The Gartner Data Center Conference kicked off this morning in Las Vegas. Despite the completely packed plane coming out here, Vegas seems quieter and not so crowded. The bartender at Wolfgang Puck’s Bistro told me they were looking forward to the 1800 people coming to this show to fill the hotel up. As we’ve noted, the economic crisis is impacting business travel all around.

22% of the attendees at Data Center come from the public sector and government, with 44% coming from very large enterprises of 20K+ employees.

During the Gartner IOM conference in June, some of the most interesting info coming out of it was the quick polls of the audience on a variety of infrastructure and operations management topics. What are enterprises doing? Where are they headed? What’s important to them? Here are some quick takes from the opening session:

1) What is the largest data center challenge that you currently face?

Smaller Budgets: 21%

Power & Cooling: 20%

Dealing with the Rate of Technology Change: 15%

Aligning Activities with the Business: 15%

Modernizing Legacy Applications: 10%

Lack of Data Center Space because of Equipment Spread: 9%

How to Source IT Services: 5%

How to Find and Retain Talent: 5%

Well, it’s taken almost a year to be “official”, but the National Bureau of Economic Research just announced that the US has been in a recession since December of 2007. It should come as a surprise to no one that dealing with smaller budgets is top of mind, even for the predominantly larger enterprises attending here.

2) What projects will receive the most funding in 2009?

Virtualization/Consolidation: 31%

Data Center Facilities – new builds: 17%

IT Operations Process Improvement: 12%

IT Modernization: 7%

Green IT: 5%

Virtualization and (server) consolidation projects are clearly a priority for larger enterprises in 2009. What’s interesting here is the relatively very low priority of Green IT projects – in spite of the importance to attendees of getting power and cooling costs under control. Perhaps there’s a gap here between what’s often the hype of Green IT and practical considerations for data center managers when it comes to power and cooling management.

3) Where are you with server consolidation projects?

No Plans: 3%

Looking at it now and will start in next 2 years: 13%

In process now: 58%

Have already completed server consolidation project: 26%

Larger enterprises are consolidating servers with a quarter of attendees already having gone through the process at least once. And according to poll #2, this trend will definitely continue.

Art of Information Security endorses Dan Houser for (ISC)² Board of Directors

The CISSP is undoubtably one of the most, if not the most, important professional certifications in Information Security. Many organizations and practitioners rely on it as evidence of a solid foundation and track record in Information Security. But the CISSP is only one of the many ways that the (ISC)² attempts to fulfill its mission of developing the Information Security profession.

Board membership is a role of governance, guidance, and passion. Let’s briefly explore how Dan’s track record and past contributions demonstrate his qualification for this post, and possibly your vote.

Passion

Dan is someone who has a passion for promoting and developing the talent needed to continue to grow and mature our profession. Anyone who has seen Dan speak at conferences, local chapter meetings, or in one of his classes knows how passionate Dan is! But anyone who takes the time to approach him knows that he is no ideologue or zealot; Dan is always interested in improving his own understanding, and then sharing that knowledge with others.

Dan has a long track record as a contributor - as a “giver” - to the profession. In addition to teaching over a dozen CISSP review courses, he has also served on multiple (ISC)² committees, is one of the authors of the ISSAP Body of Knowledge (cryptography), and has published primary research on professional certifications. He is also the founder of the monthly Columbus, Ohio Information Security MBA (Masters of Beer Appreciation) meeting - a professional roundtable that attracts practitioners from across the state.

Governance and Guidance

In addition to past experience serving on (ISC)² committees, which I assume led to the current board’s nomination, Dan has served on numerous Boards of Directors including local and regional community organizations, ISSA chapters, and several Toastmasters clubs.

Personal Experiences

I have known Dan for almost three yeas. Dan and I have collaborated on a number or projects, including a half-day Cryptographic Controls Seminar and a full-day Identity Management Architecture class. It is my feeling that when you collaborate, work closely, and travel with someone, you really get to know them. You get to do more than hear about their College Sweethearts (which, for Dan, is Rebecca, his wife of 21 years), but you also get to understand their ethics, how they really conduct themselves, how they deal with stress, etc.

Given the entire picture, the understanding that I have of Dan Houser, I can think of no one better suited to representing, guiding and developing the (ISC)². I have voted for Dan, and I hope that you will consider doing the same.

Here is the voting link for (ISC)²: https://webportal.isc2.org/custom/votenow.aspx

Cheers, Erik

Happy Halloween!

What an interesting time to hold a technology conference. The DLA Piper Global Technology Leaders Summit last week brought together CXOs from Amazon, Walmart.com, Stanford, Safeway, Microsoft, Sun, Cisco and others to discuss the state of IT in general and how the economy is impacting it. Some highlights:

“Cloud computing for large enterprises is a dead duck, in the opinion of several venture capital firms.”

“The current slowdown in the U.S. macroeconomy is definitely going to hurt the IT industry, as it will most of the nation’s businesses, for at least the next year and most likely into the next two years.”

NetApp cancelled its first user conference slated for 2009 citing economy-driven restrictions on business travel.

We recently wrote about the possible upside for MSPs in this economic downtown. A survey from EquaTerra of more than 200 outsourcing service suppliers announced that “more than 40 percent of those polled had seen increased demand levels, despite the economic downturn.” The survey suggests that outsourcing projects are changing, with a strong focus on quick return on investment replacing longer-term initiatives to improve end-to-end business processes, according to InfoWorld. So as we saw during our own surveys this year, it looks like IT will spend time and money against the practical projects that should and could get done and not taking on ITIL and CMDB projects.

Jonathan Schwartz as a puppet talking about open source and his ponytail. The driest Sesame Street take-off you’ll ever see. Check out the video here. For those of you playing a drinking game at home, “ponytail”.

Denise Dubie posted a follow up to her article Novell’s Managed Objects buy, and shared insights from different commenters, including yours truly.

One of our favorites, the IT Skeptic was featured on John Willis’ blog this week, answering some questions about CMDB, ITSMF and more. He also provided his insight into IBM Tivoli, although he “tries to stay non-partisan”.

Inexplicable. HP posted Halloween-themed videos about datacenters on YouTube this week. Unlike the great IBM videos about the mainframe, these videos speak techno-babble without tempering the lingo with being funny or tongue-in-cheek. Various frightening creatures share information on service management processes and discuss virtualization techniques to help consolidate hardware. Scary.

Now, couple an afternoon of binge drinking with hanky-panky on the beach in a muslim country and you have the makings of a jail-house cocktail.

This type of behaviour is one of the reasons why we have decided to conduct executive security training in the U.A.E.
