<br />
Taking into consideration the proprietary nature of some of the kits, the business model of malware kits was mostly relying on their exclusive nature next to the number, and diversity of the exploits included in order to improve the infection rate. This simplistic assumption on behalf of the coders totally <a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=1598">ignored the possibility of their kits leaking to the general public</a>, or copies of the kits ending up as a bargain in particular underground deal where the once highly exclusive kit was offered as a bonus.<br />
<br />
"Me too" web malware kits were a faddish way to enjoy the popularity of web malware kits like MPack and Icepack and try to cash in on that popularity by coming up average kits lacking any significant differentiation factors in the process. But just like the original and proprietary kits, whose authors didn't envision the long term growth strategy of integrating different services into their propositions or the kits themselves, the authors of copycat malware kits didn't bother considering the lack of long-term growth strategy for their releases. Branding in respect to releasing a Firepack malware kit to compete with Icepack which was originally released to compete with Mpack, has failed to achieve the desired results as well.<br />
<br />
And with malware kits now a commodity, and underground vendors excelling in a particular practice with the long term objective to vertically integrate in their area of expertise -- think spammers offering localization of messages into different languages and segmented email databases from a specific country -- would we witness the emergence of <a href="http://ddanchev.blogspot.com/2008/08/76service-cybercrime-as-service-going.html">managed cybercrime services</a> charging a premium for providing fresh dumps of credit card numbers, PayPal, Ebay accounts or whatever the buyer is requesting?<br />
<br />
That may well be the case in the long term.<br />

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In <a title="The Magical ATM Card and SMS Message in Thailand" rel="bookmark" href="http://www.thecepblog.com/2008/08/03/the-magical-atm-card-and-sms-message-in-thailand/"><span style="color: #105cb6;">The Magical ATM Card and SMS Message in Thailand</span></a> we talked about booking flights and securely paying using a SMS PayCode and ATM transfer, avoiding the possibility of on-line credit card fraud; and in <a title="Keyloggers: Why Banks Need Two-Factor Authentication" rel="bookmark" href="http://www.thecepblog.com/2008/01/14/keyloggers-why-banks-need-two-factor-authentication/"><span style="color: #105cb6;">Keyloggers: Why Banks Need Two-Factor Authentication</span></a> I described how <a href="http://www.kasikornbank.com/portal/site/KBank/?" target="_blank">KBank</a> uses SMS-based one-time-passwords (OTP) to authenticate transactions.   </p>
<p>In addition to the above services, KBank offers a service that permits users to receive an SMS message that details any change in account balance and/or point-of-sale (POS) transaction with your debit card.   I really like this service and the feeling of security knowing when, where and by how much my balance changes or my debit card is used in a transaction.    The KBank POS SMS notification is so fast that when I present my card to a merchant I normally receive an SMS message detailing the transaction before the merchant returns for my signature.  (There is an unfortunate lag in the balance change notification that can run minutes to hours behind real-time, but the POS VISA debit card notification is real-time).</p>
<p>As the story goes,  I should have been using my KBank card and account a few weeks ago and not my US-based VISA debit dard.  Why?</p>
<p>My US-based VISA debit card was cloned sometime on or before August 8th.   I am really careful with this card, so I was surprised the magnetic strip was cloned at a POS merchant.   The fraudster made 7 fraudulent transactions beginning on August 8th for a total of around $2500 USD, mostly on August 11th, before I discovered the fraudulent transactions viewing my account on-line.</p>
<p>This would not have happened with KBank SMS-based transaction notification services.</p>
<p>The first transaction with my cloned VISA debit card was less than $50 USD (I assume the fraudster was &#8220;testing the water&#8221;).   If I was using my KBank card, I would have received an immediate SMS message detailing a POS transaction in Bangkok when I was physically far away from Bangkok in Chiang Mai.   I could have immediately called the bank (or logged in) and blocked the debit card, limiting potential losses to the bank or the merchant to one fraudulent transaction, not seven.</p>
<p>In addition, KBank offers what they call a Web-Shopping VISA card, where you can go into your on-line account (verified by SMS OTP as mentioned) and request a VISA debit card number (with expiration date, CCV etc).   You set the limit from 0 to 500,000 THB (Thai Baht) per day; and you can login to your account and change this anytime (authenticating your transaction with another SMS-based OTP). You can also block or cancel this number anytime and apply for another one.</p>
<p>I am amazed that in Thailand I receive much better anti-fraud prevention and detection services than with banks in the US.   I know of no bank or brokerage in the US that offers the same quality of service and security as KBank in Thailand.  </p>

<blockquote><p>Of course, if you&#8217;re broke and have no access to credit you don&#8217;t have much choice but to be frugal, but is that all that&#8217;s going on here? Or are consumers tired of being pressured to take on massive debt in order to &#8220;super size&#8221; and &#8220;bling&#8221; everything? What do you think? Is credit card consumerism over?</p></blockquote>
<p>I doubt consumerism is over entirely, but a slowdown seems inevitable in light of our current gloomy economic situation. What does this all mean for IT Security? Well, all the credit accounts are still out there, so there&#8217;s still plenty of information that is available to be exploited.</p>
<p>But will consumers&#8217; hesitance to go into debt also make them more watchful for ID Theft and other fraud-related crime, and more afraid of hackers online? In other words, is it possible the economic slowdown may also make people more hesitant to use technology for their commerce, and encourage them to check their bank accounts more regularly and thoroughly for fraud, and to make them altogether more cautious about IT Security? Cybercriminals attempting to scam other cybercriminals has been happening for years, with old school cases where backdoored malware tools such as crypters and binders are offered for free, or a newly released RAT whose client is in fact infected with a third-party malware. Realizing and definitely not enjoying the fact that the lowered entry barriers into cybercrime are empowering yesterday's script kiddies will malware kits that used to be utilized by a set of people who invested time and money into the process several years ago, this unethical competitive practice is only going to get more common. Backdooring phishing pages is one thing, <a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=1641">backdooring entire web malware exploitation kits, next to the possibility to remotely exploit a competitor's command and control server is entirely another</a> : <br />

"<i>Taking a more strategic approach, a cybercriminal wanting to scam another cybercriminal would backdoor <a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=1598" title="The Neosploit cybercrime group abandons its web malware exploitation kit">a highly expensive web malware exploitation kit</a>, then start distributing it for free, and in fact, there have been numerous cases when such kits have been distributed in such a fraudulent manner. Why just backdoor the phishing page, when you can embedd it with a live exploit URL in an attempt to both, infect the cybercriminal about to use and obtain all of the already stolen virtual assets has has already stolen, and also, <a href="http://ddanchev.blogspot.com/2008/05/skype-phishing-pages-serving-exploits.html">have a third-party maintain a blended attack campaign without even knowing it</a>.<br />

And those who look, usually end up finding.<br />

The result? <a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=1598">Cybercrime groups filing for bankruptcy unable to achieve a positive return on investment</a> due to their intellectual property getting pirated and their inability to enforce the licenses that they issue to their customers.<br />
<br />
We're definitely going to see more trivial, but then again, remotely exploitable vulnerabilities within popular crimeware kits, which can assist both the cybercrime analysts and naturally the cybercriminals themselves. For the time being, even the most sophisticated malware campaigns aren't fully taking advantage of the evasive and stealth tactics that the kits, or their common sense allows them to - let's see for how long.<br />

Increasingly, these "vendors" are starting to "vertically integrate", namely, start diversifying the portfolio of services they offer in order to steal market share from other "vendors" offering related services like, email database cleaning, segmentation of email databases, email servers or botnets whose hosts have a pre-checked and relatively clean IP reputation, namely they're not blacklisted yet.<br />
<br />
How much does it cost to send 1 million spam emails these days? According to a random spamming service, $100 excluding the discounts based on the speed of sending desired, namely 10-20 per second or 20-30 per second. Let's dissect the service, and emphasize on its key differentiation factors, as well as the customerization offered in the form of a dedicated server if the customer would like to send billions of emails :<br />

What they're actually trying to say is due to AOL's use of Domain Keys Identified Mail (DKIM). As far as <a href="http://ddanchev.blogspot.com/2008/05/segmenting-and-localizing-spam.html">localization of the spam to the email owner's native languag</a>e is concerned, this segmentation concept has been take place for over an year now.<br />

This leaves a countless number of opportunities for targeted spamming, and yes, spear phishing attacks made possible due to the segmentation of the emails based on a country, city, even company.<br />
<br />
In the long term, the people behind spamming providers, web malware exploitation kits and <a href="http://ddanchev.blogspot.com/2008/05/diy-phishing-kits-introducing-new.html">DIY phishing kits</a>, will inevitably start introducing built-in features which were once available through third-party services. For instance, hosting infrastructure for the spam/phishing/live exploit URLs, or even managed fast-flux infrastructure, have the potential to become widely available if such optional features get built-in phishing kits, or start getting offered by the spamming provider itself. And since the affiliate based model seems to be working just fine, the <a href="http://ddanchev.blogspot.com/2007/12/phishers-spammers-and-malware-authors.html">ongoing underground consolidation</a> will converge providers of different underground goods and services, where everyone would be driving customers to one another's services and earning revenue in the process.<div class="feedflare">

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In a case that will have profound implications, the European Court of Human Rights has issued a <a href="http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rja14/Papers/echr-finland.pdf">judgment</a> against Finland in a medical privacy case.</p>
<p>The complainant was a nurse at a Finnish hospital, and also HIV-positive. Word of her condition spread among colleagues, and her contract was not renewed. The hospital&#8217;s access controls were not sufficient to prevent colleages accessing her record, and its audit trail was not sufficient to determine who had compromised her privacy. The court&#8217;s view was  that health care staff who are not involved in the care of a patient must be unable to access that patient’s electronic medical record: &#8220;What is required in this connection is practical and effective protection to exclude any possibility of unauthorised access occurring in the first place.&#8221; (Press coverage <a href="http://www.helsinkitimes.fi/htimes/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=2156%3Aechr-finds-finland-in-breach-of-patient-confidentiality&amp;catid=33%3Ageneral&amp;Itemid=158">here</a>.)</p>
<p>A &#8220;practical and effective&#8221; protection test in European law will bind engineering, law and policy much more tightly together. And it will have wide consequences. Privacy compaigners, for example, can now argue strongly that the NHS Care Records service is illegal. And what will be the further consequences for the Transformational Government initiative - the &#8220;Database State&#8221;?</p>

      <title><![CDATA[Metrics for security and performance in low-latency anonymity systems]]></title>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In <a href="https://www.torproject.org/">Tor</a>, and in other similar anonymity systems, clients choose a random sequence of computers (nodes) to route their connections through. The intention is that, unless someone is watching the whole network at the same time, the tracks of each user&#8217;s communication will become hidden amongst that of others. Exactly how a client chooses nodes varies between system to system, and is important for security.</p>
<p>If someone is simultaneously watching a user&#8217;s traffic as it enters and leaves the network, it is possible to de-anonymise the communication. This could occur if the first and last node for a connection is controlled by the same person. Tor takes some steps to avoid this possibility e.g. no two computers on the same /16 network may be chosen for each connection. However, someone with access to several networks could circumvent this measure.</p>
<p>Not only is route selection critical for security, but it&#8217;s also a significant performance factor. Tor nodes vary dramatically in their capacity, mainly due to their network connections. If all nodes were chosen with equal likelihood, the slower ones would cripple the network. This is why Tor weights the selection probability for a node proportional to its contribution to the network bandwidth.</p>
<p>Because of the dual importance of route selection, there are a number of proposals which offer an alternative to Tor&#8217;s bandwidth-weighted algorithm. Later this week at <a href="http://petsymposium.org/2008/">PETS</a> I&#8217;ll be presenting my paper, co-authored with <a href="http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rnw24">Robert N.M. Watson</a>, &#8220;<a href="http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~sjm217/papers/pets08metrics.pdf">Metrics for security and performance in low-latency anonymity systems</a>&#8221;.  In this paper, we examine several route selection algorithms and evaluate their security and performance.</p>
<p>Intuitively, a route selection algorithm which weights all nodes equally appears the most secure because an attacker can&#8217;t make their node count any more than the others. This has been formalized by two measures: <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gini_coefficient">Gini coefficient</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_entropy">entropy</a>. In fact the reality is more complex &#8212; uniform node selection resists attackers with lots of bandwidth, whereas bandwidth-weighting is better against attackers with lots of nodes.</p>
<p>Our paper explores the probability of path compromise of different route selection algorithms, when under attack by a range of different adversaries. We find that none of the proposals are optimal against all adversaries, and so summarizing effective security in terms of a single figure is not feasible. We also model the performance of the schemes and show that bandwidth-weighting offers both low latency and high resistance to attack by bandwidth-constrained adversaries.</p>

      <title><![CDATA[TrueCrypt's Deniable File System]]></title>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[Together with Tadayoshi Kohno, Steve Gribble, and three of their students at the University of Washington, I have  a <a href="http://www.schneier.com/paper-truecrypt-dfs.html">new paper</a> that breaks the deniable encryption feature of TrueCrypt version 5.1a.  Basically, modern operating systems leak information like mad, making deniability a very difficult requirement to satisfy.

<blockquote><b>ABSTRACT:</b>  We examine the security requirements for creating a Deniable File System (DFS), and the efficacy with which the TrueCrypt disk-encryption software meets those requirements. We find that the Windows Vista operating system itself, Microsoft Word, and Google Desktop all compromise the deniability of a TrueCrypt DFS. While staged in the context of TrueCrypt, our research highlights several fundamental challenges to the creation and use of any DFS: even when the file system may be deniable in the pure, mathematical sense, we find that the environment surrounding that file system can undermine its deniability, as well as its contents. Finally, we suggest approaches for overcoming these challenges on modern operating systems like Windows.</blockquote>

The students did most of the actual work.  I helped with the basic ideas, and contributed the threat model.  Deniability is a very hard feature to achieve.

<blockquote>There are several threat models against which a DFS could potentially be secure:

<ul><li>One-Time Access. The attacker has a single snapshot of the disk image. An example would be when the secret police seize Alice’s computer.
<li>Intermittent Access. The attacker has several snapshots of the disk image, taken at different times. An example would be border guards who make a copy of Alice’s hard drive every time she enters or leaves the country.
<li>Regular Access. The attacker has many snapshots of the disk image, taken in short intervals. An example would be if the secret police break into Alice’s apartment every day when she is away, and make a copy of the disk each time.</ul></blockquote>

Since we wrote our paper, TrueCrypt released version 6.0 of its software, which <a href="http://www.truecrypt.org/docs/?s=hidden-operating-system">claims<a/> <a href="http://www.truecrypt.org/docs/?s=hidden-volume-precautions">to</a> have addressed many of the issues we've uncovered.  In the paper, we said:

<blockquote>We analyzed the most current version of TrueCrypt available at the writing of the paper, version 5.1a. We shared a draft of our paper with the TrueCrypt development team in May 2008. TrueCrypt version 6.0 was released in July 2008. We have not analyzed version 6.0, but observe that TrueCrypt v6.0 does take new steps to improve TrueCrypt’s deniability properties (e.g., via the  creation of deniable operating systems, which we also recommend in Section 5). We suggest that the breadth of our results for TrueCrypt v5.1a highlight the challenges to creating deniable file systems. Given these potential challenges, we encourage the users not to blindly trust the deniability of such systems. Rather, we encourage further research evaluating the deniability of such systems, as well as research on new yet light-weight methods for improving deniability.</blockquote>

So we cannot break  the deniability feature in TrueCrypt 6.0.  But, honestly, I wouldn't trust it.

There have been two <a href="http://www.darkreading.com/document.asp?doc_id=159192&WT.svl=news2_1">news</a> <a href="http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/148513/data_can_leak_from_partially_encrypted_disks.html">articles</a> (and a SlashDot <a href="http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/07/17/2043248">thread</a>) about the paper.

One talks about a generalization to encrypted partitions.  If you don't encrypt the entire drive, there is the possibility -- and it seems very probable -- that information about the encrypted partition will leak onto the unencrypted rest of the drive.  Whole disk encryption is the smartest option.
