      <title><![CDATA[The Motivation Behind Adaptive Analytics and CEP]]></title>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This is a continuation of <a title="The Genesis of Complex Event Processing: Asymmetric Capabilities" rel="bookmark" href="../2008/09/29/the-genesis-of-complex-event-processing-asymmetric-capabilites/">The Genesis of Complex Event Processing: Asymmetric Capabilities</a> and <a title="CEP, Event Noise and Asymmetric Event Processing" rel="bookmark" href="../2008/10/02/cep-event-noise-and-asymmetric-event-processing/">CEP, Event Noise and Asymmetric Event Processing</a> where I have been discussing the motivation behind CEP and adaptive analytics in cyberspace.</p>
<p>Around the same time that Professor Luckham and his team was working on CEP applications in network management and security management, I was leading efforts to build network and security management control centers for the <a href="http://www.af.mil">United States Air Force</a>.  In the beginning, dating back to 1994, my Internet-related work was for <a href="http://www.acc.af.mil/" target="_blank">Air Combat Command (ACC)</a>, working out of ACC headquarters at <a href="http://www.langley.af.mil/" target="_blank">Langley Air Force Base</a>.</p>
<p>In 1997, I lead a technical team that developed countermeasures against an actual distributed Internet-based attack on the Langley AFB SMTP email infrastructure.  This attack was documented in a technical paper, <a href="http://www.thecepblog.com/e-mail-bombs-and-countermeasures-cyber-attacks-on-availability-and-brand-integrity/" target="_blank"><em>E-Mail Bombs and Countermeasures: Cyber Attacks on Availability and Brand Integrity,</em> IEEE Network Magazine, Vol. 12, No. 2, pp. 10-17, March/April 1998</a>.  In addition, this attackand countermeasures I designed was featured in Popular Science Magazine in an 1998 article, <a href="http://www.thecepblog.com/warcom-by-frank-vizard/" target="_blank">War.Com</a> and other news channels.  I also published a number of related papers on this topic.</p>
<p>Our team used a rule-based approach for countermeasures against massive email bombs attacks on the Langley Air Force Base email infrastructure.   We called this rule-based system, <em>BombShelter.</em> and it was written in <a href="http://www.perl.org/" target="_blank">PERL</a>.  I developed both the original software architecture and the original working prototype for BombShelter (in two days) and then we turned the software over to our team who used the rule-based approach for daily attack countermeasures.</p>
<p>I watched for days, and then weeks, as my team designed rules, and the attackers wrote new attacks that circumvented the rules.  Some folks in the Pentagon used to say that I &#8220;lead the effort to fight the first war in cyberspace&#8221;.   It might have have been the first cyberwar, I am not sure, but it was certainly the first publicly documented cyberwar.  There is no doubt about this.</p>
<p>Without getting into all the historical footnotes and significance of this cyberwar that was fought with experts and rule-based systems, I would like to jump to an important conclusion.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>Rule-based systems are useful, but have limited functionality and scaleability in most complex event processing applications.</em></p></blockquote>
<p>Rule-based systems are human resource intensive because rule-based systems cannot learn and adapt on their own, humans learn and then write new rules.  This is how rule-based systems work.</p>
<p>This is the motivation behind why I spend a lot of time to search for new, more efficient and adaptive methods as alternatives to rule-based systems.   After extensive research, I published a series of papers on the future of intrusion detection in the Internet.  <a href="http://www.thecepblog.com/intrusion-detection-systems-and-multisensor-data-fusion/" target="_blank"><em>Intrusion Detection Systems &amp; Multisensor Data Fusion - Creating Cyberspace Situational Awareness</em></a> <a class="external autonumber" title="http://www.silkroad-asia.com/papers/pdf/acm-p99-bass.pdf" rel="nofollow" href="http://www.silkroad-asia.com/papers/pdf/acm-p99-bass.pdf">[1]</a>, helped lead an evolution in Internet security, particularly in the area of network-based intrusion detection systems (IDS).</p>
<p>In my published research work, motivated by limitations with rule-based approaches, I used the same mature functional model that is used to process missile attacks, control global air traffic, and other complex event processing applications in physical space; but I applied these concepts to cyberspace.</p>
<p>Around the same time, Professor Luckham and others were working on similar problems, all related to real-time detection and response to threats in cyberspace.  They were also funded by the US government.</p>
<blockquote><p>Sidebar: Stream processing of transaction- based systems (databases), another area of interest, was focused on a totally different problem, which was the low latency processing of straight-thru processing in databased-oriented systems.   These stream processing systems were, and remain however,  rule-based systems.  The problems we were trying to solve in cyberspace, however, cannot be efficiently and pragmatically solved by rule-based systems alone.  Only relatively simple scenarios can be efficiently detected by rule-based stream processing systems.</p></blockquote>
<p>The vast majority of complex event processing classes of problems require rules plus advanced algorithms that can learn and adapt in real-time.    I know this, not from reading papers or taking university classes on rule-bases systems, but from working on some very challenging operational problems in real-time.    This is why I remain interested in complex event processing and why I continue to elaborate on why rule-based systems have limitations.</p>

What&#39;s the point of requiring strong passwords if you allow anyone to reset the password on an account by answering a (potentially inane) question? And just how many good security questions are there, and how many web sites will ask similar questions, allowing the owner of one web site to reset a user&#39;s password at another site that uses the same question? I&#39;m pretty sure that the typical user will tend to select the same security question if it&#39;s available at multiple sites. In many web sites I&#39;ve seen, the security question is clearly the weak link in the chain.</p> <p>Apparently <a href="http://voices.washingtonpost.com/securityfix/2008/10/son_of_tenn_lawmaker_indicted.html?hpid=news-col-blogs" target="_blank">a fellow recently was indicted</a> on charges of <a href="http://blog.wired.com/27bstroke6/2008/09/palin-e-mail-ha.html" target="_blank">hacking</a> into the Republican vice presidential nominee&#39;s Yahoo <a href="http://wikileaks.org/wiki/VP_contender_Sarah_Palin_hacked" target="_blank">email account</a>, by simply doing some research on the Internet to find her birthday, zip code, and the answer to her security question, &quot;Where did you meet your spouse?&quot; All told the attack reportedly took under an hour to complete.</p> <p>Given the level of interest in Palin and other public figures, and the large amount of information about them available to the public, it makes sense that they will be some of the easiest targets for attacks like this.</p><div style="clear:both;"></div><img src="http://www.pluralsight.com/community/aggbug.aspx?PostID=53812" width="1" height="1">]]></content:encoded>

<p>Proxy caches, combined with poorly written session management code, can easily leads to serious security flaws similar to what we highlighted in <a href="http://blog.isc2.org/isc2_blog/2008/09/serious-securit.html">A New Security Breach in Google Docs Revealed</a>.</p>
<p>Web developers have no control over proxy caches in the Internet. However, developers do have control of the code they write and their admin teams have configuration control of their web servers. Developers must assume the worst case Internet scenario with aggressive Internet cache management policies that serve cached data for economic and performance reasons.</p>
<p>As a consequence, this fact-of-life on the Internet sometimes results in multiple web clients being sent the same Set-Cookie HTTP headers, for example.  Caching proxy servers should obtain a fresh cookie for the each new client request. Ideally, proxy caches should not cache session management cookies and distribute cached cookies to multiple clients. However, application developers cannot assume that proxy caches are well behaved, especially for applications where security and privacy are required.</p>
<p>Web developers cannot know whether their content is consumed directly or via a proxy cache. Developers also cannot assume that the HTTP responses will be delivered to the intended browser. Moreover, developers cannot be sure that the intended browser even receives the intended content.  For example, a session ID issued to a client gets used while it is valid or until abandoned and expired. If it is served and delivered in response to an unencrypted HTTP GET request, there’s no guarantee it will be consumed by the intended web browser.</p>
<p>Ideally, SSL should be used on all web transactions that require confidentiality and privacy, including our recent <a href="http://blog.isc2.org/isc2_blog/2008/09/serious-securit.html">Google Docs breach</a>.  On the other hand, even SSL is not foolproof. For example, many web developers do not correctly set the &#8220;Encrypted Sessions Only&#8221; cookie property. These incorrectly configured “secure” servers will send HTTPS cookies in the open, unencrypted.</p>

      <title><![CDATA[ePolicing - Tomorrow the world?]]></title>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This week has finally seen an <a href="http://press.homeoffice.gov.uk/press-releases/new-specialist-ecrime-unit">announcement</a> that the <a href="http://www.met.police.uk/pceu/index.htm">Police Central e-crime Unit</a> (PCeU) is to be funded by the Home Office. However, the largesse amounts to just £3.5 million of new money spread over three years, with the Met putting up a further £3.9 million &#8212; but whether the Met&#8217;s contribution is &#8220;new&#8221; or reflects a move of resources from their existing <a href="http://www.met.police.uk/computercrime/">Computer Crime Unit</a> I could not say.</p>
<p>The announcement is of course Good News &#8212; because once the PCeU is up and running next Spring, it should plug (to the limited extent that £2 million a year can plug) the &#8220;level 2&#8243; eCrime gap that I&#8217;ve <a href="http://www.lightbluetouchpaper.org/2006/02/06/mysterious-and-menacing/">written</a> <a href="http://www.lightbluetouchpaper.org/2006/10/13/mainstreaming-ecrime/">about</a> <a href="http://www.lightbluetouchpaper.org/2007/02/11/soca-we-just-want-your-money/">before</a>. viz: that SOCA tackles &#8220;serious and organised crime&#8221; (level 3), your local police force tackles local villains (level 1), but if criminals operate outside their force&#8217;s area &#8212; and on the Internet this is more likely than not &#8212; yet they don&#8217;t meet SOCA&#8217;s threshold, then who is there to deal with them?</p>
<p>In particular, the PCeU is envisaged to be the unit that deals with the intelligence packages coming from the <a href="http://www.cityoflondon.police.uk/CityPolice/ECD/Fraud/">City of London Fraud Squad&#8217;s</a> new online Fraud Reporting <a href="http://www.kablenet.com/kd.nsf/Frontpage/356DD0A1942F3A998025745F0049092C?OpenDocument">website</a> (once intended to launch in November 2008, now scheduled for Summer 2009).</p>
<p>Of course everyone expects the website to generate more reports of eCrime than could ever be dealt with (even with much more money), so the effectiveness of the PCeU in dealing with eCriminality will depend upon their prioritisation criteria, and how carefully they select the cases they tackle.</p>
<p>Nevertheless, although the news this week shows that the Home Office have finally understood the need to fund more ePolicing, I don&#8217;t think that they are thinking about the problem in a sufficiently global context.</p>
<p>A little history lesson might be in order to explain why.<br />
<span id="more-401"></span></p>
<p>Back in 1930&#8217;s, <a href="http://www.fbi.gov/libref/historic/famcases/clyde/clyde.htm">Bonnie and Clyde</a> and other US bank robbers were using the new-fangled automobile to flee across state lines &#8212; creating jurisdictional problems as a result. The US solution was to make bank robbery (along with auto-theft and other related offences) into federal offences rather keeping them as state-specific infractions. In particular this meant that the FBI could provide federal level policing (tracking down and killing <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Dillinger">John Dillinger</a> for example).</p>
<p>We have the same jurisdictional issues dealing with cyberspace, with criminals in one country fleecing consumers in another while using systems hosted in a third. The <a href="http://conventions.coe.int/Treaty/EN/Treaties/Html/185.htm">Convention on Cybercrime</a> addresses part of the problem by trying to ensure international consistency where eLaws are specifically needed (which of course is only the case for small parts of eCriminality, <a href="http://www.opsi.gov.uk/Acts/acts2006/ukpga_20060035_en_1">fraud</a> is fraud whether eEnabled or not). However, there is limited inter-jurisdictional <em>co-ordination</em> for eCrime investigations &#8212; for example <a href="http://www.interpol.int/">Interpol</a> (often <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interpol#Interpol_in_popular_culture">incorrectly perceived</a> to be international police force)  merely keeps a large database and passes faxes from one place to another.</p>
<p>In practice, most cross-border investigations are done as &#8220;joint operations&#8221; and the jointness is usually very limited &#8212; one force does all the legwork and a liaison officer in the other country deals with local paperwork. There&#8217;s usually a <a href="http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/quid-pro-quo.html">quid pro quo</a> element to these joint operations, for budgeting reasons if no other.</p>
<p>What isn&#8217;t happening, or at least only in a handful of very specialised areas, is any international co-operation in setting priorities or selecting cases to pursue. Every country is doing its own thing about eCrime, and there&#8217;s a widespread impression that any criminal who can operate from &#8220;across the state line&#8221; is essentially immune from serious investigation.</p>
<p>We identified this problem last year when we (<a href="http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rja14/">Ross Anderson</a>, <a href="http://www.inf.tu-dresden.de/index.php?node_id=489">Rainer Böhme</a>, <a href="http://people.seas.harvard.edu/~tmoore/">Tyler Moore</a> and <a href="http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rnc1/">myself</a>) wrote a report on <a href="http://www.enisa.europa.eu/doc/pdf/report_sec_econ_&#038;_int_mark_20080131.pdf">Security Economics and the Internal Market</a> for <a href="http://www.enisa.europa.eu/">ENISA</a>. It&#8217;s not an easy one to fix whilst politicians (and populaces) are unwilling to see &#8220;foreign&#8221; police officers operating in their country, and the establishment of a truly international &#8220;cyber police force&#8221; seems equally unlikely.</p>
<p>Our policy proposal to tackle the issue harks back to WWII&#8217;s <a href="http://www.archives.gov/research/holocaust/finding-aid/military/rg-331.html">SHAEF</a>, which has morphed into similar arrangements within <a href="http://www.nato.int/shape/about/background2.htm">NATO</a>. In essence liaison officers from multiple forces would sit around a single table, working with a central coordinator, to set policy and decide which investigations to pursue. They would then communicate back to their own countries, who have specifically budgeted to provide appropriate assistance. So it&#8217;s very like &#8220;joint operations&#8221;, but the scheme is multi-laterial, and has a true command and control function in the centre &#8212; who will quickly learn to shy away from politically sensitive topics and make a real impact on eCriminality.</p>
<p>To summarise then, a <a href="http://www.cartoonbank.com/item/34449">welcome</a> to the Home Office for finally finding a small amount of funding for some country-wide ePolicing; but it&#8217;s well past time to be working on world-wide initiatives.</p>

Sadly, Branch Software is the tip of the iceberg on the top of the affiliates participating in different affiliation based programs, which similar to <a href="http://ddanchev.blogspot.com/2008/03/cybersquatting-security-vendors-for.html">IBSOFTWARE CYPRUS</a> and <a href="http://ddanchev.blogspot.com/2008/04/cybersquatting-symantecs-norton.html">Interactivebrands</a>, which I've been tracking down for a while, are the aggregators of scareware<b><span style="font-weight: normal;"> that popped up on the radars due to their extensive portfolios. These three companies offering software bundles or plain simple fake software, are somewhere in between the food chain of this ecosystem, with the real vendors paying out the commissions on a per installation basis slowly starting to issue invitation codes that they've distributed only across invite-only forums/sections of particular forums.</span></b><br />
<br />
Behind these brands is everyone that is participating in the franchise and is putting personal efforts into monetizing the high payout rates that the fake security software vendor is paying for successful installation. These high payout rates -- with the financing naturally coming straight from other criminal activities online -- are in fact so high, that I can easily say that the last two quarters we've witnesses the largest increase of such domains ever, and they're only heating up since the typosquatting possibilities are countless and they seem to know that as well.<br />
<br />
It's important to point out that their business model of acquiring traffic is outsourced to all the affiliates that do the blackhat SEO, SQL injections, web sessions hijacking of malware infected hosts in order to monetize, so basically, you have an affiliates network whose actions are directly driving the growth into all these areas. Throwing money into the underground marketplace as a "financial injection", is proving itself as a growth factor, and incentive for innovation on behalf of all the participants.<br />
<br />
Here are some of the most recent fake security software domains, a "deja vu" moment with a known RBN domain from a "previous life" that is also parked at one of the servers, and evidence that typosquatting for fraudulent purposes is still pretty active with a dozen of Norton Antivirus related domains, some of which have already started issuing "fake security notices" by brandjacking the vendor for traffic acquisition purposes.<br />

If the real vendors were greedy enough not to share the revenues with others, they would have been the one popping up on the radar, compared to the situation where it's the affiliate network's participations greed that's increasing their visibility online.<br />

<p>Does <a href="http://sfcitizen.com/blog/2008/09/24/its-oracles-world-were-just-living-in-it/" target="_blank">Oracle run the world</a>? I would have to say no but Raj (Larry Ellison is his idol) and the 40,000 Oracle customers that descended upon SF last week might beg to differ. What do James Carville and Mary Matalin have to do with enterprise software? Pretty much nothing, except for the fact that they delivered the opening keynote for <a href="http://www.oracle.com/openworld/2008/index.html" target="_blank">Oracle OpenWorld</a>. (And that’s the only and last politically-oriented thing you’ll hear from me as we run up to the election). <p>But UB40, Elvis Costello and Seal aside, Oracle OpenWorld did offer training, certifications, and always entertaining speeches by Ellison. Ben Worthen’s favorite – “<a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/biztech/2008/09/25/larry-ellisons-brilliant-anti-cloud-computing-rant/?mod=djemTECH" target="_blank">Larry Ellison’s Brilliant Anti-Cloud Computing Rant</a>” delivered to analysts on Thursday. From Ben’s slightly-edited excerpt:</p>
<p>“The interesting thing about cloud computing is that we’ve redefined cloud computing to include everything that we already do. I can’t think of anything that isn’t cloud computing with all of these announcements. The computer industry is the only industry that is more fashion-driven than women’s fashion. Maybe I’m an idiot, but I have no idea what anyone is talking about. What is it? It’s complete gibberish. It’s insane. When is this idiocy going to stop?</p>
<p>“We’ll make cloud computing announcements. I’m not going to fight this thing. But I don’t understand what we would do differently in the light of cloud computing other than change the wording of some of our ads. That’s my view.”</p>
<p>So did everyone catch that? Cloud computing is complete gibberish and idiocy, but apparently Oracle’s already been doing enough around it to advertise the fact. I will have my cake and eat it too!</p>
<p>We’ve been pumping out the posts from the shows we went to – let me tell you, live-blogging is hard when you’re trying to share apparently miniscule amounts of bandwidth with 14,000 other attendees – and we have even more to share as we step back, contemplate and describe how some of the announcements, info and especially roadmaps fit into our overall picture over here at ScienceLogic.</p>
<p>For example, we released the results of our annual industry IT survey last week. <p>And I just had to share this one because it is so bizarre. Are VMware and Paul Maritz guilty of <a href="http://it20.info/blogs/main/archive/2008/09/21/143.aspx" target="_blank">plagiarism</a>? You have to check this out to get even part of the picture. Apparently this guy has posted his slides (we know they are from VMworld 2007 because it says so in the lower-right-hand corner…) which prove that the “virtual datacenter operating system” idea was his idea a year before it showed up on Maritz’s keynote this year. Hmmm. And then after posting all these slides and making all the connections between his presentation and Maritz’s, he says he’s just kidding about the plagiarism. Can anyone sort this out and let me know?</p>
<p>I’ll tell you who wasn’t kidding when I went by their booth at VMworld – a certain chargeback vendor and VMware “partner” who was quite shocked two months ago when they walked into a meeting with VMware about future roadmap. Apparently, the slides they saw (preview of VMware’s announcement re adding extended chargeback capability within vCenter management services) were mighty might similar to slides they had given in a presentation to VMware about their own roadmap. Coincidence? I’ll let you decide. And I’ll also say, their strategy to combat this – support for Hyper-V coming early in 2009.</p>

      <title><![CDATA[The Genesis of Complex Event Processing: Asymmetric Capabilities]]></title>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>More often than not, folks working in the field of complex event processing do not truly understand CEP.   We often see the same folks try to position and mischaracterize CEP as business process orchestration, business process management, event-driven architecture or even an evolution of service-oriented architecture.    Well-intended, this mischaracterization of CEP is often for sales and marketing purposes.  However, sometimes the mischaracterization of CEP is from a lack of understanding of what CEP was designed to accomplish.  These mischaracterizations have very little to do with the original intent of complex event processing.</p>
<p>Originally, researchers in CEP were not trying to solve a problem of streaming data or streaming events.   Often we read this mischaracterization by folks in the database/streaming domain, as they were focused on the low latency processing of streaming events.   A natural extension of this research has been stream processing software (often called &#8220;engines&#8221;) that process streaming data with continuous queries, for example market data feeds for algo-trading or best market order execution.  This mischaracterization is partly responsible for why we see many order processing applications in market data stream processing mislabled as &#8220;complex event processing&#8221; applications.</p>
<p>The genesis of complex event processing was not the stream processing need for &#8220;feeds and speed&#8221; but the processing capability to solve what can be characterized as the &#8220;problem of asymmetric capabilties&#8221;.   The term &#8220;asymmetric&#8221; has been used in the military domain. For example we often hear the term &#8220;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asymmetric_warfare" target="_blank">asymmetric warfare</a>.&#8221;  However, in general the concept of &#8220;asymmetrical processing capablities&#8221; is the true genesis for CEP and related processing concepts and domains.   It is this genesis that distinguishes CEP from EDA, SOA, SOR, and so many other technology oriented concepts.</p>
<p>In order to illustrate what I mean by &#8220;asymmetrical processing capablities&#8221; we will take the example of the evolution of rocketry.    In the early days, scientists learned how to make rockets, I assume with gunpowder and similar chemical compounds to launch rockets.   Over many years the application of rocketry advanced much faster than the ability to understand the situations created in the sky.    In other words, folks could fill the skies with rockets long before they had the capability to track and identify (or sense and respond to)  the rockets in real time.</p>
<p>Therefore, the concept of &#8220;asymmetrical processing capablities&#8221; is the situation where there is a capability, such as &#8220;launch a rocket, sense-and-respond,&#8221; that is asymmetric in nature.    In other words, the capability to detect multiple rocket launches creates an asymmetric situation where it is easy to launch rockets, but hard to detect and defend against those launches.</p>
<p>The same concept can be applied to everyday air travel.   If we could only fly airplanes, but did not have the capability to track the planes, understand situations in airspace, and then respond to changing situations, air travel would be quite difficult.   Lucky for us, the global traveller, there is symmetry in the capabilities to build and fly aircraft and the capabilities to detect, track and follow the evolving situations in the sky.</p>
<p>The genesis of CEP was to solve the problem of asymmetry in cyberspace, or if you prefer, distributed data networks.   The folks who identified, early on,  the problems associated with asymmetry in cyberspace were folks working the the field of network and security management.    This is because there has been, and is currently, a great asymmetry between the capablities to &#8220;launch a process or transaction&#8221; in cyberspace and the capabilties to detect and track what is going on in the same domain.</p>
<p>In my next post on this topic, we will go into some details of this asymmetry and review the first CEP projects from Stanford University in the context of asymmetric processing capabilities in cyberspace.</p>

      <title><![CDATA[(ISC)2s Newest Cash Cow: The CSSLP Certification]]></title>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Earlier this week, during the <a href="http://www.owasp.org/index.php?title=OWASP_NYC_AppSec_2008_Conference">OWASP AppSec 2008 Conference</a>, the people behind the ubiquitous CISSP certification announced their latest creation &#8212; the <a href="http://isc2.org/csslp">Certified Software Security Lifecycle Professional</a> (CSSLP).  In front of a captive audience waiting for a 42&#8243; plasma TV to be raffled, the <a href="http://blog.isc2.org/isc2_blog/tipton/index.html">Executive Director of (ISC)2</a> outlined this new certification designed to appeal to application security professionals.  To his credit, Mr. Tipton stated very clearly that the CSSLP is not intended to measure one&#8217;s technical skillset.  Unfortunately, it&#8217;s inevitable that employers will treat it as such.</p>
<p>You can read all the details on their website (except for the part about the certification not being a measure of practical skills).  From what I can tell, the CSSLP is just the CISSP with different CBKs, or Common Bodies of Knowledge.  As with the CISSP, they are going for broad knowledge, not depth.  Starting in June 2009, you can get certified by taking a paper exam, likely a multiple choice test similar to the CISSP.  Why June?  Because the test isn&#8217;t even written yet &#8212; I&#8217;ve heard from several sources that they are actively soliciting their existing pool of CISSPs to help write test questions.</p>
<p>Ah, but what if you can&#8217;t wait that long and want to get certified <i>right away</i>?  You&#8217;re in luck. If you act before March 31, 2009, you can get grandfathered in without even having to take the exam!  That&#8217;s right, they call it the <a href="https://www.isc2.org/cgi-bin/content.cgi?category=1691">CSSLP Experience Assessment</a>, and here are the requirements:</p>

<li>Upload a resume showing three years of experience related to software security, or four years if you don&#8217;t have a college degree</li>
<li>Write short essays (500 words maximum) discussing four CBKs of your choice</li>
<li>Get a CISSP to vouch for you</li>
<li>Pay $650</li>

<p>Let&#8217;s examine these requirements one at a time.</p>
<p><b>Three years of experience</b>.  (ISC)2 doesn&#8217;t provide any requirements on depth of experience, other than citing the broadly-defined CBKs.  Considering they are targeting everyone from software developers to security assessors to business analysts (yes, really), chances are they are going to accept any experience that is even tangential to the SDLC or software security.</p>
<p><b>Short essays on four of the CBKs</b>.  I asked the (ISC)2 exhibitors specifically what they are looking for to satisfy this requirement, and they said the essays should be a general discussion of the CBK topic, <i>optionally</i> citing your personal experience in that area if you have any.  This messaging is not quite aligned with the website guidance, which states that the essays should be &#8220;Accomplishment Records&#8221; which are self-reported descriptions of experience.  Either way, with a maximum essay length of 500 words, it&#8217;s pretty obvious that substance is not (ISC)2&#8217;s first priority.  Here&#8217;s one data point for you: I spoke to someone who has already submitted the CSSLP Experience Assessment, and he said it took about an hour to write the essays.</p>
<p><b>Get a CISSP to vouch for you</b>.  Actually this can be any (ISC)2 certified person, not just CISSPs.  Contrary to what you&#8217;d expect, though, the person isn&#8217;t vouching for your skillset so much as they are confirming that the attestations on your resume are accurate.</p>
<p><b>Pay $650</b>.  You knew it was coming.  After all, there is money to be made.  How is it that qualifying for the CSSLP through professional experience should cost $650?  If you&#8217;re taking the written exam, fair enough, (ISC)2 does incur the cost of administering and grading that exam (even though the <a href="http://www.scantron.com/datacollection/scanners.aspx">Scantron machine</a> is probably paid off by now).  But $650 for the submitted-online Experience Assessment?  If we assume that the person reading these essay submissions makes a rather generous $100k per year, then $650 accounts for roughly a day and a half.  Will it really take that long to read a <i>maximum</i> of 2,000 words and pass judgment?  Of course not.  (ISC)2 wants to get as many people as possible to qualify based on &#8220;experience&#8221;, seeding the initial pool of CSSLPs and netting them $650 per head for doing next to nothing.</p>
<p>As <a href="http://www.ljkushner.com/about_mstr.html">Lee Kushner</a> stated during his OWASP AppSec presentation (<i>7 Habits of Highly Effective Career Managers</i>), &#8220;the more people who own a cert, the less relevant it becomes.&#8221;  Irrelevant &#8212; that&#8217;s exactly what the CISSP has become, and it&#8217;s exactly where the CSSLP is headed.  Meanwhile, (ISC)2 will sit back and watch while you and your employers continue to fill their coffers.</p>
<p>In closing, let me acknowledge that this blog entry probably comes across as judgmental.  I accept that.  I&#8217;m not ranting against the idea of certifications, though admittedly <a href="http://www.veracode.com/blog/2008/04/not-a-cissp/">I&#8217;m not a fan of them either</a>.  I am disappointed that (ISC)2, an organization with tremendous influence, could have created something more meaningful but chose not to. Why bother when people will just fork over the cash anyway?</p>
