<p>He's not very positive about it, because his research shows a mismatch between claims and work. He writes that an unnamed American airline executive is frustrated by the delay in launching the 3-to-6 month pilot on their trans-continental fleet; that Aircell hasn't submitted paperwork for Virgin's Airbus models for certification; and that the FAA just received a request to certify Delta's MD-80 craft, which makes a launch with 75 planes this year on that airline less likely.</p>

<p>Competitor Row 44 doesn't fare better in his analysis, as they promised spring and summer 2008 tests that still haven't happened, with Southwest and Alaska Airlines.</p>

<p>I'm a little more positive about the future of in-flight broadband. There's no particular conspiracy. It's hard to make it work. Development and testing is tricky due to FAA limits, and getting in-flight handoffs to work for seamless service at 35,000 feet is far more difficult than, say, cellular handoffs in a moving car at 100 feet above sea level. My suspicion is that tuning the service to be entirely reliable at launch is what's taking so long.</p>

<p>Brancatelli blames the high price of Connexion on its failure, but I don't think the $27 fee for long-haul flights deterred users. Lufthansa, which deployed all its long-haul fleet, apparently had very good usage. Most other airlines had few craft equipped, which didn't allow business travelers, able to expense several hours of work for a $27 fee, the reliability of having on-board Internet when they needed it. Connexion also had many reports of spotty service in certain areas. </p>

<p>Connexion's failure came from deploying technology that was old when it was deployed, which weighed too much, and which was too expensive to install. Connexion's revenue and expenses were forecast based on having several hundred aircraft with Connexion service--recall that it was supposed to be a domestic U.S. service, too. In the end they had about 100, I believe. </p>

<p>Brancatelli is also modest when he says Boeing "lost" $300m. That's part of what they wrote down. My sources say they spent more than a billion in R&D, transponder leases, ground station operation, airline incentives, and payoffs at the end.</p>]]></content:encoded>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[Sometimes, two negatives do make a positive. Gartner has avoided using the term UTM (that is, unified threat management) in our research because:<br />
<br />
1.	You can't (and wouldn't want to) manage threats.<br />
2.	UTM originally applied to products for small and midsize businesses (SMBs), but UTM has been recently co-opted by some enterprise security vendors under the guise of fresh marketing.<br />
3.	There is little evidence that many of the components in these platforms are integrated, much less "unified." Now, there is some promotion of the new acronym XTM (that is, eXtensible threat management) as a new generation of UTM. We're not referring to any product name, but the attempt to create a new and confusing acronym, and create another artificial market to size and make predictions about.<br />
<br />
No matter what you call it, the arc of advancement of network security products for the SMB will continue: New threats will drive the development of new safeguards that will be included as an option in that same appliance. This is not true for the enterprise, where best-of-breed buying of point solutions will continue, with consolidation of products occurring in three places, aligned by buying center and safeguard profile (see <a href="http://my.gartner.com/portal/server.pt?gr=dd&docCode=146229&ref=g_itlsite"  target="http://my.gartner.com/portal/server.pt?gr=dd&docCode=146229&ref=g_itlsite"  >"Introducing the Secure Web Gateway"</a>). <br />
<br />
The next-generation firewall (NGFW) will serve the enterprise and combine firewall and IPS,; however, there will be no UTM for the enterprise (see <a href="http://my.gartner.com/portal/server.pt?gr=dd&docCode=151129&ref=g_itlsite"  target="http://my.gartner.com/portal/server.pt?gr=dd&docCode=151129&ref=g_itlsite"  >"Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Network Firewalls, 2H07"</a>). We are already seeing SMB multifunction firewall vendors optimizing performance by assigning separate ASICs, emphasizing that the inspection tasks on content and network processing are very different (see <a href="http://my.gartner.com/portal/server.pt?gr=dd&docCode=159003&ref=g_itlsite"  target="http://my.gartner.com/portal/server.pt?gr=dd&docCode=159003&ref=g_itlsite"  >"MarketScope for Multifunction Firewalls for Small and Midsize Businesses"</a>). Even among SMBs, we are seeing little evidence that many are deploying network, content and e-mail processing in the same platform, usually leaving e-mail security to a separate product or service.]]></content:encoded>

And those who look, usually end up finding.<br />

The result? <a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=1598">Cybercrime groups filing for bankruptcy unable to achieve a positive return on investment</a> due to their intellectual property getting pirated and their inability to enforce the licenses that they issue to their customers.<br />
<br />
We're definitely going to see more trivial, but then again, remotely exploitable vulnerabilities within popular crimeware kits, which can assist both the cybercrime analysts and naturally the cybercriminals themselves. For the time being, even the most sophisticated malware campaigns aren't fully taking advantage of the evasive and stealth tactics that the kits, or their common sense allows them to - let's see for how long.<br />

In fact, malicious attackers have been building so much confidence in this risk-forwarding process of hosting their campaigns, that they would start actively spamming the links residing within low-profile legitimate sites across the web.<br />
<br />
This campaign serving fake flash players is getting so prevalent these days due to the multiple spamming approaches used, that it's hard not to notice it - and expose it. From a strategic perspective, having a legitimate low-profile site -- of course with the obvious exceptions being on purposely registered for malicious purposes within the participating sites -- hosting your malicious campaign is pretty creative in terms of forwarding the responsibility, and the eventual blocking of a legitimate site to the its owner. As far as the owner's are concerned, it appears that some of them are already seeing the malware page popping-up on the top of their daily traffic stats, and have taken measures to remove it.<br />
<br />
Moreover, <a href="http://blogs.adobe.com/psirt/2008/08/verifying_installers.html">Adobe's Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT) issued a warning notice about the attack yesterday</a>, which could come handy if the <a href="http://www.infoworld.com/article/08/08/05/Adobe_warns_of_bogus_Flash_Player_installers_1.html">attackers weren't taking advantage of client-side vulnerabilities</a>, putting the unware end user is a situation where he <a href="http://blogs.stopbadware.org/articles/2008/08/05/same-dogs-new-tricks">wouldn't even receive a download dialog</a> :<br />

The installer, posted on a malicious site, of course installs malware instead of Flash Player.We’d like to take this opportunity to reiterate the importance of validating installers and updates before installing them. First off, do not download Flash Player from a site other than adobe.com – you can find the link for downloading Flash Player here. This goes for any piece of software (Reader, Windows Media Player, Quicktime, etc.) – if you get a notice to update, it’s not a bad idea to go directly to the site of the software vendor and download the update directly from the source. If the download is from an unfamiliar URL or an IP address, you should be suspicious.</i>"<br />

On each and every site, there are <b>dnd.js</b> and <b>master.js</b> scripts shich serve the rogue download window, and another .html file, where an IFRAME attempts to access the traffic management command and control, in a random URL it was <b>207.10.234.217/cgi-bin/index.cgi?user200</b>. </b>Take for instance the Hack in the Box security conference, which is considered as the <a href="http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/hitb.org/downloads/11950271/">download publisher of a file hosted at packetstormsecurity.org</a>. What's interesting to point out is that just like a huge percentage of already flagged as potentially harmful sites that haven't been re-checked in months, with Hack in the Box's case the link was last checked in February, 2008. And since <b>hitb.org</b> is now distributing spyware, any site that it links to is also flagged as badware, like <b>hackinthebox.org</b> itself :<br />
<br />
"<i>When we tested this site we found links to hitb.org, which we found to be a distributor of downloads some people consider adware, spyware or other potentially unwanted programs.</i>'<br />
<br />
These sites aren't SQL injected, IFRAME-ed or embedded with malware whatsoever, so it's like flagging a gun store as a malicious store because of the inventory there - wrong generalization aiming to bring order into the underground chaos at the first place is prone to result in lots of false positives, <a href="http://ddanchev.blogspot.com/2007/07/insecure-bureaucracy-in-germany.html">a wrong mentality that certain countries are starting to embrace</a>.</div><br />
The bottom line - is the "<i>do not visit unknown or potentially harmful sites</i>" security tip on the verge of extinction? Probably, as these days, exploited legitimate sites are hosting or redirecting to more malware than potentially harmful sites are.<div class="feedflare">

        I woke this morning to find an interesting set of blog entries regarding the Wall-E demo game from THQ - someone downloaded the demo and found their AV scanner flagging it as potentially dangerous.<br /><br />A quick roundup of posts:<br /><br /><b>1)</b> Security researcher Timeless Prototype downloads the Wall-E demo, only to find his <a href="http://www.timelessprototype.com/tpdc/blog/post/2008/08/Keylogger-Detected-in-Wall-E-Demo-PC-Game.aspx">antivirus software going crazy</a>. It has detected <a href="http://securityresponse.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2004-052616-5512-99">Spyware.Ardakey</a>.<br /><br /><b>2)</b> Over at Spyware Sucks, Sandi Hardmeier decides to try <a href="http://msmvps.com/blogs/spywaresucks/archive/2008/08/03/1643166.aspx">downloading versions of the game from different regions</a>, only to find the French, German ,Danish and Italian versions are all 177MB in size, whereas the US version is "only" 133MB. Furthermore, the 177MB versions all have different filenames. Note that (so far) it's the UK version (clocking in at 177MB) that has been snagged by an antivirus program. As Sandi notes, there is no way an extra 40-odd MB are needed for a keylogger, so why the extra filesize?<br /><br />3) Wayne Porter <a href="http://www.wayneporter.com/2008/08/02/keyloggers-games/">contacted Cachefly</a> (who manage the servers the game is downloading from), and they said this:<br /><br /><i>"I can confirm that our servers were not compromised, beyond that I can't offer much else.<br /><br />Obviously we'd like to be as helpful as possible, but since it's related to customer data we're rather limited in what we can discuss. I've opened a ticket to make THQ aware of this, and we can/will work them on tracking stuff down if we need to (we do have a history of all versions of a file w/ filesizes/md5 checksums, and the dates/times/src ip of all revisions)."</i><br /><br />The 177MB file is still available to download, I grabbed it a little earlier on today:<br /><br /><span class="mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image" style="display: inline;"><img alt="walle3.jpg" src="http://blog.spywareguide.com/images/walle3.jpg" class="mt-image-none" style="" height="186" width="380" /></span>
<br /><br />What we <i>really</i> need to know, is if this is anything to be worried about or not. I would have contacted THQ UK directly, but they <a href="http://www.thq-games.com/uk/pages/contact">don't seem to be available</a> on a Sunday. Until this is resolved one way or another, I'd have to advise people not to download this demo as a precaution until THQ (or Norton, whose AV program flagged the file) have clarified exactly what is going on here. We're currently running some more antivirus / antispyware scans against the download in question, but as you can imagine, this takes some time. A particular problem here is that there are issues submitting a file like this to sites such as <a href="http://www.virustotal.com/">Virustotal.com</a>, because of their 10MB file size limit.<br /><br />Sorting this one out might take a while...<br /><br />/ Update - some people are saying AVAST <a href="http://games.internode.on.net/forums/viewtopic.php?p=1844560">flags the file</a>, too.<br />

      <title><![CDATA[Poor security quality in software. Someone is watching over me.]]></title>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Last week, Ben Worthen of the Wall Street Journal had a <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/biztech/2008/07/21/buggy-software-is-your-fault-too/?mod=djemTECH">conversation</a> with Howard Schmidt about the vulnerabilities in purchased software while Howard was waiting on line to have his iPhone upgraded.</p>
<p>Howard Schmidt, who was once the CSO of Microsoft, knows a thing or two about vendors shipping insecure software.  He offers this advice relating to his iPhone, &#8220;Just because a piece of software was distributed through Apple’s App Store, don’t assume that it is vulnerability free.&#8221;  I think that sums up the problem pretty well.  Customers assume the software they are getting is vulnerability free until it is proved otherwise.</p>
<p>If it&#8217;s distributed by the Apple Store it is coming from a trusted brand. &#8220;It must be secure&#8221;, many think.  The same thinking is used by people who install social networking applets and give them access to their personal data.  Someone, somewhere is taking care of the software security so I don&#8217;t have to.  It must be the platform provider, the store, some industry body, my antivirus provider, or maybe even the government.</p>

<p>You can see how this thinking pervades the consumer space because there are regulatory bodies governing all other aspects of safety and security in our personal lives.  I&#8217;m safe in a plane or car because the government is looking out for me with standards and testing requirements.  I am safe in the mall parking lot because the men in the white SUV are patrolling.</p>
<p>This thinking also pervaded the b2b space.  I talk to companies which are outsourcing critical applications to offshore development companies and they assume that security testing is taking place as part of the development process.  I ask them if they have made security quality part of the requirements of the project and they say no.  Then I ask them what evidence does the offshore developer provide to demonstrate they have a certain level of security quality in the software they are producing and they tell me they have never asked.</p>
<p>I can tell you what would happen if they did ask because I have also spoken with the offshore developers.  They have no evidence.  Their concern is getting the software functionality done on time and on budget. They consider fixing security vulnerabilities, once discovered, rework which the customer pays for.  So not only are they not looking for vulnerabilities and relying on the customer to find them, they are charging the customer to fix the problems.  The customer has to this date accepted this model.</p>
<p>The same goes for commercial off the shelf software and open source.  Surely the developers writing the software are trained in secure software engineering.  Surely commercial software companies are using 3rd parties to test their software just like the banks have the big 4 audit their accounting or auto manufacturers submit to testing by the <a href="http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/">NHTSA</a>. And of course open source has &#8220;many eyes&#8221; reviewing the code for security defects and informing the developers.  The customer has accepted a model where this is almost never true.</p>
<p>But times are changing and it is partially due to the availability of software that can automate the process of looking for security vulnerabilities. David Rice, the author of <a href="http://www.geekonomicsbook.com/">&#8220;Geekanomics: The Real Cost of Insecure Software&#8221;</a> was <a href="http://beastorbuddha.com/2008/07/29/talking-with-david-rice-insecure-software-implications-regulation-vendors-making-change-and-other-things/">interviewed recently by Drazin Drazic his Beast or Buddha blog</a>.  He said the trend is toward a future of secure software and automated security analysis is one of the sparks:</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>BorB: I recently wrote in a post that little is changing. We are not learning from the lessons of the past. There are few, if any new technologies that exist today, that we have great faith and trust in as being secure now, and expecting them to continue to be secure in the future. Any solutions to even basic security issues need a starting point and a significant change to current thinking, and even then, it will takes years to see the impacts of this. What are your thoughts on this? Are we seeing anything at present to make us more confident of the future?</strong></p>
<p>DR: It is true that it takes years to see the positive impacts of a change of mindset. And we are in the unfortunate position of repeating many old lessons.</p>
<p>At base, human history is a collection of exhaustive, expensive, and protracted engagements; only the relentless survive and have a chance at succeeding (notice no guarantee here). Confronting some of our most complex problems like highway safety, nuclear proliferation, or insecure software is painful, difficult, complicated, and troublesome. Human endeavors of any significance are like this. But we must do it. The inertia of culture and status quo is difficult to overcome, but overcome it we can; otherwise, we would not have the better parts of the world we enjoy today.</p>
<p>I believe the technology space is no different. We are just a little dazed and bewildered by all the changes technology has introduced so quickly and on such a grand scale. For every change we react to, another two or three rapidly appear.</p>
<p>I do see sparks of hope emerging. In the United States some members of government are beginning to understand the problem and are willing to start discussing how to approach insecure software from a policy perspective. On the technology front, companies like Ounce, Fortify, and Veracode are beginning to give software buyers an automated method of evaluating assurance levels of software. While not complete in and of themselves, these solutions are, as I stated, “sparks” that can help us progress down paths that were once not easily open to us.</p>
<p>As for the larger issue of cyber security, which software assurance is only a part of, society has a lot of adjusting to do. The Internet is a new environment for many still, and many more to come. There is a learning curve that must be confronted. It took the United States almost 80 years to develop the highway system we know and enjoy today. Nearly $400 billion was spent on this endeavor with hundreds of thousands of lives lost. As this shows, learning how to govern and navigate a new environment is expensive. Failing to learn even more so.</p></blockquote>
<p>Independent, automated, and repeatable software security testing is an essential component of a safe and secure online environment.  Without it we are stuck with the assumption of vendors perfoming software security as our imaginary security blanket that allows us to operate in the current online world.</p>

<p>On July 8th, Dan Kaminsky of IOActive announced a major DNS “vulnerability” in conjunction with a number of major DNS vendors. The announcement was off the charts in fanfare and attention, but what was the real impact on risk?</p>

It combines two vulnerabilities that have been well-known for some time – the ability to guess non-random transaction IDs and the use of Additional RRs to insert new entries into the DNS cache. A fix against either of these vulnerabilities also negates the attack itself.</p>

<p>The fundamental question that determines the risk impact revolves around whether it is reasonable to expect fewer or more incidents that use this technique when comparing the period prior to disclosure -- or, more properly, before the date of Dan’s invention of the technique (this also assumes prior art) – with the period after invention/disclosure and into the future. If the disclosure reduces the number of those incidents, then risk is reduced; if the disclosure increases the number of those incidents, then risk is increased.</p>

<p>With that litmus test as our guideline, it is useful to break down the functional elements of risk and look at the impact on threats, vulnerabilities, and consequences (we will cover consequences, then vulnerabilities, and finally threat).</p>

<p><strong>Consequences</strong><br />Though the consequences are the same before and after disclosure, it is worth discussing the impact here, given that the implication was that the “entire web” could be taken down. The nature of the attack requires the following:</p>

<ol><li>An attacker must convince/trick a user into making a DNS request for a domain that doesn’t already exist in their DNS server’s cache. The expectation here is that s/he can be easily tricked into doing this.</li>

<li>Then, the attacker must simultaneously attack the DNS server by guessing the transaction ID. According to Kaminsky, the request/attack phase can be done reliably in about 10 seconds.</li>

<li>The attack is DNS server-specific. Only users on the same DNS server are affected.</li>

<li>Propagation: once the cache is poisoned, anyone requesting that domain will be routed to a malicious server.</li></ol>

<p>Without combining this attack with other attack techniques, there can be three results:</p>

<ol><li>Spoofing of a single website for multiple, perhaps many, users using the same DNS server. Presumably, this would be followed by more traditional phishing and malware attacks.</li>

<li>Denial-of-service by rerouting traffic from a legitimate site thereby taking potential customers or “eyeballs” away.</li>

<li>Denial-of-service be rerouting traffic from a legitimate high volume site to a legitimate low-volume site thereby overloading the servers on the low-volume site.</li></ol>

<p>Because of the point-to-point (user-to-website) nature of the attack, to do something that constitutes “taking over the entire web” is infeasible by a longshot.</p>

<p>The bottom line analysis for the effect on risk due to a change in consequences from pre-invention to post-invention: no change, and therefore no impact.</p>

<p><strong>Vulnerabilities</strong><br />These vulnerabilities have existed for years, and there have been workarounds for years. Along with this announcement, new patches were introduced in all major DNS server solutions. It is reasonable to assume that many DNS server implementations have been patched, though public accounts have suggested that number is in the 66%-75% range.</p>

<p>Bottom line analysis: the vulnerability level has been reduced, probably significantly, and the affect is positive for risk reduction. If 100% of DNS servers were patched, then overall risk would be reduced for this attack (assuming that there were actual attacks using this technique in the past.)</p>

<p><strong>Threats</strong><br />The real question regarding risk impact comes in the arena of the less-controllable manipulation of threat. The general threat equation revolves around an attacker’s willingness to attack, based on his/her own cost/benefit analysis that compares the cost to attack to the expected benefits, tempered by the potential for being caught and penalized.</p>

<p>Cost to attack – prior to disclosing the invention, there were likely few, if any attackers with “prior art” that mirrored this technique. It is anybody’s guess how many potential attackers might have figured it out eventually, but they would have had to come from the pool of folks with enough expertise to do so – I am going to guess 500,000 people.</p>

<p>After the disclosure, the hints provided in the press release, the podcast, the sorted stories, and the blog entries made it much easier to figure out. Let’s guess that 5 million people could execute the attack. With automated tools, that number goes up to 50 million.</p>

<p>These numbers are estimates that illustrate the nature of the exercise. You are welcome to fill in your own estimates and come to your own conclusions.</p>

<p>Bottom line analysis: a significant increase in threat and corresponding risk.</p>

<p><strong>Net Effect</strong><br />The risk manager's challenge is to weigh the decrease in vulnerable systems compared with the corresponding increase in threat, within the context of number of incidents and anticipated future incidents. Given the sheer size differential, it is difficult to conceive of a situation where risk is not increased. </p>

<p>Sometimes it &quot;feels&quot; like someone is taking action for the greater good, when that action actually creates a negative impact for all. For example, it is common for people to believe that raising prices of scarce resources during&nbsp; times of trouble (e.g. gasoline in the hurricane Katrina aftermath) is unconscionable even though a majority of economists recognize that raising prices actually provides for the greater public good. Vulnerability discovery and disclosure, and attack inventions, might feel like the right thing to do, but the net result is almost always a negative impact.</p></div>

Their customers have been in fact self-servicing their needs enjoying the modular nature of the kit, the result of which is an unknown number of modified Neosploit kits.<br />
