      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://wifinetnews.com/images/muni_icon.jpg" align="right" border="0" hspace="5" /><strong>New York area cable operator Cablevision flips switch for high-traffic areas of Long Island:</strong> They're announcing Thursday that they've turned on the initial phases of their network in Nassau and Suffolk counties, as well as at commuter rail platforms and station parking lots throughout Long Island. The service offers 1.5 Mbps in each direction, the company claims. Detailed site maps for their previous much smaller activated areas are up at <a href="http://www.optimumwifi.com/"><strong>their Wi-Fi information site</strong></a>, and I expect to see these updated soon.</p>

<p>Cablevision will ultimately spend about $300m in building a Wi-Fi network exclusively for its customers; 2.4m of these customers qualify to use the service at no cost. There's no pay as you go option, no monthly subscription; you're either a subscriber of theirs, or not. It's a fascinating strategy, because they're leveraging all these dollars as a tool to crack its competitors in the market. With increasing competition from telephone companies that are offering television service, cable companies need to compete on voice, data, and video, as well as well as on mobile offerings. When the network is built, Cablevision can conceivably offer Wi-Fi telephony service, too.</p>

<p>I'm dying to know what the reduced churn rate and increase in subscriptions will be in six months. Given that hotspot access costs $10 to $30 per month depending on the network, Cablevision is delivering something of value. It's great honey for new subscribers and glue to keep current subscribers.</p>

<p>The company is claiming that with this latest activation, they have the largest Wi-Fi network for consumers in the U.S. They're likely correct. The only other public access network of scale that's being used by large numbers is in Minneapolis, and based on what I know about both networks, Cablevision probably deserves bragging rights. The network in Taipei, Taiwan, is likely still larger, but I haven't heard any usage number in nearly two years; at that point, subscription rates were 10 percent of what had been projected.</p>]]></content:encoded>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Catching up on the blogs, I couldn&#8217;t help but comment on, <a title="Is CEP Mature? <blockquote><p>&#8220;I know for a fact that every <em>major</em> CEP vendor has several dozen paying customers.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Somehow Mark, I don&#8217;t find a dozen paying customers by the top CEP vendors very impressive.</p>
<p>Then, as to somehow justify the lack of public reference clients, Mark takes the position of a Coral8 customer and says,</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;We believe that the use of Coral8 gives us a strategic advantage over our competitors. Why would we want to clue them in?&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Naturally, the same thing could have been said about the first desktop computer, or the first back-office banking system, or the first calculator, or the first telephone, frankly speaking.</p>
<p>Of course, when the technology is mature, then it is &#8220;Hey we have lots of computers!&#8221; &#8220;Hey, look at my fully functional sexy iPhone!&#8221; &#8220;We have the best back office banking systems on the planet by &lt;insert your favorite big vendor here&gt;!&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, all this CEP Solution Secrecy (CEPSS) might just be similar to why the government keeps many IT projects a secret;  the main reason is so we don&#8217;t know how much taxpayer money they are spending!</p>
<p>So, folks, the debate counterpoint that there is some &#8220;Secret Life of CEP&#8221; and that the CEP solutions today are somehow changing the way C-Level executives, and corporate America, thinks is just wishful thinking.</p>
<p>Companies don&#8217;t need to keep their strong technical solutions a secret. Like, Wow! I am using Coral8 and it is so impressive that I have to keep it TOP SECRET.  (Sorry Mark, nothing personal, you simply gave me a big red target and painted &#8220;fire when ready&#8221; on it)</p>
<p>Note:  I happen to like Coral8, and Coral8 Studio, as an event stream processing platform.</p>
<p>Back on point, I consider my laptop and cellphone more indispensable than most of the first generation rule-based stream processing engines out there today, and I am sure most CEOs agree.</p>

Recipient Social Security numbers were inadvertently exposed on the mailing labels.<br><br><span style="font-weight: bold;">Reference URL:</span><br><a href="http://www.transportation.umd.edu/parkingmailer/">University of Maryland</a> <br><a href="http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/0708/536794.html">ABC Channel 7 News</a> <br><a href="http://www.wtop.com/?sid=1442585&amp;nid=25">WTOP FM 103.5 News</a> <br><br><span style="font-weight: bold;">Report Credit:</span><br>University of Maryland<br><br><span style="font-weight: bold;">Response:</span><br>From the online sources cited above:<br><br>On July 1st, 2008, the University of Maryland’s Department of Transportation Services sent all students registered at the time, by U.S. mail, a brochure with on-campus parking information.<br><br>On July 8, 2008, the University discovered that the labels on that mailing included the addressees’ Social Security numbers.<br><span style="font-style: italic;">[Evan] Sheesh, a fraudster doesn't even have to tamper with the mail if the Social Security number is on the label.</span><br><br>The error was discovered on the morning of July 8 when calls were made to the University.<br><br>This parking mailer was sent to all individuals registered for Fall 2008 classes at the University of Maryland as of June 15, 2008.<br><br>The mailing list numbered 23,727 individuals.<br><br>In our annual effort to provide parking and transportation information to the University community, the names and addresses of all registered students was requested internally at the Department of Transportation Services for the purpose of creating mailing labels for a brochure.<br><br>This information was generated by a computer query and included names, addresses and what was believed to be University identification numbers (UIDs).<br><span style="font-style: italic;">[Evan] When writing and executing database queries, isn't it a good idea to check the results and see if the information displayed is the information you were looking for?&nbsp; I wonder if UIDs are also nine digits long like Social Security numbers are.</span><br><br>Our normal process is to remove the University ID numbers prior to mailing.<br><span style="font-style: italic;">[Evan] Is it safe to assume that "normal process" was not followed in this instance?&nbsp; If so, then why not?&nbsp; There is no mention in the school's response.</span><br><br>It was not apparent to departmental staff that these numbers not only still existed within the file, but were Social Security numbers, and not University ID numbers.<br><span style="font-style: italic;">[Evan] Not apparent?&nbsp; They were on the labels!</span><br><br>The numbers were not identified as Social Security numbers and did not show the normal spacing between digits.<br><span style="font-style: italic;">[Evan] So it would be xxxxxxxxx instead of xxx-xx-xxxx.&nbsp; What percentage of people would recognize the first set of nine digits as a SSN?</span><br><br>This mailer was sent using third class, bulk mail delivery and may not have been delivered to you yet.<br><br>Currently, there is no evidence that anyone's Social Security number has been misused.<br><br>The University apologizes and deeply regrets this unfortunate mistake.<br><br>We are initiating immediate action to ensure that this error does not recur.<br><span style="font-style: italic;">[Evan] Like what?&nbsp; Maybe train people to review their query results and follow "normal process"?</span><br><br>The University of Maryland values the critical importance of your personal information.<br><br>We strongly recommend that you take appropriate precautions to mask, black out or destroy this document after use.<br><br>In unfortunate situations like this, it is possible that dishonest people may contact you asking for personal information in the guise of offering assistance from the University.<br><span style="font-style: italic;">[Evan] Equally unfortunate is the fact that there are a lot of dishonest people.</span><br><br>Please note that the University WILL NOT contact you by phone, e-mail or in any other way requesting personal information regarding this incident.<br><br>Please do not release any personal information in response to contacts claiming to be from the University.<br><br>In response to this incident, the University, and specifically the Department of Transportation Services, has moved to severely restrict access to sensitive student and faculty/staff information; "We are notifying our present and former patients. ..."<br><br>The practice at 719 Green Valley Road Suite 305 said personal information for its physicians and other staff members also was on the stolen tape.<br><br>the case is under investigation<br><br>did not respond to inquiries about how many patients were affected, how the theft occurred and whether anything else was taken<br><br>The practice's letter said the theft had been reported to police. However, officials with the Greensboro Police Department and the Guilford County Sheriff's Office said they had no such report on file.<br><span style="font-style: italic;">[Evan] This is interesting news.</span><br><br>The data was not encrypted, but Greensboro Gynecology Associates said the stolen data isn't likely to be accessed.<br><br>"We have consulted with several computer security experts, and they have advised it is highly unlikely the tapes can be accessed because of the program used and the language (the information) is written in," according to a recording on a hotline set up to address patients' concerns.<br><span style="font-style: italic;">[Evan] Who are these several computer security "experts'?&nbsp; I hate to disagree, but...&nbsp; The assessment is based on "the program used and the language" that the archived information is written in.&nbsp; Really?&nbsp; How hard is it to obtain the necessary hardware and software to access the information?&nbsp; Someone interested in accessing the tape could conceivably flip the data protection tab on the tape (to prevent data corruption through inadvertent writes), download some of the more popular backup software programs, buy a compatible drive (stolen or on eBay), and go to town.&nbsp; Couldn't they?&nbsp; Backup Exec is a very popular backup program.&nbsp; Anyone can download a 60-day trial for free.&nbsp; More talented professionals have even more sophisticated methods of accessing data on tape. </span><br style="font-style: italic;"><br>Greensboro Gynecology Associates said they are consulting with computer security experts to prevent similar thefts in the future.<br><span style="font-style: italic;">[Evan] I kind of hope that they are not consulting with the same computer security "experts" referenced above.</span><br style="font-style: italic;"><br>"We sincerely regret and apologize that this incident occurred," the letter said<br><br><span style="font-weight: bold;">Commentary:</span><br>Many backup software solutions include the option to encrypt the written data built-in.&nbsp; Why not use it?<br><br>Greensboro Gynecology Associates has established a hotline for concerned patients.&nbsp; The phone number is (336) 544-4590.&nbsp;&nbsp; The hotline asks patients to leave their name and telephone number for a staff member to return their call. <br><br><span style="font-weight: bold;">Past Breaches:</span><br>Unknown<br></font><br>

Lompoc, near Santa Barbara, had unreasonable expectations, if you read their first and second RFPs. The first provider built a network that Lompoc found unacceptable and they bid it out for a second network to be built (some of these details are murky and some under dispute).</p>

<p>What's been clear is that after spending more than $3m, the city couldn't acquire more than a few hundred regular subscribers, about 10 percent of the point they'd need to pay expenses and pay down capital outlay. But it turns out that the backend was as important as their network deployment, IDG News Service reports.</p>

<p>The latest city network administrator brought in Aptilo Networks for backend authentication and session processing, opened the network to 15-minute free trials, and started accepted ad hoc payment. The new network guru also let outsourced contracts expire and brought customer support and other services back in house to reduce expenses and improve the feedback loop. He discovered their existing authentication system was licensed for 500 users, so that might have explained their failure to grow, too.</p>

<p>The city now has 1,000 regular users at all levels, from pay-as-you-go to monthly household subscriptions. They've revised breakeven down to 2,000 subscribers, and say they are breakeven for expenses.</p>

<p>The other problem Lompoc had, by the way, is that the cable and telephone companies didn't sit still. I exaggerate, but when Lomopoc was planning its network, it had very poor coverage for its 42,000 residents for DSL and cable modem service. When the Wi-Fi network was announced, the incumbents started pulling copper, coax, and fiber, and dramatically improved network coverage. The $3m wasn't entirely ill spent so far: it was a kind of reverse incentive to the private companies to get their act together.</p>]]></content:encoded>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[Last week's dramatic rescue of 15 hostages held by the guerrilla organization FARC was the result of months of intricate deception on the part of the Colombian government. At the center was a classic man-in-the-middle attack.

In a man-in-the-middle attack, the attacker inserts himself between two communicating parties. Both believe they're talking to each other, and the attacker can delete or modify the communications at will. </p><p><cite>The Wall Street Journal</cite> reported how this <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121518490923829025.html">gambit played out in Colombia</a>: 

<blockquote>"The plan had a chance of working because, for months, in an operation one army officer likened to a 'broken telephone,' military intelligence had been able to convince Ms. Betancourt's captor, Gerardo Aguilar, a guerrilla known as 'Cesar,' that he was communicating with his top bosses in the guerrillas' seven-man secretariat. Army intelligence convinced top guerrilla leaders that they were talking to Cesar. In reality, both were talking to army intelligence."</blockquote>

This ploy worked because Cesar and his guerrilla bosses didn't know one another well. They didn't recognize one anothers' voices, and didn't have a friendship or shared history that could have tipped them off about the ruse. Man-in-the-middle is defeated by context, and the FARC guerrillas didn't have any.

And that's why man-in-the-middle, abbreviated MITM in the computer-security community, is such a problem online: Internet communication is often <a href="http://www.monkey.org/~dugsong/dsniff/">stripped of any context</a>. There's no way to <a href="http://www.oxid.it/">recognize someone's face</a>. There's no way to <a href="http://ettercap.sourceforge.net/">recognize someone's voice</a>. When you receive an e-mail purporting to come from a person or organization, you have no idea who actually sent it. When you visit a website, you have no idea if you're really visiting that website. We all like to pretend that we know who we're communicating with -- and for the most part, of course, there isn't any attacker inserting himself into our communications -- but in reality, we don't. And there are lots of <a href="http://sourceforge.net/projects/airjack/">hacker tools</a> that exploit this <a href="http://www.wsniff.com/">unjustified trust</a>, and <a href="http://www.theta44.org/karma/">implement MITM attacks</a>.

Even with context, it's still possible for MITM to fool both sides -- because electronic communications are often intermittent. Imagine that one of the FARC guerrillas became suspicious about who he was talking to. So he asks a question about their shared history as a test: "What did we have for dinner that time last year?" or something like that. On the telephone, the attacker wouldn't be able to answer quickly, so his ruse would be discovered.  But e-mail conversation isn't synchronous. The attacker could simply pass that question through to the other end of the communications, and when he got the answer back, he would be able to reply.

This is the way MITM attacks work against web-based financial systems. A bank demands authentication from the user: a password, a one-time code from a token or whatever. The attacker sitting in the middle receives the request from the bank and passes it to the user.  The user responds to the attacker, who passes that response to the bank. Now the bank assumes it is talking to the legitimate user, and the attacker is free to send transactions directly to the bank. This kind of attack completely bypasses any <a href="http://www.schneier.com/crypto-gram-0503.html#2">two-factor authentication mechanisms</a>, and is becoming a more popular identity-theft tactic.

There are cryptographic solutions to MITM attacks, and there are secure web protocols that implement them. Many of them require shared secrets, though, making them useful only in situations where people already know and trust one another.

The NSA-designed <a href="http://www.fas.org/irp/program/security/_work/stu3.html">STU-III and STE</a> secure telephones solve the MITM problem by embedding the identity of each phone together with its key. (The NSA creates all keys and is trusted by everyone, so this works.) When two phones talk to each other securely, they exchange keys and display the other phone's identity on a screen. Because the phone is in a secure location, the user now knows who he is talking to, and if the phone displays another organization -- as it would if there were a MITM attack in progress -- he should hang up.

Zfone, a <a href="http://zfoneproject.com/faq.html#mitm">secure VoIP system</a>, protects against MITM attacks with a short authentication string. After two Zfone terminals exchange keys, both computers display a four-character string. The users are supposed to manually verify that both strings are the same -- "my screen says 5C19; what does yours say?" -- to ensure that the phones are communicating directly with each other and not with an MITM. The <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/21746901@N08/2275723713/">AT&T TSD-3600</a> worked similarly.

This sort of protection is embedded in SSL, although no one uses it. As it is normally used, SSL provides an encrypted communications link to whoever is at the other end: bank and phishing site alike. And the better phishing sites create valid SSL connections, so as to more effectively fool users. But if the user wanted to, he could manually <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/protect/yourself/phishing/spoof.mspx">check the SSL certificate</a> to see if it was issued to "National Bank of Trustworthiness" or "Two Guys With a Computer in Nigeria."  
 
No one does, though, because you have to both remember and be willing to do the work. (The browsers could make this easier if they wanted to, but they don’t seem to want to.) In the real world, you can easily tell a branch of your bank from a money changer on a street corner. But on the internet, a phishing site can be easily made to look like your bank's legitimate website. Any method of telling the two apart takes work. And that's the first step to fooling you with a MITM attack.
 
Man-in-the-middle isn't new, and it doesn't have to be technological. But the internet makes the attacks easier and more powerful, and that's not going to change anytime soon.

Dear Friend of Freedom,

In a move that I can only describe as cowardice, Congress
just passed legislation meant to immunize telephone
companies for their illegal, disloyal, and irresponsible
behavior. EFF has been fighting against telecom immunity,
and we need your help to bring the fight to the next level:

Two and a half years ago, EFF sued AT&amp;T on behalf of its
customers, seeking to hold the telecom giant responsible
for its craven complicity in the White House&#8217;s illegal
warrantless wiretapping program.

Since then, the phone companies and their allies in
Washington have spent tens of millions of dollars lobbying
Congress to grant them retroactive immunity. They ran
ridiculous fear-mongering attack ads against any politician
who dared to oppose them. President Bush threatened to veto
any bill that allowed EFF&#8217;s lawsuit to continue.

Yesterday, Congress completely capitulated to the
President&#8217;s threats and voted to let the telecoms off the
hook. If the telecoms are not held accountable, the
administration will remain unchecked in its warrantless
wiretapping of innocent Americans. This must stop!

We need your help to take the fight to the next level.
We&#8217;re going to challenge Congress&#8217;s unconstitutional grant
of immunity in our case against AT&amp;T. We&#8217;re going to fight
for a congressional repeal of immunity in the next
Congress. And we&#8217;re going to file a new lawsuit against the

Last week's dramatic rescue of 15 hostages held by the guerrilla organization FARC was the result of months of intricate deception on the part of the Colombian government. At the center was a classic man-in-the-middle attack.

<p>Much has been written lately about annoying sales tactics and how many in the security field try to duck vendor calls.&nbsp; Believe it or not, I get my share of annoying sales calls as well.&nbsp; Whether it is the great conference that is being organized with all of the CIOs that I would ever want to speak to or the latest, greatest new product that is going to make my life easier and define the road to riches, I am swamped with spam telephone calls (on my cell phone no less) every day.&nbsp; </p>

<p>One thing that I have come to see is that many of these unsolicited calls come in with an unknown caller ID. I don't mean no name for entity, but no number either.&nbsp; Most of these people don't leave a voice mail either, they just keep calling until the get an answer.&nbsp; My view is that if the caller has to go to the effort of hiding their name and number, than they have something to hide and are not being upfront.&nbsp; I don't want to do business with anyone like that. I think this just puts two strikes against anyone calling.&nbsp; Why are you hiding who you are?&nbsp; Are you ashamed of what you are doing?</p>

<p>So here is my Shimel rule on sales calls. If your caller ID does not identify you, than I don't want to talk to you!</p>
