service providers? What about big trends such as virtualization and cloud computing – how will they impact service providers?
<p><strong>John Proctor:</strong> Virtualization is really hot for service providers right now and for the same reasons as in the enterprise. Service providers run data centers and data centers must be powered and cooled. So, anytime they can use a virtual server instead of adding physical equipment it is a good thing. But then you add the complexity that multiple customers reside on the same host and you must track things like bandwidth utilizations by guest OS, and it all gets a little harder. Lucky for us this is not a problem for EM7.
<p>I still think it’s early days for cloud computing. Depending on who you talk to, much of what service providers (especially the big ones) have already been doing with SAAS offerings and hosted applications could be described as cloud computing already. In which case, service providers are ahead of the game. But whatever the “final” definition, cloud computing actually shares many similarities with virtualization – in that service providers (or enterprises) will need to be able to manage far more “devices” in real-time with “zero downtime” expectations by customers. What this really means is that you’re going to see much more automation in provisioning and IT monitoring tools to handle the scale and speed with which things can change in the data center given vm migration and the talked-about switching between “clouds” that can be used for high availability. </p>

      <title><![CDATA[Interop NY 2008: Wrap-up]]></title>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This year was a strange year at Interop NY.  While the financial industry in NY was crumbling around us, things were <a href="http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/33059" target="_blank">strangely normal at Interop</a>.  Despite entire departments being laid-off at Lehman and elsewhere, while the show was going on, the show itself seemed mostly unaffected.  We even saw this with our annual survey - in 2007 18% of respondents were from the financial services industry, this year the sector respresented 19%.</p>
<p>Interop NY 2008 was up considerably in size from the show in 2007.  <a href="http://blog.sciencelogic.com/interview-with-lenny-heymann-interop-general-manager/09/2008" target="_blank">According to Lenny Heymann</a>, the GM of Interop, this is a trend that they expect to continue.  My personal experience was that the size of the vendors was also up this year.  I think there were so few startups that &#8220;Startup City&#8221; was pulled from the show completely.  In any case, the show floor was full and there was plenty of attendee traffic to go around.</p>
<p>Definitely helping out from a traffic and draw perspective was the addition of the Web 2.0 Expo - Interop was co-located with both Mobile Business Expo and the Web 2.0 show. It seems like that buzzword still hasn&#8217;t lost most of its luster.</p>
<p>From the InteropNet perspective, the main feeling was one of being rushed.  With the show only lasting two days, and the InteropNet team only having a couple of days of ramp up time, everything was compressed into a much shorter period than in Las Vegas.  While this would normally be a challenge, it&#8217;s an even bigger challenge at the Javits where the InteropNet team was allowed to do almost nothing ourselves because of union rules.  You&#8217;d be surprised how frustrated you can make a network guy who&#8217;s told that he has to stand there and watch the electrician plug things in, rather than just doing it himself.  The only thing faster than the InteropNet team getting the Interop NY network up, was my pedicab ride to the InteropNet Booze Cruise.<br />

<p>In any case, everything came off without a hitch, and EM7 performed flawlessly catching a couple of power outages that last day and alerting everyone before the batteries on the UPSes had a chance to run down.</p>
<p>Over the next couple of weeks I&#8217;ll analyze the data from the show to see how many tickets were handled, amount of bandwidth consumed, etc and we&#8217;ll do a comparison to Interop Las Vegas.</p>

In the midst of this <a href="http://www.grid.unep.ch/product/publication/download/ew_heat_wave.en.pdf" target="_blank">hot summer</a> madness, ScienceLogic was founded.
<p>To kick off our celebration of our first five years, we asked <a href="http://www.sciencelogic.com/leadership.htm" target="_blank">ScienceLogic founders</a> Dave Link, Richard Chart and Chris Cordray for their thoughts and memories on events leading to today’s milestone. How and why did they set out on this venture? What happened along the way – expected and unexpected? Why were they successful in times when other new (and established) businesses have come and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:2003_disestablishments" target="_blank">gone</a>?
<p><b>How did you three put together this team?</b>
<p>We all worked together at a large Managed Service Provider for a couple of years before leaving to start ScienceLogic, so we all knew each other and knew our collective strengths. More importantly, each of us had worked with network management tools on some level (sales and marketing, engineering and product development), and knew first-hand all of the customer pain points, from every perspective. So we left and began rapidly figuring out how to build a better network management solution based upon our real world operational experience..
<p><strong>Dave:</strong> One interesting aspect is that our areas of expertise don’t overlap, which has contributed to our success. Chris is excellent with developing the product front-end and interface, Richard handled the backend architecture and engineering and I focused on the technical business side of sales and marketing. Our roles have been to build a product that works well and that provides real value to operations teams that experience the same day to day frustrations that we felt.<b></b>
<p><b>Whose idea was it to start the company?</b>
<p><strong>Dave:</strong> It was really a collective effort. We were all passionate about “getting it right” and not just starting a company. We knew the industry need and between us, we had the knowledge and skill sets to address all of the right aspects of developing a product and a building a business around it.
<p><b>What process did you go through to get started?</b>
<p><strong>Richard:</strong> From the beginning we knew the type of solution the market needed and we knew that we wanted to build it as an appliance. From different vantage points, we had each experienced the effects of long, difficult and expensive installations that still exist with traditional network tools. Every install has unique variations: there are always different server types, varying hardware and software versions, different patches installed, and on and on. Every installation was time consuming and unpredictable. We knew that an appliance model would address all of these variables and save a lot of time on how quickly customers could achieve immediate value.
<p>The harder decisions were around actually starting the business, assessing the market and of course determining the product pricing.
<p><b>EM7 completely flips the traditional model of complex, lengthy and expensive deployments. How did you convince others that the EM7 Meta-Appliance product was valid?</b>
<p><strong>Dave:</strong> Yes, EM7 totally disrupts the traditional model for network management. While others take a narrow approach, we intentionally designed EM7 to focus on the broad problem – managing the data center. How do you cover a variety of technologies and make sure they work seamlessly together? The vision was to make it easier, not harder, for customers.
<p><strong>Chris:</strong> I have to give it to Dave – very early on, he realized the power of a demo. If Dave could get in front of someone, he’d make them a believer. He’d use the Peter Falk/Columbo technique of “let me show you one more thing.” It was very effective. It’s getting easier, but even today people sometimes have to see EM7 in action before they become believers.
<p><b>Can you describe the early days of running a new business?</b>
<p><strong>Dave:</strong> ScienceLogic is a classic case of entrepreneurship. For the first year we worked out of our basements. We kept the costs low in every conceivable way and spent the first year developing the product before we even made a sale.
<p><strong>Chris:</strong> We stayed at lots of odd places when we were on the road, took cheap flights with multiple layovers and purchased lots of our first test equipment on eBay. This was during the dot-com bust so there was lots of equipment for sale on eBay, really cheap!
<p><strong>Richard:</strong> The amount of equipment I had in my house was absolutely crazy. Back then, servers were huge – I had a Cisco 6509 Catalyst, a Compaq Proliant DL380, Brocade switch, IBM Netfinity 4500R, and tons of other machines.
<p><strong>Chris:</strong> I had to install a new circuit box at home because I was blowing breakers. I remember when that 6509 crashed, we revived it and it died again. The second death was final.
<p><b>So you started in your houses – what was your first office space?</b>
<p><strong>Dave:</strong> My friend, the CEO at Ernst &amp; Young Technology had a few extra cubes and a data center in their office that they graciously allowed us to use. Their help was an important step in helping us really formalize the business. We started doing well and adding people, but ironically, their company was downsizing. Before long, many of their original YET people were gone and the ScienceLogic team kept growing in to the open cubes.
<p>Our first leased space was converted warehouse space in Chantilly, VA that once housed an internet radio station. It was cool – it had a large salt water fish tank, a loft, a spiral staircase and a Star Trek door that retracted into the walls with the customary lights and “whooshing” sound.
<p>We outgrew the Chantilly space, leading to our current office in Reston, VA.
<p><b>Who was the first ScienceLogic customer?</b>
<p>Our first paying customer was <a href="http://martinspoint.com/" target="_blank">Martins Point Health Care</a>. We deployed there in July 2004 and are pleased to say they continue to be a ScienceLogic customer. Other early (and still) EM7 <a href="http://www.sciencelogic.com/customers.htm" target="_blank">customers</a> include Navy Knowledge Online and the Department of Transportation. Nearly all of our customers are still actively using EM7 and renewing their maintenance.
<p><b>Where do you see the company in the next 5, 10 or 15 years?</b>
<p>Well, our revenue has doubled year-over-year in each of the last three years, so of course we’d like to continue to grow like that or even faster. In five years we’ve gone from three founders to the point where Dave does not know everyone’s fondest childhood memory. We’ll continue to scale our growth to cover the demands of our growing customer base.
<p><b>Where do you see the industry going over the coming years?</b>
<p><strong>Chris:</strong> IT is always moving and gaining in complexity, so network management is also becoming more complicated. There’s increasing diversity, new standards, virtualization and cloud computing. All of these are today’s technologies. Customers have a mix of the old and the new, so EM7 has to accommodate and support both.
<p><strong>Richard:</strong> Each generation of products has a new set of ways to monitor, but the “old” doesn’t go away. Even when a new, hot technology comes along, the old technologies still need to be supported. We work to ensure EM7 keeps up with both.
<p><strong>Dave:</strong> After five years we’re just hitting our stride and we’re just now reaching the tipping point in awareness of ScienceLogic and EM7. We’re all still passionate about the product and as Chris and Rich said, there’s still a lot do. We’ll continue disrupting the market with EM7. Our vision hasn’t changed, and with the increasing levels of automation that customers demand, the market needs are greater than ever. Our future is as bright, or brighter, than ever and we’ll continue to be looking for smart ways to automate traditionally manual IT Operations processes.
<p><b>What’s your advice for someone interested in starting their own business?</b>
<p><strong>Chris:</strong> Be passionate. That’s what has gotten me through the tough times. I didn’t really appreciate this thought when I heard others say it before. But it’s very true.
<p><strong>Richard:</strong> I agree. We met and talked with lots of people who told us, “That’s been done before.” But we kept going because we truly believed in what we were doing and we knew that while our approach was different, that it would be successful.
<p><strong>Richard:</strong> Be fearless. You can’t be too nervous and you need to be able to expect and handle the stress because it will be there. You have to learn to accept the stressful times as a necessary part of the process of starting out on your own.
<p><strong>Dave:</strong> Know your niche from the beginning and give potential customers a compelling reason to trust you and really benefit from your solution. You have to know the problem, see the gap and have a clear and consistent vision of how to solve the problem. Then you have to execute. If you don’t build your team with “doers” you won’t make it.
<p><strong>Chris:</strong> It helps to have friends. ScienceLogic was built on friendships and relationships, starting with the three of us. If you look at our team, most of our hires are referrals – people who developed and maintained great connections with other great people throughout their careers. Maintain your connections and keep in touch with your network of friends.</p>

We thought Mike would have an interesting perspective to share on EM7, having recently come from the “customer side” and already with a few deployments under his belt.
<p><b>ScienceLogic: Mike, what’s your background working with network and management system tools?</b>
<p><b>Mike Lawson: </b>Before joining Apptis, I worked for the Air Force, mainly in satellite communications for almost nine years. I’m probably most familiar with HP OpenView and BMC Remedy. I managed a team that used them but wasn’t involved in tool selection; like many other federal IT workers, we didn’t have a choice of tools because there were existing enterprise licenses and maintenance contracts.
<p>I also saw a large systems integrator do a full Remedy/Crystal Systems/OpenView installation. It took 6 weeks to stand up and customize to meet just the basic monitoring requirements, and it cost something like half a million dollars. At the time, I thought that wasn’t bad and was a pretty typical experience.
<p><b>ScienceLogic: Coming from where you did, what’s your take on EM7?</b>
<p><strong>Mike Lawson:</strong> Honestly, I didn’t believe that EM7 could really do all that it claimed. In many ways, it was the complete opposite of what I had seen first-hand with other monitoring solutions. Could it really cover that much functionality? At relatively much lower cost to the customer and without the licensing nightmare?
<p>That quickly changed when I needed to understand the system enough to run it at a customer’s site. I went back over the training docs I received during my initial training class and jumped in; now, 6 months later, I’m the EM7 expert and can tell you that it delivers on all those promises. (But I still need to show people to get them to believe it too)
<p>I preach the “EM7 gospel” and when anyone wants to talk monitoring, I ask about the universal pain points: cost, maintenance contracts and licensing, and then I explain EM7. The cost difference is real; the solution is based on capacity, so there’s no licensing and it’s easy to use. They are shocked to learn that they can buy multiple EM7 appliances and years of maintenance for what they paid for most other tools.
<p><b>ScienceLogic: Apptis won the contract for monitoring aboard the USNS Mercy. We love that you’re using EM7 for one of the Navy’s hospital ships. Can you tell us more?</b>
<p><strong>Mike Lawson:</strong> The USNS Mercy is a Military Sealift Command hospital ship. <a href="http://www.navy.mil/navydata/fact_display.asp?cid=4400&amp;tid=400&amp;ct=4" target="_blank">Some stats</a>:
<ul>
<li>849 feet long (nearly the size of a football field)
<li>12 fully-equipped operating rooms, a 1,000 bed hospital facility, digital radiological services, a diagnostic and clinical laboratory, a pharmacy, an optometry lab, a CAT scan and two oxygen producing plants
<li>Crew: 61 civilian mariners, 956 Naval medical staff, and 259 Naval support staff</li>
</ul>
<p>The USNS recently departed on a five-month humanitarian mission in the Western Pacific and Southeast Asia in support of Pacific Partnership 2008. The partnership provides international medical, dental and engineering teams this summer to provide humanitarian support and conduct joint, combined, and cooperative Civil-Military Operations in order to improve regional stability and build partner capacity to respond to natural disasters and pandemic.
<p>For the most part, the ship’s network is self-contained, but can also use a landline when docked. The network covers 400 devices, including Windows/Exchange servers and VMware for server virtualization. Prior to using EM7, none of the monitoring was integrated; each system was independently monitored through individual vendor-specific consoles.
<p>Out of the box, EM7 provided integrated systems, application and network management for all network gear, applications and virtual machines in one solution. We didn’t have to do a lot of customization – EM7 includes best-practice based thresholds, event and monitoring templates and this covered what USNS Mercy needed to monitor.
<p><b>ScienceLogic: You’re a systems integrator with a very useful “customer point of view” when it comes to looking at tools. From that perspective, can you share what you think are the biggest benefits that EM7 provides?</b>
<p><strong>Mike Lawson:</strong> First of all, EM7 stands up right away. We’re talking days, not weeks. In contrast to the lengthy installation of OpenView and Remedy I witnessed during my military career, I was able to configure, customize, and implement the EM7 solution for the USNS Mercy in three days.
<p>Second, it’s easy to train people on and the support is outstanding. This judgment is from first-hand experience. Right before the USNS Mercy departed on its latest voyage, the system administrator I had trained on EM7 left, so I had all of a day to train some new EM7 admins. I prepared a seven-page “cheat sheet” and over a 3-hour conference call, we walked through the entire EM7 solution; I haven’t gotten a support call since.
<p>And when a problem did crop up with a device being discovered incorrectly, ScienceLogic was very responsive. We contacted ScienceLogic support on a Saturday and they created and emailed us a video to help troubleshoot the same day. Within 30 seconds of watching the video, the problem was resolved.
<p>Finally, EM7 helps us be good stewards of the government’s money. This is very important to me personally and to Apptis as a company. Because EM7 is cheaper and deploys so quickly and easily, you might think that it’s just the opposite of what a system integrator would want to use. But that’s short-term thinking. We believe in deliver the most value for customers every time. It’s what creates trust and long-term relationships with our customers. Instead of that half million spent on standing up the solution and basic setup, I’d much rather (and I know the customer would rather) spend that on fine-tuning or extending the solution to do much, much more.
<p>As a former government employee, I know what it’s like to use a tool that doesn’t fit my needs. EM7 proves that the best solution can totally break the old model of costly, lengthy installations. EM7 has the right model: the right solution and the right price delivered as an appliance that is easy to deploy, train on and use. </p>

      <title><![CDATA[Q&A with Sergey Katsev of Coyote Point Systems]]></title>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I recently had the opportunity to sit down with <a href="http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=24405331" target="_blank">Sergey Katsev</a>, an Engineering Project Manager at <a href="http://coyotepoint.com/" target="_blank">Coyote Point Systems</a> and discuss his experiences with InteropNet and talk about the Coyote Point products.  With a couple of years of experience as a vendor for Interop, he had some interesting insights in to how participating in the InteropNet can help a vendor.</p>
<p><strong>ScienceLogic:</strong> How long have you been involved in InteropNet?</p>
<p><strong>Katsev: </strong>I started at Coyote Point 3 years ago and <a href="http://blog.interop.com/2006" target="_blank">InteropNet 2006</a> was my first &#8220;big&#8221; assignment.  This was the first time Coyote Point had put in a proposal to participate, so we were very excited when we were selected.</p>
<p><strong></strong></p>
<p><strong>ScienceLogic: </strong>How long has Coyote Point been involved in Interop overall?</p>
<p><strong>Katsev: </strong>We&#8217;ve been exhibiting at Interop for a number of years, and after seeing the InteropNet in action, we decided to submit a proposal in &#8216;06.  We were actually one of the first companies in the load balancing/traffic management space (we&#8217;ve been doing this for almost 10 years), so we have a lot of experience to share with InteropNet.</p>
<p><strong>ScienceLogic:</strong> What is your role at Coyote Point?</p>
<p>My official title is &#8220;Engineering Project Manager&#8221;.  Basically, that means that I&#8217;m in charge of product releases and maintenance.  It sounds like a weird title for someone participating in InteropNet, but I&#8217;ve actually found it extremely useful since my position means that I don&#8217;t get to see our systems out in the field a lot.  We&#8217;ve added several features and have ideas for others just from my experiences at InteropNet.</p>
<p><strong></strong></p>
<p><strong>ScienceLogic:</strong> What do the Coyote Point products do?</p>
<p><strong>Katsev: </strong>Coyote Point makes a Traffic Management appliance called <a href="http://coyotepoint.com/products/e650.php" target="_blank">Equalizer</a>.  What this means is that any traffic destined for a datacenter&#8217;s servers goes through our appliances and we make sure that the server which is best equipped to handle it, does.  Our systems sit between the clients and the servers and monitor the client traffic and the state of the servers.  If the clients start sending more traffic, we&#8217;ll balance it out so that no server is overloaded.  If one of the servers stops responding or starts responding very slowly, we&#8217;ll steer traffic away from that server.</p>
<p><strong>ScienceLogic: </strong>In what way are your products being used as part of InteropNet?</p>
<p><strong>Katsev: </strong>In the InteropNet, we&#8217;re utilizing a lot of our expertise:  We&#8217;re making sure that traffic is balanced and servers are redundant for show services such as DNS and SMTP.  We&#8217;re also using our geographic load balancing technology to ensure that the ScienceLogic EM7 appliances and some other internal NOC services are available from anywhere, with the lowest latency, with our <a href="http://www.coyotepoint.com/products/xcel.php" target="_blank">SSL acceleration </a>and <a href="http://www.coyotepoint.com/products/express.php" target="_blank">GZIP compression technology</a>.  Finally, we&#8217;re helping logistics in the NOC by allowing a physical separation between systems <a href="http://blog.interop.com/interopnet/2008/04/what-are-these-peds-you-speak-of" target="_blank">located in the NOC</a> and those in an emergency rack outside of the NOC.  If either of these two locations were to fail, the network will continue operating without a glitch.</p>
<p><strong>ScienceLogic:</strong> Are there any special considerations for Interop that cause you to deploy your systems there differently that any other place?</p>
<p><strong>Katsev: </strong>Interop is definitely different than most of our customer installations.   One difference from a standard environment is that the network (at least this year) is one large flat network, with pieces carved out where extra security is needed.  Because of this, we can actually run our failover pairs of Equalizer systems in a non-standard configuration where the two peers are in different racks, or even on different floors.  That&#8217;s one of the things that I really like about InteropNet &#8212; it definitely brings new ideas to mind, which end up becoming &#8217;special configuration&#8217; white papers after the show.</p>
<p><strong>ScienceLogic:</strong> Has InteropNet taught you anything that caused you to actually change your product?</p>
<p><strong>Katsev: </strong>In addition to the failover configuration differences I mentioned above, participating in InteropNet has actually caused us to add several new features and allowed configurations.  One example is the &#8220;no-spoof&#8221; option for <a href="http://www.springerlink.com/content/dcmmpmb53rjp5hr8/" target="_blank">Layer 4 clusters</a>.  Prior to the 2006 shows, we always &#8217;spoofed&#8217; the client&#8217;s IP address when talking to a server so that the server would see the client&#8217;s IP address instead of our own.  At Interop, we ran into a special configuration which would&#8217;ve been very difficult to set up in this manner, so our engineers added this feature, and it&#8217;s been very a very popular configuration with our customers ever since.</p>
<p>We have also had a couple of business relationships that extended outside of the show.  In 2006, we had a good experience using <a href="http://www.spirent.com/analysis/index.cfm?media=3&amp;ws=2" target="_blank">Spirent Communications</a> gear to benchmark the network, so we ended up purchasing a couple of these systems to test our products.  More recently, we have found a way to bundle our Equalizer e350si load balancers with the ScienceLogic <a href="http://www.sciencelogic.com/techdiagram.htm" target="_blank">EM7 collector appliances</a> to help ScienceLogic get the best performance in load balancing large quantities of syslog messages to be processed.  If it wasn&#8217;t for our participation in InteropNet, neither of these relationships would&#8217;ve happened.</p>
<p><strong>ScienceLogic: </strong>What’s the best part of being involved with InteropNet?  What do you most look forward to?</p>
<p><strong>Katsev: </strong>InteropNet is an amazing networking opportunity (no pun intended).  The group of engineers that put the network together every year is, well, amazing.  There is so much combined experience that any question instantly has several possible answers, and the best answer is chosen very quickly.  One of the &#8217;sayings&#8217; at Interop is &#8220;if you run into a problem, ask someone&#8230; we&#8217;ve probably seen that problem before&#8230; five times.&#8221;  One would think that being part of InteropNet is the same thing, year after year.  However, in the two years that I&#8217;ve been part of this (for four shows), there have been huge differences in the way that the network is designed and put together.  These are both because the vendors selected every year are different, and because the engineers who design the network change from year to year.  Somehow, though, when all is said and done, we have a <a href="http://blog.sciencelogic.com/interop-las-vegas-2008-some-interesting-stats/06/2008" target="_blank">network that works</a>.</p>
<p><strong>ScienceLogic:</strong> You don’t have to answer this one if you’re not comfortable… What would you like to see changed with the way things are done at InteropNet?</p>
<p><strong>Katsev: </strong>This isn&#8217;t a cop-out&#8230; I really can&#8217;t think of anything I would do differently.  Sure, there are small problems that pop up sometimes, but every project has those, and the people at InteropNet are more than capable of figuring them all out.  In fact, I know that Interop started out as a show to test the interoperability of devices&#8230; but I&#8217;m still amazed that all of these devices actually talk to each other and <a href="http://blog.sciencelogic.com/qa-with-geoff-horne-of-interopnet/06/2008" target="_blank">&#8220;play nice&#8221; together</a>.</p>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Too bad there is no Kaplan Test Prep equivalent for FISMA.
<p>For the third year in a row, the government’s overall FISMA grade improved. But don’t get too excited; the grade only <a href="http://republicans.oversight.house.gov/media/PDFs/Reports/FY2007FISMAReportCard.pdf" target="_blank">improved from a C- to a C</a> this year. (And D+ in 2005).
<p>But there’s a lot to hide in an “average grade”. Turns out that the reality is a split between <a href="http://www.fcw.com/online/news/152595-1.html">overachievers and underachievers</a>.
<p>The agencies/departments with a grade of A-, A or A+:
<ul>
<li>Department of Justice</li>
<li>US AID</li>
<li>EPA</li>
<li>NSF</li>
<li>SSA</li>
<li>HUD</li>
<li>OPM (I would hope so)</li>
</ul>
<p>And, sadly the ones that got an F:
<ul>
<li>Department of the Interior</li>
<li>Department of Treasury</li>
<li>Nuclear Regulatory Commission</li>
<li>Department of Veterans Affairs</li>
<li>Department of Agriculture</li>
</ul>
<p>FISMA (Federal Information Security Management Act) became a federal law back in 2002 as part of the E-Government Act. Six years later, there has been improvement, but there’s still clearly a long way to go.
<p>So what’s the disconnect? Speaking from a vendor perspective, we’ve had first-hand experience with the lack of actionable, concrete guidelines around FISMA – for processes, monitoring and check-list assessment items. We even contacted NIST directly to get more guidance on how their very broad guidelines should be translated to actual features and reporting in something like our monitoring solution. The end goal, after all, is to help our government customers not only meet the FISMA requirements but also to be seen/assessed as meeting those requirements. As we do for other compliance/governance requirements like Sarbanes-Oxley, the more that EM7 can automate and report on, the better.
<p>But that leads to the second issue here. How accurate is the FISMA scorecard? <a href="http://www.scmagazineus.com/Government-vertical-Is-FISMA-working/article/58396/" target="_blank">SC Magazine</a> writes, “Many have seen organizations get an A when they believe they should have received an F, and vice versa” and some experts “blame this on the lack of a standardized evaluation, as well as censorship among auditors.” There’s talk about language ambiguities and opinions that the scorecard is not “one size fits all” – <a href="http://www.compliancehome.com/news/FISMA/10477.html" target="_blank">that small agencies face different IT security challenges than the big guys</a>.
<p>So what’s right about FISMA? We can point to a heightened awareness about the importance of security and the “security picture” in each federal agency. Certainly, from our own <a href="http://www.sciencelogic.com/pdf/FOSE_SurveyComparison.pdf" target="_blank">survey at FOSE</a>, we saw the difference just from last year to this one:
<ul>
<li>91% surveyed said FISMA was important (up from 66% last year)</li>
<li>Over 50% had solutions installed to help with FISMA (up from only 14% last year)</li>
</ul>
<p>Based on these numbers, we’re not surprised to see the FISMA average grade go up, but we expected it to be even higher. So what will it take to get the government on the honor roll? From <a href="http://republicans.oversight.house.gov/news/PRArticle.aspx?NewsID=362" target="_blank">Rep. Tom Davis</a>, “We need to seriously consider incentives for agency success and funding penalties and personnel reforms for agencies that don’t measure up…We need a bill with teeth, and we need agencies to understand the goal is to keep information safe, not to check a statutory box.”</p>

<p><strong>ScienceLogic:</strong> What&#8217;s your real job when you&#8217;re not here?</p>
<p><strong>Cummings:</strong> I&#8217;m a consultant. I have a networking services company through which I offer services all the way from Layer 1 to desktop support.</p>
<p><strong>ScienceLogic:</strong> How long have you been involved with Interop?</p>
<p><strong>Cummings:</strong> I attended my first show in <a href="http://www.thevarguy.com/2006/09/19/interop-2006-vs-interop/">1996</a>. I volunteered for my first shown in <a href="http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-54672240.html">1999</a> and haven&#8217;t missed a year since.</p>
<p><strong>ScienceLogic: </strong>What makes you want to come back each year for the additional punishment?</p>
<p><strong>Cummings:</strong> Working with <a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3009/2454750176_812e3a5522_o.jpg">the team</a>, which are long-term established friendships at this point. That and the excitement of working with the new technologies as they or even before they come out.</p>
<p><strong>ScienceLogic: </strong>In <a href="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2128/2453915813_6f2f63f8b9_o.jpg">Las Vegas</a> you were Team Lead for Help Desk. What are you going be doing in NY?</p>
<p><strong>Cummings: </strong>Same thing. That position incorporates some management over the show floor and off-show floor area. That&#8217;s kinda where they put me and I&#8217;ve been doing it solidly for about 5 years.</p>
<p><strong>ScienceLogic:</strong> What are the biggest changes you&#8217;ve seen in the show over the years, what sticks out?</p>
<p><strong>Cummings: </strong>The amount of monitoring that we have and what we do with it has really been changing. We went from more, to almost none and now back to more. We&#8217;ve been through numerous vendors and apps over the years and until recently weren&#8217;t overly happy.</p>
<p><strong>ScienceLogic: </strong>Did the integration between Service Desk and Monitoring that ScienceLogic created help streamline things in a meaningful manner?</p>
<p><strong>Cummings:</strong> Absolutely. In the short time that we have to get things setup there&#8217;s no way to integrate multiple products in this area. Having things pre-integrated allowed us to quickly link network events and the related tickets together in the management system [EM7].</p>
<p><strong>ScienceLogic: </strong>Moving forward on the Service Desk, do you think you can move away from your current paper driven process to a completely paperless process?</p>
<p><strong>Cummings</strong>: I could potentially see it changing as we get the process down and fine tune it. We might be able to get an electronic interface for people. It&#8217;s tough. There&#8217;s always going to be an aspect of the shows we have to hand off on paper and get to legacy people such as electricians and movers.</p>
<p><strong>ScienceLogic: </strong>If there was one thing you could improve that you think would make the overall show or help desk operate better, what would it be?</p>
<p><strong>Cummings: </strong>We need to keep refining processes down to get information into EM7. Better for using the integration and automation that already exists in EM7.</p>
