      <content:encoded><![CDATA[I was delighted to see the <a href="http://www.heraldstandard.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=20151834&BRD=2280&PAG=461&dept_id=480247&rfi=6">Herald Standard </a>quoting an executive/close protection agent regarding the importance of Advance work.<br /><span id="fullpost"><br />Sy Alli is an E.P./C.P. team leader for "Limited Brands Inc.," and was speaking at the California University of Pennsylvania's 2nd annual conference on Corporate and Homeland Security.<br /><br />Mr. Alli was describing a previous trip to Indonesia where he was in charge of the advance to make sure everything was in place before the Principal arrived out with the other protective agents.  Very accurately, he described the need to cover every minute detail from the routes of travel to the alternative routes and to include such important features as local hospitals should medical treatment be needed.<br /><br />Another important point highlighted was the need for agents to have access to contacts in different countries who could assist with logistics, general and specialized support on the ground, current political situations, etc.  <br /><br />Far too often I am approached by security persons (and not even all are qualified/trained in executive or close protection)who find out that we may have overseas work and want to be included.  On some occassions, those requesting to be included on the detail did not even have a current passport!<br /><br />If you are serious about making a career out of this line of work, you owe it to yourself to do your homework.  Over the years I have developed hundreds of contacts all over the world who will respond immediately and who can be trusted to support us in any number of situations and scenarios.  <br /><br />This took a lot of preparing and involved constant contact.  It is not something that you throw together a day before your client is scheduled to arrive in a country.  If you have people in different parts of the country, or world if you wish to work globally, who can assist when you are in need, you will be able to facilitate your client in a way that will not only gain his/her admiration, but will undoubtedly cement your position in that client's security detail.<br /><br />In these unsure times, there is a lot to be said for knowing your job is safe for the foreseeable future.<div class="blogger-post-footer">Visit Sexton Executive Security at www.sextonsecurity.com</div>]]></content:encoded>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://wifinetnews.com/images/plane.jpg" align="right" border="0" hspace="5" /><a href="http://www.smh.com.au/news/travel/qantas-limits-access-to-web/2008/09/17/1221330929870.html"><strong>Qantas backs off from earlier plans, changes provider for in-flight broadband:</strong></a> The Sydney Morning Herald somewhat erratically and incompletely reports that Qantas has delayed and modified its in-flight broadband plans. Aeromobile was the provider when the service <a href="http://www.breakingtravelnews.com/article.php?story=2007081609481129&query=qantas"><strong>was tested in second quarter 2007</strong></a>, but OnAir is now described as the airline's partner. This was noted by colleague Fabio Zambelli, who emailed me the news, and <a href="http://www.setteb.it/content/view/4742"><strong>has his own account</strong></a> at 7BIT (in Italian).</p>

<p><a href="http://www.onair.aero/index.php?pid=123"><strong>OnAir</strong></a> has so far tested their calling/texting-only service on two aircraft--one operated by Air France, one by TAP Portugal--even though RyanAir announced plans that its planes would started being unwired with the service by late 2007. Still no word on that fleet progress.</p>

<p>Qantas will apparently launch cached Web browsing and limited Web email (probably through a proxy) along with instant messaging, with full Internet service coming "later in 2009." This is clearly due to a lack of satellite coverage that was just remediated a few weeks ago (see below). The first plane with limited service, a new A380, should be in flight 20-October-2008.</p>

<div style="float:right; margin:0px; padding-left: 10px; padding-bottom: 0px;"><p><img src="http://wifinetnews.com//images/2008/SorryQantas.jpg" alt="SorryQantas.jpg" border="0" width="100" height="152"></p><p style="font-size: 10px">I hate in-flight<br/>broadband</p></div>To Qantas' credit, note that each seat on the plane will have a laptop opower socket, a USB port, and a multimedia system that can show 100 movies and 500 TV show episodes, play the contents of 1,000 CDs and 20 radio stations, and offer 80 games. 

<p>The Morning Herald seems to overstate the importance and scope of a complaint filed by the union representing American Airlines' flight attendants. The detailed coverage in the U.S. had more to do with the potential for issues, and likely attendants lack of interest in policing yet another media on the plane. Filtering doesn't work, the attendants probably already know, and this may just be a negotiating point with the airline.</p>

<p>On why Qantas is waiting until late 2009? This requires unwinding how OnAir gets its signal.</p>

<p>Aeromobile and OnAir both rely on Inmarsat satellites for their service. Both companies had several years ago staked their futures on the fourth-generation network Inmarsat was to inaugurate with three satellites that would use beamforming to allow precise delivery of nearly 500 Kbps per receiver, with hundreds or thousands of regions being able to be targeted from a single satellite. Inmarsat's third-gen network--don't confuse this with 3G cellular ground-based networks--can deliver about 64 Kbps per channel.</p>

<p>Now, unfortunately, Inmarsat was three years late on launching its trans-Pacific bird. While the company <a href="http://www.inmarsat.com/About/Newsroom/Press/00021465.aspx?language=EN&textonly=False"><strong>claims 85 percent coverage of the earth</strong></a> and 98 percent coverage of population, there's a big gap over the Pacific that also prevents them from having good overlap between the U.S. and Japan/China/Korea, as well as the southern Pacific, covering Australia. Since the biggest market for long-haul flights would likely be Australia, Japan, and China, traveling trans-Pacific or trans-hemispheric routes, that gap is rather large.</p>

<p>Aeromobile opted to build out a service, deployed only by Emirates airline as far as I can tell, that uses the 3G service since it was available, and most necessary equipment is already installed on most over-water planes. OnAir was waiting for 4G, which has necessitated a long wait, but allowed them to launch in Europe with a seemingly next-generation service. Given that OnAir is controlled by an airline-owned integration firm, SITA, and by Airbus, they're not going anywhere.</p>

<p>Inmarsat finally <a href="http://spaceflightnow.com/proton/i4f3/"><strong>lofted its third satellite on Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan</strong></a> on 19-August-2008, and the launch and separation was reported as successful. Previously, the company has needed up to a year to verify and deploy its 4G satellites. (You can <a href="http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=12380.105"><strong>read extremely close coverage of the launch</strong></a> at a Web site devoted to space enthusiasm.)</p>

<p>However, the dirty little secret about Inmarsat's BGAN is that it costs a fortune to heft bandwidth across it. Thus, in-flight broadband over BGAN, if it's ever available, is going to be changed on an extremely high per-MB rate. None of the providers want to say this. This is in contrast to Row 44 (and, once, Connexion by Boeing), which relies on leased Ku-band transponders where they can fix costs and they require high volumes to keep per-bit costs efffectively low.</p>

<p>OnAir's launch of calling on Air France's service involves paying a few euros per minute for calls, which might help you understand what data costs could ultimately run.</p>]]></content:encoded>

The software can also share a cell connection via Bluetooth or USB. The software costs $30 or &euro;20, and requires Internet (Connection) Sharing (ICS), which some providers may have removed from your phone. (The company set the price at US$30 before the euro drop, so is offering a kind of discount over their real &euro;20 price for the moment.)</p>

<p><a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/11/technology/personaltech/11smart.html?_r=1&8cir&emc=cirb1&oref=slogin"><strong>The New York Times rounds up using cell phones as hotspots:</strong></a> Though the reporter, Bob Tedeschi, mentions the issue of having to have an unlimited data plan to avoid unpleasant charges, and worries about bad drains and malicious users, he doesn't note that many carriers don't allow this kind of sharing or routing without a separate "tethering" plan, that can run $20 or more per month. Also, U.S. carriers have now all imposed a 5 GB per month reasonable use cap; some will cut you off, some charge you more, some cancel your service based on exceeding this use.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.networkworld.com/news/2008/090908-ieee-considers-gigabit.html?hpg1=bn"><strong>Gigabit Wi-Fi? Someday:</strong></a> TechWorld considers the IEEE's Very High Throughput (VHT) study group, which wants to start work on 1 Gbps or faster Wi-Fi standard for completion in 2012. With 802.11n offering raw symbol rates up to 600 Mbps--even though no devices have shipped with the radios and antennas to offer that optional high speed yet--there's interest in other frequencies that would allow faster encodings, as well as aggregating multiple links to achieve high speed rates. My experience in testing and using 2.4 GHz with Draft N would show that wide or aggregated channels doesn't work very well. The article's writer, Peter Judge, notes that ultrawideband had potential (over short distances) to approach the gigabit mark, but that UWB hasn't really reached the market in any substantive way years after it was promised to be a big technology.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.nbc5i.com/news/17435300/detail.html"><strong>Flight attendants express concerns about in-flight broadband porn:</strong></a> When I've spoken to airlines, industry experts, and service providers, I find that they all have stories about how porn is viewed on computers, through DVD players, and in convenient magazine form on planes today. Adding the Internet may provide new salacious imagery, but the problem predates Internet access, and filtering Internet service is never as good a solution as a social one. Someone idiotic enough to view porn on a plane over the Internet is also stupid enough to bring along inappropriate DVDs they watch while seated next to children. Flight attendants already have the power vested in them to take care of this. The flight attendants for American might be expressing this concern as part of a bargaining issue, where their responsibilities but not commensurate pay have increased.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.kxly.com/Global/story.asp?S=8989329"><strong>Spokane ends free Wi-Fi:</strong></a> Remember Vivato? Boy, I sure do. A company with a reach far exceeding its grasp, Vivato initially powered Spokane's downtown network. The network has continued to run on some basis--I'm not sure using what equipment--and now will move from free to fee. OneEighty Networks will charge about $10 per month to cover the costs of the network, for which local businesses at one point chipped in.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.onair.aero/"><strong>Brazilian TAM airline signs up for in-flight calling, messaging:</strong></a> OnAir has signed up the Brazilian carrier TAM, which will deploy the service on its Airbus A320 craft. Brazil hasn't yet provided regulatory approval, so no launch date is noted. TAM is the largest domestic and international carrier for Brazil.</p>]]></content:encoded>

      <title><![CDATA[CEP is Not BPM, BAM, BRE, BRMS or SOA]]></title>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A post in  <a href="http://www.thecepblog.com/wp-admin/viewtopic.php?f=13&amp;t=123&amp;start=0&amp;st=0&amp;sk=t&amp;sd=d">Technology content of current CEP products?</a> reminds me of why I rarely, if ever, agree with anything that comes out of Aleri&#8217;s marketing team.   To fair to Jeff, it is not only Aleri but others, who continually misdefine business process management (BPM) as CEP.</p>
<p>Jeff uses the example, &#8220;Smart Order Routing&#8221; as an example of taking an event and routing the resulting market order match based on some simple rules.    Routing a order kicked off by a simple order match against a deep liquidity pool (or other market factor) does not define complex event processing nor detecting a complex event - the core idea behind CEP.   Order routing based on simple rules is BPM, plain and simple.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s take another example, fraud.  In this example, there is some complex neural network monitoring for credit card fraud and a potential fraud is detected - this is CEP, detecting a complex event based on some sophisticated analytics.   </p>
<p>After a possible fraud has been detected, a process looks into a database and the routes the incident to someone in the company who is a (1) specialist in credit card fraud, (2) working at the same time of the discovered threat, and (3) immediately available to act on this type of task.   Routing the incident is not CEP, it is BPM.</p>
<p>Jeff makes the argument that it is OK to call an event-driven BPM task CEP because &#8220;it fits the EPTS definition&#8221; in the CEP glossary.   He also avoids the discussion of detection accuracy, and instead insists that latency is a &#8221;very important&#8221; factor in a CEP application.</p>
<p>If you read the various post by vendors in the blog-o-sphere, it is obvious that they are continually defining CEP as BAM, BPM, BRE, BRMS, SOA and just about every other related processing activity that is complimentary to the <a href="http://www.thecepblog.com/2008/08/26/magic-quadrant-for-it-event-correlation-and-analysis-2007/" target="_self">event correlation and analysis </a>required to detect an opportunity or threat to your business.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m not picking on Aleri.  TIBCO has been doing the same thing recently in their <a href="http://tibcoblogs.com/cep" target="_blank">CEP blog</a>, continually attempting to redefine CEP as BRMS.    Detecting business opportunities and threats with high confidence requires sophisticated analytics, and their tools have not yet evolved to &#8220;real CEP&#8221; capabilities.  Instead, vendors are attempting to redefine BPM, BRMS, BRE, and even SOA to some degree, as CEP. </p>
<p>CEP is Not BPM, BAM, BRE, BRMS or SOA.</p>

These aircraft ply routes between New York's JFK and three cities: San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Miami. Service is $13 per flight, and bandwidth is expected to be 1.5 Mbps (uncompressed) upstream and downstream, although the service provider, Aircell, claims some advantages above that.</p>

<p>This is a big day for Aircell, which spent tens of millions to acquire the exclusive spectrum license that allows them to shoot Mbps to and from planes. My big question will be whether coverage remains seamless across an entire flight--how often one has to reconnect their VPN would be a big issue. If Aircell has architected the network correctly, passengers should never be reassigned an IP address, and connections shouldn't be dropped even if there's a hiccup in air-to-ground communication.</p>

<p>I've covered in-flight broadband for several years, and I've been wondering lately whether we'd be waiting until 2009 to see real production service. American is calling this a 3-to-6 month pilot to see what their passengers think. Just yesterday, I <strong><a href="http://wifinetnews.com/archives/008422.html">wrote up</a></strong> veteran travel writer Joe Brancatelli's frustration with the lack of information and some misinformation about in-flight broadband.</p>

      <title><![CDATA[Delta Opts for Broadband Fleet Deployment]]></title>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://wifinetnews.com/images/plane.jpg" align="right" border="0" hspace="5" /><a href="http://news.delta.com/article_display.cfm?article_id=11127"><strong>Delta Airlines says they'll put Internet access on every plane:</strong></a> Delta is the first major U.S. airline to take the full-on plunge into fleet in-flight broadband service. The company said that it will equip 330 planes by 2009, starting with 130 MD craft this year, with Aircell's service. The Gogo Internet offering costs $10 for flights up to 3 hours and $13 for longer flights. </p>

<p>Delta's competitors with broadband interest, like Alaska, Southwest, and American, each have a different plan of attack. Alaska will test service soon with Row 44, which uses Ku-band satellite access, albeit with higher speeds and far lower costs, the company says, than Boeing's doomed Connexion service. Row 44 touts their over-water ability, critical for Alaska, which flies plenty of routes to the great northern state and to Mexico. A test is what's scheduled; not deployment. </p>

<p>Southwest <a href="http://www.row44.com/news?u=southwest-chooses-row-44"><strong>did some deal with Row 44</strong></a>, but nothing further has been forthcoming. Summer's almost over, and we haven't heard more about the "four aircraft" mentioned in the linked press release.</p>

<p>American has the most fully formed plan, but they, too, are testing Aircell's service, and will shortly launch service on 15 trans-continental 767-200s, flying largely routes among SFO, LAX, JFK, and Miami. The company said in the past that they would decide on fleet deployment after the pilot stage.</p>

<p>I shouldn't forget Virgin America, which planned Internet access as part of a set of already-deployed in-flight networked services, but they have under a couple dozen planes at the moment, so they're not a real competitor except on a few routes. Their launch date hasn't been set.</p>

<p>Delta's announcement makes it clear that air-Fi is coming soon, and will likely change how business travelers plan trips. If you can get productive work done during a flight, that changes the financial equation of the trip's cost, and your time out of the office.       <content:encoded><![CDATA[The fact that we're running out of IPv4 addresses is reasonably well-known by now, but it's not the only declining network resource on the Internet. 'AS' or Autonomous System numbers, which uniquely identify networks for the Internet's BGP routing infrastructure, are also running out, and on a similar timeline. AS numbers, like IP addresses, are allocated by RIRs (Regional Internet Registries) and the last one, based on current trends, will be gone in early 2011.

As <a href="http://www.apnic.net/news/2008/0725.html">this release from APNIC (the Asia Pacific Network Information Centre, the RIR for the far east) explains</a>, the old AS numbers were 16-bits. A new standard exists for 32-bit AS numbers and, as of January 1, 2009 these 32-bit numbers will be the ones allocated by default, unless a 16-bit number is specifically requested.

But routers and network management software on networks using the new numbers need to be updated. Surprisingly, and impressively, routers on older, 16-bit AS-numbered routes can still communicate with the new 32-bit AS-numbered networks, and vice-versa. <a href="http://wiki.icons.apnic.net/display/ASN/Operational+Implications">Click here for more on how they accomplished this neat bit of backward-compatibility.</a><br style="clear: both;"/>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong><a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/28/nyregion/28network.html?partner=rssuserland&emc=rss">I'm going for the sensational in the headline, but it's part of the story's intro, too:</a></strong> The New York Times reports on some early uses of the city's $500m wireless network designed for non-public uses. The network uses UMTS over licensed spectrum specifically devoted the city's municipal and public safety purposes. </p>

<p>One of the projects leaders uses terms that should warm every New Yorker's heart, if he or she knew what they meant. IT head Paul Cosgrave says the system will overcome silos, an often disparaging term for the separation of resources across groups that can only expensively be overcome. It's the government and business equivalent of the academic problem of a lack of cross-discipline focus.</p>

<p>One of the first applications allows sanitation workforce managers a frighteningly precise amount of knowledge about routes, activities, and behavior of trucks in their territory. Let's hope that's not misused! Efficiency is one thing; micro-management is another.</p>

<p>Another project is testing wireless water-meter reading. The city hopes to spend $90 per meter for the upgrade and shed part of a $12.2m contract with Con Edison that covers 850,000 units. What should be useful about this is that problems can be detected by monitoring waterflow patterns, which in turn allows the often huge problems that take months to notice (occurring underground or in basements where rivers formerly flowed) to be stopped before they turn into multi-million-dollar problems for property owners or the city. Anytime anything happens in Manhattan, it's a multi-million dollar problem.<br />

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://wifinetnews.com/images/plane.jpg" align="right" hspace="5" height="80" width="80" border="0" /><strong><a href="http://www.boingboing.net/2008/06/24/american-airlines-wi.html">American Airlines will fly its first commercial round-trip with Aircell's Gogo service active tomorrow:</a></strong> On Wednesday, 25-June-2008, in-flight broadband briefly flickers back to life with a JFK to Los Angeles round-trip flown by American on which passengers will get free use of the onboard, in-flight Internet service via Wi-Fi. The test flight is a kind of soft launch, which will be followed in a few weeks by full-on service. </p>

<p>American will offer Gogo on its 15 Boeing 767-200s, which means all JFK-LAX routes and some JFK-SFO and JFK-MIA (Miami) routes. The test will likely stress the system because more people will get on than on a typical flight since they won't be paying, and I would guess a lot of people will immediately try streaming video just to see if it works.</p>

<p>The full-on launch is still a pilot project even though it involves so many planes, routes, and passengers.</p>

<p>BoingBoing's Xeni Jardin asked me to participate in an interview call today with execs from Aircell and American Airlines, and I've written up <strong><a href="http://www.boingboing.net/2008/06/24/american-airlines-wi.html">the full account</a></strong> for their site.</p>

<p>Among other interesting tidbits I learned today, the onboard systems have 800 GB of capacity for future expansion--streaming media, most likely--and the AA-configured 767-200 has power outlets scattered around coach, and at every seat in first and business class.</p>]]></content:encoded>
