NIST is holding a competition to replace the SHA family of hash functions, which have been increasingly under attack. (I wrote about an early NIST hash workshop here.)

Skein is our submission (myself and seven others: Niels Ferguson, Stefan Lucks, Doug Whiting, Mihir Bellare, Tadayoshi Kohno, Jon Callas, and Jesse Walker). Here's the paper:

Executive Summary

Skein is a new family of cryptographic hash functions. Its design combines speed, security, simplicity, and a great deal of flexibility in a modular package that is easy to analyze.

Skein is fast. Skein-512 -- our primary proposal -- hashes data at 6.1 clock cycles per byte on a 64-bit CPU. This means that on a 3.1 GHz x64 Core 2 Duo CPU, Skein hashes data at 500 MBytes/second per core -- almost twice as fast as SHA-512 and three times faster than SHA-256. An optional hash-tree mode speeds up parallelizable implementations even more. Skein is fast for short messages, too; Skein-512 hashes short messages in about 1000 clock cycles.

Skein is secure. Its conservative design is based on the Threefish block cipher. Our current best attack on Threefish-512 is on 25 of 72 rounds, for a safety factor of 2.9. For comparison, at a similar stage in the standardization process, the AES encryption algorithm had an attack on 6 of 10 rounds, for a safety factor of only 1.7. Additionally, Skein has a number of provably secure properties, greatly increasing confidence in the algorithm.

Skein is simple. Using only three primitive operations, the Skein compression function can be easily understood and remembered. The rest of the algorithm is a straightforward iteration of this function.

Skein is flexible. Skein is defined for three different internal state sizes -- 256 bits, 512 bits, and 1024 bits -- and any output size. This allows Skein to be a drop-in replacement for the entire SHA family of hash functions. A completely optional and extendable argument system makes Skein an efficient tool to use for a very large number of functions: a PRNG, a stream cipher, a key derivation function, authentication without the overhead of HMAC, and a personalization capability. All these features can be implemented with very low overhead. Together with the Threefish large-block cipher at Skein core, this design provides a full set of symmetric cryptographic primitives suitable for most modern applications.

Skein is efficient on a variety of platforms, both hardware and software. Skein-512 can be implemented in about 200 bytes of state. Small devices, such as 8-bit smart cards, can implement Skein-256 using about 100 bytes of memory. Larger devices can implement the larger versions of Skein to achieve faster speeds.

Skein was designed by a team of highly experienced cryptographic experts from academia and industry, with expertise in cryptography, security analysis, software, chip design, and implementation of real-world cryptographic systems. This breadth of knowledge allowed them to create a balanced design that works well in all environments.

Here's source code, text vectors, and the like for Skein. Watch the Skein website for any updates -- new code, new results, new implementations, the proofs.

NIST's deadline is Friday. It seems as if everyone -- including many amateurs -- is working on a hash function, and I predict that NIST will receive at least 80 submissions. (Compare this to the 21 submissions NIST received -- five were rejected as not being complete -- for the AES competition in 1998.) I expect people to start posting their submissions over the weekend. (Ron Rivest already presented MD6 at Crypto in August.) Probably the best place to watch for new hash functions is here; I'll try to keep a listing of the submissions myself.

The selection process will take around four years. I've previously called this sort of thing a cryptographic demolition derby -- last one left standing wins -- but that's only half true. Certainly all the groups will spend the next couple of years trying to cryptanalyze each other, but in the end there will be a bunch of unbroken algorithms; NIST will select one based on performance and features.

NIST has stated that the goal of this process is not to choose the best standard but to choose a good standard. I think that's smart of them; in this process, "best" is the enemy of "good." My advice is this: immediately sort them based on performance and features. Ask the cryptographic community to focus its attention on the top dozen, rather than spread its attention across all 80 -- although I also expect that most of the amateur submissions will be rejected by NIST for not being "complete and proper." Otherwise, people will break the easy ones and the better ones will go unanalyzed.

Hopefully, you're more than familiar with CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures), but perhaps you're less familiar with CWE (Common Weaknesses Enumeration). Both are significant efforts, international in scope, and the excellent products of The MITRE Corporation, sponsored by the National Cyber Security Division of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Approximately six months ago I was discussing open redirect vulnerabilities with Steven Christey of MITRE, who mentioned that that CWE entry for open redirects was sparse and dated, with little reference material. In particular, he pointed out the lack of defining papers. I accepted this information as a challenge and produced an article that was published in (IN)SECURE Issue 17. Soon after Issue 17 went live, I also took note of an excellent academic paper specific to the topic of open redirect vulnerabilities; Shue, Kalafut and Gupta's Exploitable Redirects on the Web: Identification, Prevalence, and Defense. Complete with these two papers as references, as well as two current CVE identifiers for popular web applications suffering from open redirect vulnerabilities (discovered by yours truly), CVE-2008-2052 & 2951, CWE-601: URL Redirection to Untrusted Site (aka 'Open Redirect') is now current and complete.
As open redirects are undoubtedly one of my biggest pet peeves, I am pleased to no end. These companies can be public or private and can encompass all technology, media, telecommunications and life sciences industry sectors. Not all the regions have reported winners, but the results are in for Virginia and Maryland and we’re happy to say EM7 customers are very well represented by the ones that made it.

Congratulations to:

Apptix

EM7 at the Merkle NOC

And we must point out that Hughes topped the Maryland Technology Fast 50 list with an astounding growth rate of 138,762% over the past 5 years! Wow, it would be tough for any company in the world to beat that growth rate, but all kudos must go to Hughes and this incredible achievement. I’m sure we’ll see them on the National Technology Fast 500 list coming out soon.

Now I would like to say that without ScienceLogic and EM7 much of this would not have been possible, but of course that statement would be an incredible stretch. What I can say is that our product and our technology has had a profound impact on the operational efficiency for HughesNet, so perhaps you can give us, using a basketball analogy, 12 assists in the game.

Interesting to note, several other award winners are in the midst of product evaluations as we speak. I think that EM7 Meta-Appliances are a strategic weapon within each of these businesses to leverage our technology in interesting ways which create huge organizational value and operational efficiencies.

So to all those companies who have won this year… a BIG congratulations from the bottom of my heart. For our existing customers who made the list this year… keep working hard so you can make it again next year. For ScienceLogic, stay tuned in: We were not quite big enough to make the list last year, however I am very excited about our growth in 2008 and am quietly confident that you will see us on the Virginia Fast 50 list next year!

In asking the question, we had certain assumptions – mainly that most people were currently using VMware – and that the real question here was to gauge how quickly Microsoft Hyper-V adoption was coming along. The results both confirmed what we thought and surprised us.

The Results:

Which hypervisor(s) are you currently using?

72% VMware

17% Using something else

9% Hyper-V and VMware

2% Hyper-V

(based on 46 responses)

So the VMware responses were in line with what we thought, although I’ve seen numbers up to 90% share of the market. And about 10% are at least playing with Hyper-V – pretty good numbers just a few months out from launch. But look at 17% using a hypervisor other than Hyper-V and VMware!

We know from talking with people that several brought up Xen. I have to tell you that other than from media and analysts, we never hear about Xen (Citrix), which is why we didn’t include it in the survey as a specific selection. Perhaps it took the introduction of Hyper-V, with the attendant marketing juggernaut, to break people of the VMware-only habit. Xen couldn’t really carry that “heterogeneous” hypervisor environment message on its own, but now that Hyper-V is available, the genie’s out of the bottle. Bears watching.

On another note: We were more successful in hanging onto our marbles on day two – people seemed more in tune to the poll and less focused on collecting giveaways than on day one! [Note: no attendees were irrevocably harmed during the execution of the polls. :)] At Interop Vegas, May 17 – 19, 2009, we’ll be about a year out from Microsoft launching Hyper-V and will make sure to ask the same question then to track changes in hypervisor adoption.

A pretty good question came across the newsgroups the other day. Someone was asking what are the differences between IE's "medium" and "medium-high" security settings. I did some digging, and found only this on MSDN: About URL security zone templates. No wonder it's difficult to find -- the terminology is different, and the table is organized by URL actions, not by the text in the dialog.

Someone on the IE security team forwarded me a document that had additional details. So here, for your enjoyment, is a chart listing the default settings for each security level. To answer the newsgroup poster, "medium" and "medium-high" aren't the same.

About the formatting: to get it to fit within the width of the blog's text section, I've made some abbreviations.

Column headings

Entries

H

High

D

Disable

MH

Medium-high

E

Enable

M

Medium

P

Prompt

ML

Medium-low

L

Low

In a few cases, the table shows a number rather than D or E or P; below the table is a description of each such entry.

At the very bottom of this post I've included the settings from the privacy tab, too.

Note: these settings reflect those for Internet Explorer 7 on Vista SP1.

After receiving no support from agents at the Verizon Wireless store or by agents on the phone, I decided to write them and make it an open letter. It’s no secret that Verizon has a great network, but it’s also no secret that their phone selection stinks. I don’t want to leave them and am hoping that whatever little bad press I can cause will encourage them to resolve the issue. If not, I’m tapping out. For 3 years I have hated my phone and loved their network. I’m ready to feel mediocre about both. Here it goes:

I am currently without a phone and would appreciate a speedy reply.

I have been a Verizon Wireless customer for over 5 years and my monthly bill easily averages over $200 during that time frame. While I love your network, I have been completely unsatisfied by your selection of phones. It is a stretch to say that my last phone worked—it had a feature called a battery that allowed me to switch from the car charger to my office charger without dying. And I waited—under duress—until I was allowed to purchase a new phone with the discount.

My current phone has a wonderful battery life, but this is the 4th time the charger has snapped off in the phone. The phone is fine, but I keep paying $30 for new chargers. I refuse to purchase another or wait until February when I will be eligible for a new phone. You sold a phone with a design flaw, and I’m not even asking for a refund or a free phone. Just allow me to take a chance on a new one at the 2 year contract renewal rate.

If not, I will gladly pay the early termination fee and leave Verizon. On general principle, I will spend more money canceling my account with you than I would likely receive as a discount on a new phone. As a customer, I consider it unacceptable that you sell inferior phones and leave me with no recourse.

The first time I waited haplessly to become eligible for a new phone. I will not suffer a second time. If you don’t like the fact that you will end up losing money by allowing me to purchase a new phone early, I suggest you take it up your vendors who supply you with awful products. I can promise you that we will both lose more money if you don’t.

Sincerely,

According to GCN, NIST has released a revision to SP800-60 Vol 1 and Volume 2. The two-volume Special Publication 800-60 Revision 1, “Guide for Mapping Types of Information and Information Systems to Security Categories,” is a revision of guidelines published in 2004.
Asset and data classification is the keystone to building proper protective schemes. Simply, if you don't know what you have, you can't apply the appropriate levels of value and importance.
SP 800-60's intro reads:
"The identification of information processed on an information system is essential to the proper selection of security controls and ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the system and its information. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Special Publication (SP) 800-60 has been developed to assist Federal government agencies to categorize information and information systems."
Give this document a read; while it is geared to a federal agency audience, it is entirely useful for baselining your own classification process.
