I was pleased to read the Paul Vincent’s post, TIBCO BusinessEvents 3.0. TIBCO has always had a forward thinking vision for distributed computing and this release of BE 3.0 is another step in the right direction. TIBCO now has the only commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) event processing platform on the market that supports distributed event processing, multi-agent architectures, distributed object caching, extensibility, continuous queries, state management and state-of-the-art rules.

Even thought TIBCO’s BusinessEvents does not yet support Bayesian Classifiers, Artificial Neural Networks and other advanced decision support algorithms, it is just a matter of time before TIBCO will add these advanced features “out of the box”. On the other hand, the extensible nature of TIBCO’s BE makes it possible to add probabalistic computing functionality, however this requires quite a lot of programming and integration work.

When I see a great release like this for TIBCO, it makes me a little nostalgic for “the good old days” travelling the world in the front of the aircraft for TIBCO. TIBCO has a rich and diverse customer base. This customer base includes financial services companies; however, TIBCO is much less dependent on financial services than other event processing companies. So, with TIBCO you not only get great technology, but rock-solid stability in an unstable and uncertain business world.

As a side note, an S&P analyst recently downgraded TIBCO’s stock (TIBX), primarily due to chao in the financial services sector. Because of TIBCO’s global reach and stability, plus forward vision, advanced technologies and many years of commericial success, the S&P downgrade will create a buying opportunity for TIBCO stock.

Bokhari referenced TIBCO’s relatively high exposure to financial services and telecom companies and dependence on large deals. Bokhari noted that TIBCO will report Aug 2008 quarter results on September 25. She estimates revenue of $154 million and an operating EPS of 6 cents. For the November 2008 fiscal year, she cut his sales forecast to $650 million from $663 million, with EPS dropping 2 cents to 34 cents. For FY ‘09, Bokhari drops another penny to 44 cents. Bokhari cuts her target price on TIBCO stock to $6.50, from $8.

Paul Vincent, ex-colleague at TIBCO, kindly responds to A Brief Introduction to Blackboard Architectures with Blackboards for Complex Event Processing. Paul correctly mentions that TIBCO’s BusinessEvents software is an excellent scheduling component in a blackboard systems architecture.

However, I should briefly clarify Paul’s note that “blackboard systems historically used a single memory model (i.e. multiple threads or processes using a single machine’s memory model)“.

In fact, there were many blackboard systems, some more than a decade old, that used a distributed memory data-model. What I think Paul meant to say, and my apologies to Paul for being so literal, is that “blackboard systems originally used a single memory model (i.e. multiple threads or processes using a single machine’s memory model)”

John McManus, former CTO of NASA, wrote an excellent PhD dissertation in 1992, Design and Analysis Techniques for Concurrent Blackboard Systems. John’s thesis, now more than 16 years old, examined many details of concurrent blackboards where memory is distributed. For example, refer to Figure 2.3. Distributed Blackboard System with Distributed Blackboard Data Structure, page 36 of John’s dissertation.

Quoting directly from page 37 of John’s disseration;

Rice, Aiello and Nii [20] present several options for gaining speedups in a distributed blackboard system.

1) Eliminate the centralized scheduling mechanism

2) Optimize system design for a distributed memory, message-passing hardware

3) Distribute the data across the blackboard to reduce hotspots

Quoting further from the same page;

Poligon [21] is based on a distributed memory hardware model when each processor is viewed as a blackboard node. They define a blackboard node as follows: “a blackboard node is a process on a processor, surrounded by a collection of processors able to service its requests to execute rules.” [22] The implicit assumption in this definition is that all knowledge sources are rule–based systems. This assumption may severely limit the performance of systems implemented using Poligon, and limits the types of problems it is suited to address.

In Blackboards for Complex Event Processing, Paul concludes,

“One suspects the blackboard systems domain and terminology is overdue some updates thanks to developments in the Complex Event Processing space.”

If you look at the historical literature, I would say that the following restatement is more accurate:

“The CEP domain and terminology is overdue some updates because folks working in CEP did not reference or incorporate the advanced event processing prior art in a number of very important areas, blackboard systems being only one.”

On the other hand, commercial off-the-shelf rule-processing technology such as TIBCO’s BusinessEvents (BE), advances the ability to economically implement myriad complex problems that blackboard systems are designed to address.

Paul Vincent’s blog post CEP: hype, or the next best thing since sliced bread? mispresents the dialog going on the the CEP community.

First of all, we have not read anyone saying that CEP is “mere hype” as Paul Vincent has distorted the discussion. What people have have said is that CEP is overhyped. There is a huge difference in “Mere Hype” (Paul Vincent’s misinformation) and “Overhyped”.

In addition, Paul goes a step further and calls the entire discussion, one he did not participate in, ”over-discussed (but ultimately uninteresting)” as a sideline observer who has offered nothing to the dialog. TIBCO’s customers have not released a CEP announcement in a very long time and they are not contributing to the critical technical discussions.

Instead of sniping at community discussions on the blogosphere, as a lead-in for a blog post, why not offer the details of a TIBCO customer use case? Also, instead of misquoting the community discussions, why not be accurate, not misleading and condescending? How about getting into the details of TIBCO Event Processing Language? Maybe discussing the plans, if any, for the integration of Insightful and Spotfire with BusinessEvents?

I greatly admire TIBCO and their technology, but Paul’s post CEP: hype, or the next best thing since sliced bread? is both misleading and inaccurate. We expect more out of the TIBCO bloggers, for example, a strong public customer reference detailing a CEP use case. Something we have not seen on the TIBCO blog.

PS: A quick Google search reveals that the only person on the net calling CEP “Mere Hype” is Paul Vincent.

Everyone who follows The CEP Blog and my vision for the business use of CEP understands how much energy and passion I have put into explaining why the crude time-series analysis of streaming data cannot possibly solve the vast marjority of complex business problems CEP must address.

TIBCO’s acquisition of Insightful show just how serious TIBCO is about working to make the vision of “Predictive Business” a reality. TIBCO means business, and a large part of what that means is helping customers solve their most challenging problems, which can be summarized in CEP-speak as detecting opportunities and threats, in near real-time, as a core corporate competency.

If you spend a few moments on the Insightful web site, you will find a treasure of documentation that discusses a gold mine of advanced statistical analytics that can be used in a number of mission critical applications.

This is the class of analytics that form the backbone of complex event processing. In fact, as I have often pointed out (to the dismay of some of my CEP colleagues), any software company that discusses CEP and does not support or advocate advanced analytics are selling snake oil. TIBCO obviously understands the difference between snake oil, smoke-and-mirrors marketing, and the technology it takes to solve real operational problems.

My hats off and warm congratulations to the team in Palo Alto for demonstrating, yet again, why TIBCO is committed to solving real customer problems with realistic solutions.

Paul Vincent of TIBCO talks about agents in his post, CEP and Agents…

At the core, TIBCO’s BusinessEvents is RETE-based rules engine and rules engines are well suited for scheduling problems. This makes perfect sense, since many of TIBCO’s customers deploy BusinessEvents in scheduling-oriented, not detection-oriented, solutions.

It begs to be pointed out, however, that scheduling is only one component of a CEP architecture.

Normally, the scheduling component of a distributed event processing architecture manages the intelligent scheduling of the sharing of data between distributed agents that are running a variety of analytics.

Simply stated, all agents are not rules engines; however, rules engines are often used to schedule the cooperation between analytical agents in a distributed agent-based architecture.

Sandy Carter, IBM’s vice president of SOA and WebSphere strategies, said something in IBM Buys AptSoft To Boost BPM-SOA Line I completely agree with, relative to most of the technologies folks are calling “CEP” these days:

“In the marketplace today, everybody talks about complex event processing,” Carter said. “We actually are trying to rename that category, because we believe the real value is in business event processing, with a focus on the business.”

For example, none of the current CEP vendors are doing “complex event processing” as many of us have said, repeatedly.

TIBCO and AptSoft, for example, are examples of companies that are really implementing, business event processing. You can easily confirm this in TIBCO’s press release, TIBCO BusinessEvents 2.2 now shipping…, where Paul Vincent blogs:

The main change with this [TIBCO BusinessEvents 2.2] release is the inclusion of new deployment options:

+ deploy BusinessEvents within a BusinessWorks container: great for using BusinessEvents as a decision engine for SOA integration processes, choreography, transaction flow monitoring, etc, or for using BusinessWorks as a ruleflow tool.

+ deploy BusinessEvents as a BusinessWorks container: great for exploiting SOA orchestration and services under the control of CEP, such as invoking complex adapters.

This is absolutely, “business event processing” just as IBM’s Sandy Carter stated, correctly in my opinion, not CEP.

The same is true for event stream processing (ESP). ESP technology from companies like Apama, Coral8 and StreamBase, is much more closely aligned with the “business event processing” than anything that is truly CEP.

I was wondering when IBM would actually jump into the event processing market.

Well, it was announced today that IBM will acquire Aptsoft, adding an event stream processing (ESP) platform to the IBM WebSphere porfolio. IBM will also gain AptSoft’s event processing reference customers. This was a smart move by IBM.

Oracle is acquiring BEA which uses Esper under the hood, another stream processing engine.

However, AptSoft has a more advanced user interface and graphical design-time environment when compared to the Oracle/BEA/Esper platform,; so the IBM/WebSphere/AptSoft offering will propel IBM to the top of the event stream processing market.

This also means the ESP market leaders will be Progress Apama and IBM. It is a sure bet that IBM will compete directly with Apama in the financial services sector with their acquisition of AptSoft.

Now, it’s TIBCO’s turn to acquire an ESP platform to compliment their process-driven event processing offering.
