      <title><![CDATA[America's Next Top Hash Function Begins]]></title>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>You might not have realized it, but the next great battle of cryptography began this month. It's not a political battle over export laws or key escrow or NSA eavesdropping, but an academic battle over who gets to be the creator of the next hash standard.</p>

<p>Hash functions are the most commonly used cryptographic primitive, and the most poorly understood. You can think of them as fingerprint functions: They take an arbitrary long data stream and return a fixed length, and effectively unique, string. The security comes from the fact that while it's easy to generate the fingerprint from a file, it's infeasible to go the other way and generate a file given a fingerprint. </p>

<p>Originally created to make digital signatures more efficient, hashes are now used to secure the very fundamentals of our information infrastructure: in password logins, secure web connections, encryption key management, virus and malware scanning, and almost every cryptographic protocol in current use. Without cryptographic hash functions, the internet would simply not work. At the same time, there isn't a good theory of hash functions. Unlike encryption algorithms, there are no secret keys involved; this makes it harder to mathematically define exactly what hash functions are.

<p>
The National Institute of Standards and Technology, NIST, is <a href="http://csrc.nist.gov/groups/ST/hash/sha-3/index.html">holding a competition</a> to replace the SHA family of hash functions. "SHA" stands for "Secure Hash Algorithm." It was developed by the NSA in 1993 to replace the commercial MD4 and MD5 algorithms, and has been updated several times since then. All the SHA algorithms are very similar, and have been <a href="http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2005/02/cryptanalysis_o.html">increasingly under attack</a>, so NIST <a href="http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2005/10/nist_hash_works_1.html">wants to replace them</a>.</p>

<p>The competition is important because, unlike other technological standards, committee design &#151; balancing the interests of diverse constituents &#151; isn't conducive to good security. Security is best when it's designed by expert teams and then subjected to public review. And cryptography is best when it's chosen by competition.</p>

<p>In 1997, NIST held a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Encryption_Standard_process">competition</a> for a <a href="http://csrc.nist.gov/archive/aes/index.html">block cipher</a> to replace DES. Fifteen candidates and three-and-a-half years later, Rijndael became the new Advanced Encryption Standard &#151; AES. NIST is doing the same thing for what it's calling SHA-3 (not, for some unexplained reason, the Advanced Hash Standard or AHS).</p>

<p>The deadline was October 31, and NIST received 64 submissions. This isn't surprising &#151; I <a href="http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2008/10/the_skein_hash.html">predicted</a> 80 &#151; as most of the 15 AES submitters were professors, whose students at the time have become professors themselves, with their own students. (If NIST does a stream cipher competition in another ten years, they should expect about 256 submissions.) These submissions came from academia, from industry, and from hobbyists. <cite><a href="http://www.cio.com/article/461164/Amateurs_and_Pros_Vie_to_Build_New_Crypto_Standard">CIO magazine</a></cite> recently interviewed one of the submitters, who is 15. Twenty-eight submissions have been made <a href="http://ehash.iaik.tugraz.at/wiki/The_SHA-3_Zoo">public</a> by the submitters, and six of those have been broken.  </p>

<p>NIST is going through all the submissions right now, making sure they are complete and proper. Their goal is to publish all accepted submissions by the end of November, in advance of the <a href="http://csrc.nist.gov/groups/ST/hash/timeline.html">First Hash Function Candidate Conference</a>, to be held in Belgium right after the <a href="https://www.cosic.esat.kuleuven.be/fse2009/index.shtml">Fast Software Encryption workshop</a> in February.  </p>

<p>The group expects to quickly make a first cut of algorithms &#151; hopefully to about a dozen &#151; and give the community a year of cryptanalysis before making a second cut in 2010. After another year of cryptanalysis, NIST will choose a winner in 2011. Expect a final standard by 2012.</p>

<p>My advice for software developers is to let the process run its course. While it's tempting to use the new cool algorithms in your designs, it's far too soon to trust any of them. This process is likely to result in all sorts of new research results in hash function security, and some real cryptanalytic surprises.  Give the community a few years to figure out which ones are good and which aren't.</p>

<p>I've previously called this sort of thing a cryptographic demolition derby: The last one left standing wins. But that's only partially true. Certainly all the groups will spend the next few years trying to cryptanalyze each other, but in the end there will be a bunch of unbroken algorithms. NIST will select one based on performance and features.</p>

<p>NIST has stated that the goal of this process is not to choose the best standard but to choose a good standard. I think that's smart; in this process, the best is the enemy of the good. While there's no rush to choose a new standard &#151; the SHA-2 algorithms will remain secure for the foreseeable future &#151; we don't want to analyze the candidates forever.</p>

<p>Personally, I was part of a group of eight cryptographers that submitted <a href="http://www.schneier.com/skein.html">Skein</a> to the competition. A decade ago, writing <a href="http://www.schneier.com/twofish.html">Twofish</a> and participating in the AES process was the most fun I had ever had in cryptography. These next few years promise to be even more fun.</p>

In cases where malware are the zero-day threats, generating their signatures for detection via anti-virus (AV) scan engines becomes an important reactive security function. However, modern malware can easily bypass AV scanners using packers, which can hide malicious file contents from detection. This article describes how packers work, and the three most commonly used unpacking methods. The authors describe the logic flow and behavior of Upack, a popular packer, as an example of a software packer.<br style="clear: both;"/>

      <title><![CDATA[Root of Trust ?]]></title>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I&#8217;ve given <a href="http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rnc1/talks/080211-mailserver.pdf">some</a> <a href="http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rnc1/talks/080915-ISPsecurity.pdf">talks</a> this year about the Internet&#8217;s insecure infrastructure &#8212; stressing that fundamental protocols such as <a href="http://www.bgp4.as/">BGP</a> and <a href="http://oreilly.com/catalog/9780596100575/">DNS</a> cannot really be trusted at the moment. Although they work just fine most of the time, they are susceptible to attacks which can mean, for example, that you visit the wrong website, or your email is intercepted.</p>
<p>Steps are now being taken, <a href="http://voices.washingtonpost.com/securityfix/2008/08/dns_security_mandatory_for_all.html">rather faster</a> since Dan Kaminsky came up with a <a href="http://www.doxpara.com/?p=1185">really effective DNS poisoning attack</a>, to secure DNS by using <a href="http://www.dnssec.net/">DNSSEC</a>.</p>
<p>The basic idea of DNSSEC is that when you get an answer from the DNS it will be signed by someone you trust. At some point the &#8220;trust anchor&#8221; for the system will be &#8220;.&#8221; the DNS root, but for the moment there&#8217;s <a href="http://www.unbound.net/documentation/howto_anchor.html">just a handful of &#8220;trust anchors&#8221; one level down</a> from that. One such anchor is the &#8220;.se&#8221; country code domain for Sweden. Additionally, Brazil (.br), Puerto Rico (.pr), and Bulgaria (.bg) have signed their zones, but that&#8217;s about it for today.</p>
<p>So, wishing to get some experience with the <a href="http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/bravenew/">brave new world</a> of DNSSEC, I decided that Sweden was <a href="http://www.cartoonbank.com/item/25468">the &#8220;in&#8221; place to be</a>, and to purchase &#8220;cloudba.se&#8221; and roll out my first DNSSEC signed domain.</p>
<p>The purchase wasn&#8217;t as easy as it might have been &#8212; when you buy a domain, Sweden <a href="http://www.iis.se/docs/general_conditions.pdf">insists</a> that people provide their <a href="http://www.papersplease.org/id.html">identity numbers</a> (albeit they have absolutely no way of checking if you&#8217;re telling the truth) &#8212; or if a company they want a VAT or registration number (which are checkable, albeit I suspect they didn&#8217;t bother). I also found that they don&#8217;t like spaces in the VAT number &#8212; which held things up for a while!</p>
<p>However, eventually they sent me a PGP signed email to tell me I was now the proud owner of &#8220;cloudba.se&#8221;.  Unfortunately, this email wasn&#8217;t in RFC3156 PGP/MIME format (or any other format that my usually <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turnpike_(software)">pretty capable email client</a> understood).</p>
<p>The email was signed with key 0xF440EE9B which was reassuring because the <a href="http://www.iis.se/">.se registry</a> gives the fingerprint for this key on their website <a href="https://domainmanager.iis.se/start/customerservice">here</a>. Rather less reassuringly footnote (*) next to the fingerprint says &#8220;<em>.SE signature for outgoing e-mail. (**) June 1 through August 31.</em>&#8221; (the (**) is for a second level of footnote, which is absent &#8212; and of course it is now September).</p>
<p>They also enable you to fetch the key through a link on <a href="http://www.iis.se/support">this page</a> to their &#8220;PGP nyckel-ID&#8221; at <a href="http://subkeys.pgp.net:11371/pks/lookup?op=get&#038;search=0xFCEC5128F440EE9B">http://subkeys.pgp.net</a>.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, fetching the key shows that the signature on the email is invalid.</p>
<p>Since the email seems to have originated in the Windows world, but was signed on a Linux box (giving it a mixture of 0D 0A and 0A line endings), then pushed through a three year old copy of <a href="http://search.cpan.org/dist/MIME-tools/">MIME-tools</a> I suppose the failure isn&#8217;t too surprising. But strictly the invalid signature means that I shouldn&#8217;t trust the email&#8217;s contents at all &#8212; because the contents have definitely been tampered with since the signature was applied.</p>
<p>Since the point of the email was to get me to login for the first time to the registry website and set my password to control the domain, this is a little <a href="http://www.cartoonbank.com/item/32907">unfortunate</a>.</p>
<p>Even if the signature had been correct, then should I trust the PGP key?</p>
<p>Well it is pointed to from the registry website which is a Good Thing. However, they do themselves no favours by referencing a version on <a href="http://www.rossde.com/PGP/pgp_keyserv.html">the public key servers</a>. I checked who had signed the key (which is an <a href="http://www.pgpi.org/doc/pgpintro/#p20">alternative way of trusting its provenance</a> &#8212; since the email had arrived to a non-DNSSEC secured domain). Turned out there was no-one I knew, and of 4 individual signatures, 2 were from expired keys. The other signature was the IIS root key &#8212; which sounds promising. That has 8 signatures, once again not people I know &#8212; but only 1 from a non-expired key, so perhaps I can get to know some of the other 7?</p>
<p>Of course, anyone can sign a key on a public key server, so perhaps it makes sense for .se to suggest that people fetch a key with as many signatures as possible &#8212; there&#8217;s more chance of it being signed by someone they know. Anyway, I have now added my own signature, using an email address at my nice shiny new domain. However, it is possible that I may not have increased the level of trust <img src='http://www.lightbluetouchpaper.org/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif' alt=':(' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[I spoke with McAfee recently, following <a href="http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Security/McAfee-Putting-Malware-Signatures-in-the-Cloud/">my column about its Artemis technology</a>. I learned a few things.

Artemis kicks in when the local anti-virus scanner sees, through behavioral methods, if the file is suspicious. Then it sends a fingerprint of the file up to the Artemis servers for further analysis.

I had assumed that this fingerprint was a hash of some kind, but that was a simplistic assumption. The fingerprint includes characteristics of the file, including the ones that the scanner used to determine that the file was suspicious: Is it packed? Using certain packers in particular? Is it compressed (not the same thing)? Is it a certain size? In case I was unclear before, none of this involves signatures in the conventional sense.

It occurs to me that this could lower false-positives, compared with conventional behavioral analysis, because it subjects suspicious threats to more extensive analysis in the cloud. It all depends on how aggressive McAfee is at that stage.

Another thought I had is that since Artemis kicks in as a result of behavioral analysis, the threat has already hit the system by the time Artemis is invoked. Presumably the process is asynchronous and Artemis could return its analysis some time after the submission. If this is the case, it could be awhile during which malware is running rampant on your system.

      <title><![CDATA[It Was Sposed to Be So Eaaasy]]></title>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Earlier this year, I gave a <a href="http://1raindrop.typepad.com/1_raindrop/2008/04/rsa-debrief-p-1.html">talk</a> with on Breaking Web Services with Brian Chess at RSA. We pointed out that adding security into Web services is an exercise left to the implementer, the standards bodies and vendors give you some primitives, but it is still up to you to figure out all of the items on the <a href="http://arctecgroup.net/pdf/WebServicesSecurityChecklist.pdf">Web services security checklist</a>&#160;should work together in a cohesive system. Needless to say, there are many ways to shoot yourself in the foot.</p><br /><div>So during our talk, someone from Oracle stands up and says, &quot;hey, you guys are making this stuff sound hard. Its not hard we support WS-Security...&quot; etc. Again, the whole point of our presentation was *not* that there are not very interesting general purpose security capabilities in Web services, our point was that you need to figure out the architecture yourself, and then bend the tools to your will. Oh, and deliver on time.</div><br /><div>So imagine my surprise, when I read this article <a href="http://www.ddj.com/database/209400693">&quot;Digitally Signing and Verifying Messages in Web Services&quot;&#160;</a>which talks about using Oracle&#39;s WSM tools to sign Web service messages and verify signatures in Web service messages, but only addresses integrity - absolutely nowt on authenticity! Integrity is important, but there are lots of times when it is not enough. Many times your service needs to be concerned with replay attacks, authentication policies and so on. To deal with those things, we would typically add policies and capabilities for timestamps, nonces and other primitives into the signature block, but the article is silent on those things. (Rad Mark O&#39;Neill&#39;s <a href="http://xmlnetworking.blogspot.com/2008/08/digitally-signing-and-verifying.html">post</a> on this as well)</div><br /><div>Its not about _can_ the standards do something or other, I mean given the right resources the standards can put a monkey on the moon, its about what use cases have they engineered in and what is supported in the tools today. I firmly believe SAML has such great adoption across the industry because they have a use case centric view and so gave the vendors something to engineer and optimize for. I think we&#39;ll still get there in WS-Security and other areas as well, but the use cases are not built into the spec (as with SAML) and so its taking longer.</div><br /><div>One of our points in the talk was - we want you vendors to do your job better and instead of shipping a box Legos, ship a Lego gas station, a Lego airport, and so on. Connect some dots for your customers.&#160;</div><br /><div>What I see in <a href="http://arctecgroup.net/training.htm">training</a> on this topic, is sort of the following - 1) Do I need Web service security? 2) Oh ok, well can I get by with SSL? 3) Oh wait that doesn&#39;t actually protect my assets, can I just use WS-Security? 4) Oh wait, WS-Security isn&#39;t just a checkbox for security, I need to figure out timestamps, nonces, signatures, encryption policies and so on.&#160;And finally 5) How do I accomplish this?</div><br /><div>Once we get to step 5 then the real work can begin. Its not easy to get a lot of developers through all of this, and again this is before the real work begins. Even once the lead developers and architects figure this out, there is still the little matter of transitioning it to the rest of the team.</div><br /><div>I remember I was working with an enterprise architect several years ago, and he bought a Web service XML gateway like <a href="http://www.vordel.com/">Vordel</a> to add WS-Security support into his Web services apps, but he didn&#39;t even buy it as a runtime tool, he bought it as Security API, the runtime enforcement in his opinion was a bonus! He said in effect, well I know I need to do this, but I can&#39;t expose all these security primitives directly to my developers.</div><br /><div>So yeah, I wish it was easier, but in my experience its not right now. Its not about raw capabilities its about use case realization. I think learning from what has worked well is the way to go. The cryptographers believe in the perfection of mathematics, and the security world believes in the completeness of their own learning. They are all wrong, but only at the large level of generalisations, not at the detailed level of particular claims. Any one of the claims,&#160;<em>in isolation</em>&#160;can be shown to be true. But, generalising these brittle claims to be solid building blocks is a completely different question. Few of the claims are strong enough to partake in a general model without severe support; the general model of secure browsing is the best evidence of how it is secure in name only.</span></p></blockquote><blockquote class="webkit-indent-blockquote" style="margin: 0 0 0 40px; border: none; padding: 0px;"><p><span style="color: #666666; font-family: georgia; line-height: 19px;"><br /></span><span style="color: #666666; font-family: georgia; line-height: 19px; ">How then is it built? By accident or by design, a series of claims meet together in a holy ring of righteous architecture. Each of the proponents claim loudly that their part is strong, but the ring has no strength. Eventually, one of the claims in the links is broken. For phishing, the browsers never did have the potential to show authenticity; not only did they not have the security strength to do it (c.f., Skype v.&#160;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-site_request_forgery" style="color: #003366; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: underline; ">CSRF</a>), they didn&#39;t even do it in practice (recall the lost padlock?), and their recent efforts to show authenticity (c.f. colour debate) reveal how far they are from understanding even the goal, let alone the implementation. Once that link was broken, and money was made, all the others revealed their weaknesses, as crooks systematically worked to breach the lot.</span><br /><span style="color: #666666; font-family: georgia; line-height: 19px; "><br /></span></p></blockquote><blockquote class="webkit-indent-blockquote" style="margin: 0 0 0 40px; border: none; padding: 0px;"><p><span style="color: #666666; font-family: georgia; line-height: 19px; ">If we look at the wider financial collapse, now underscored by the nationalisation of the worlds biggest financiers of mortgages ($ 5.3 trillion.... or is it $ 5.4 ?), we see the same pattern. The bankers believed in their product. The originators believed in their origination, the securitizers believed in their free market and accurate price, and the holders believed in the assets. The CDO, the subprime, the other 100 special names, each was a contract. Each was clear in and of itself. But, when placed end-to-end, in a line, with a bunch of other agreements, the claims that were good in isolation were not strong enough to participate in the super-claim made of the overall edifice.</span><br /><span style="color: #666666; font-family: georgia; line-height: 19px; ">The financial system was built like a bridge; each piece rested on the previous one. And then, the clever architects bent the bridge around ... and around again, until the first piece met the last. And those architectures are built on the precise mindsets that Iang portrays.</span><br /></span></div><br /><div>Banks are apt to comply with their auditor&#39;s request to run scans their resources, but what they do not do is build systems with architectural integrity. Why do you log in with a username and password? Why are the <a href="http://1raindrop.typepad.com/1_raindrop/2008/09/your-companies-biggest-security-hole---what-is-the-bgp-style-vuln-lurking-in-software-security.html">messaging systems not locked down</a>? Where are the strong identity tokens and claims? Do banks know that they are <a href="http://1raindrop.typepad.com/1_raindrop/2008/08/mainframe-mindset.html">not on a mainframe any more</a>?&#160;</div><br /><div>Sadly, they don&#39;t - they build a web silo and then they hook it up the legacy silo and put a wide open messaging system in between. There is no end to end security design, just silos. The banks build distributed systems, they operate distributed systems, but they don&#39;t design distributed systems.</div><br /><div>It is too bad, its never been a core competency of banks to design systems, but it never mattered before because IBM just drew up the plan and the banks followed it. Now everyone has their own plan, but the security architecture reflects an auditor&#39;s checklist and manager&#39;s <a href="http://1raindrop.typepad.com/1_raindrop/2008/08/golf-driven-security.html">golf games</a> not risk management decisions or security architecture.</div><br /><div>If a tree falls in someone else&#39;s silo, your system doesn&#39;t hear until their silo knocks yours over...</div>]]></content:encoded>

Excluding the conspiracy theories, a false positive when your solution is integrated in the second most popular search engine is bad, especially when other <a href="http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site=nruns.com">automated crawling approaches</a> are successfully detecting the site as a non-malicious one. How come? It's all a matter of how you define malicious activity, and what exactly are you trying to protect your users from.<br />

"<i>Our tests are very accurate," Dowling said. "The frequency of false positives is fewer than one a month. Changes in classifications we make are almost always because sites have changed their behaviour. "The email tests are the ones than have the most false positives. </b>Take for instance the Hack in the Box security conference, which is considered as the <a href="http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/hitb.org/downloads/11950271/">download publisher of a file hosted at packetstormsecurity.org</a>. What's interesting to point out is that just like a huge percentage of already flagged as potentially harmful sites that haven't been re-checked in months, with Hack in the Box's case the link was last checked in February, 2008. And since <b>hitb.org</b> is now distributing spyware, any site that it links to is also flagged as badware, like <b>hackinthebox.org</b> itself :<br />

"<i>When we tested this site we found links to hitb.org, which we found to be a distributor of downloads some people consider adware, spyware or other potentially unwanted programs.</i>'<br />
<br />
These sites aren't SQL injected, IFRAME-ed or embedded with malware whatsoever, so it's like flagging a gun store as a malicious store because of the inventory there - wrong generalization aiming to bring order into the underground chaos at the first place is prone to result in lots of false positives, <a href="http://ddanchev.blogspot.com/2007/07/insecure-bureaucracy-in-germany.html">a wrong mentality that certain countries are starting to embrace</a>.</div><br />
The bottom line - is the "<i>do not visit unknown or potentially harmful sites</i>" security tip on the verge of extinction? Probably, as these days, exploited legitimate sites are hosting or redirecting to more malware than potentially harmful sites are.<div class="feedflare">

Russian hacktivists attacking Lithuania and Georgia, several Storm Worm campaigns, a couple of new malware tools, Neosploit team abandoning support for their web malware exploitation kit, CAPTCHA for several of the most popular free email providers getting efficiently attacked in order to resell the bogus accounts registered in the process, several copycat SQL injects next to the evasion techniques applied by the copycats, botnets continuing to commit click fraud and generate revenue for those who own or have rented them, an infamous money mule recruitment service taking advantage of the fast-fluxed network provided by the ASProx botnet - pretty interesting month indeed.<br />

The GPcode authors read the news too, and are catching up with the major weaknesses pointed out in their previous release in order to come with a virtually unbreakable algorithm. And since more evidence of <a href="http://ddanchev.blogspot.com/2008/06/whos-behind-gpcode-ransomware.html">who's behind the GPcode ransomware</a> was gathered, vendors and independent researchers realized that the latest release is also susceptible to a plain simple flaw, namely the encrypted files were basically getting deleting and not securely erased making them fairly easy to recover.<br />

When you know how it works, you can either improve, abuse or destroy it in that very particular order. Chinese bloggers are always very adaptive in respect to spreading their message by obfuscating their messages in a way that common keywords filtering software wouldn't be able to pick them.<br />

This has been an urban legend for a while, but with more services starting to offer hundreds of thousands of pre-registered accounts at these providers, it's surprising that <a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=1514">spam and phishing emails coming from legitimate email providers is increasing</a>. The "vendors" behind these propositions are naturally starting to "vertically integrate" by offering value-added services for extra payments, namely, scripts to automatically abuse the pre-registered accounts for automatic registration of splogs and anything else malicious or blackhat SEO related.<br />

If it were anyone else but a security vendor to come up with such a realistic cartoon aiming to stimulate innovation by emphasizing on how prolific and sophisticated malware groups have become, it would have been a biased cartoon. However, this one is courtesy of a security vendor, and it's pretty objective.<br />

This attack is a good example of a decent PSYOPS operation. Of course they have already build the capabilities to deface and even execute DDoS attacks against Lithuania, so why not put them in a "stay tuned" mode, by speculating on the upcoming attack and then executing it making it look like they delived what they've promised? This a lone gunman mass defacement given that the sites were all hosted on a single ISP, with no indication of any kind of coordination whatsoever. The same for the <a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=1533">Georgia President’s web site which was under DDoS attack from Russian hackers</a> later this month. Despite that the hacktivists behind it dedicated a separate C&amp;C for the attack, one that hasn't been used in any type of previous attacks so far, they did a minor mistake by using a secondary command and control location that's known to have been connected with a particular "botnet on demand" service in the past. The second attack once again proves that you don't need to build capacity when you can basically outsource the process to someone else.<br />

And while Photobucket.com remained silent during the entire incident, the hosting provider that was used by the Netdevilz team in the two attacks, since they were also responsible for the ICANN and IANA DNS hijackings, <a href="http://ddanchev.blogspot.com/2008/06/update-to-photobuckets-dns-hijacking.html">technological and social engineeringissued a statement</a>.<br />

And I predict we will detect at the end of 2008 between 450,000 and 22,000,000 malware”. OK, I joke a bit, but I also want to demonstrate there are many manners to count malware and you must not judge a product only by the announced number of detections.</i>"<br />
<br />
You have an antivirus software that's detecting 10 million malware samples, in reality, while it's protecting you from 10 million malware samples it wouldn't protect you from <a href="http://ddanchev.blogspot.com/2008/07/coding-spyware-and-malware-for-hire.html">the just coded for hire malware bot that's about to get used in a targeted attack</a>. The number of malware samples detected by any antivirus vendor is up to how they actually count them, do they <a href="http://ddanchev.blogspot.com/2006/08/malware-bot-families-technology-and.html">take into consideration malware families</a>, do they actually distinguish them, or are they in fact perceiving each and every malware as as seperate "bachelor".<br />
<br />
Given the speed in which malware authors are lauching a DDoS attack against AV vendors by crunching out dozens of malware variants parts of a single family, their actions could start directly driving the data storage market, and if they continue maintaining the same rhythm, soon you'll be partitioning a separate GB for the signatures files. Then again, the number of malware samples detected by an antivirus solution isn't the single most important benchmark for its actual usability in a real-life situation, keep that in mind.<br />
<br />
