My Grandmother always told me that a lucky person can count the really good friends they have on one hand, but a small amount of good friends far outweigh having many acquaintances. That was proven to me once again this weekend.  Ever since before I had my 2 sons, I had dreams of taking my children to both a Pittsburgh Steeler game and a NY Yankee game. Last year I had a chance to take Landon and Bradley to Pittsburgh and see a Steeler game.  With this being the last year for the old Yankee Stadium, I wanted to take the boys to see the Yankees at home and in the old stadium. 

Getting tickets to a game at Yankee Stadium is not cheap.  In looking around StubHub, for a hundred bucks a ticket (which is all I was willing to pay), the best I was going to do was out in the bleachers somewhere. But I figured it was better than nothing and was going to go for it.  That was when I called my best buddy from college Tyler to see if he wanted to go with us.  Tyler still lives in NY, actually he has an apt in Trump Palace and works in advertising for a large company, handling one of the very biggest accounts.  When I told him what I was looking at buying he said to hold on and let him see what he could do.

Well Tyler came through big time.  Not sure which vendor he got them from, but we had 6th row box seats behind third base, tickets to the Stadium Club, free parking (didn???t use it as we took the subway) and to top it off, Tyler was staying at his friends place and insisted we stay in his place at Trump. 

The boys and I had a blast hanging out in the city, going to Dylan???s candy store, the Empire State Building and then heading up to the Stadium.  I am sure it will be a time both they and I will never forget.  Like the commercial says:

1. 3 round trip airline tickets from Florida to NY ??? $750.00

2. 1 night in a hotel in NYC - $400.00

3. 3 field box seats to a Yankee game - $1000.00

4. A fried like Tyler to make it all happen for free (I used miles for the airfare) and give the kids this kind of memory??? PRICELESS!

I’ll take your 6 centers of excellence and uh, raise you 2 data centers. Following up on the HP announcement that they’ve partnered with Yahoo and Intel to create cloud computing Centers of Excellence this week, IBM said they were building out 2 data centers to accommodate the coming cloud computing resources need. I should say that IBM had already announced their “partnership” with Google to provide services for the cloud back in May. Who’s left to partner with on cloud computing? Microsoft and Amazon?

Packet Trap Networks recently conducted a survey of network engineers and IT professionals who perform network management duties inside companies with more than 100 employees. Out of the 800 engineers surveyed, 49 percent stated that they did not have a comprehensive network management system in place – showing a need for solutions focused on the mid-market – i.e., the right features at reasonable prices. If you remember, Sevcik and Wetzel (not a vendor!) conducted their own survey on application performance management and had similar findings but a rather different answer… (hint – starts with “E” and ends in “7”)

Is open-source software more secure? After all thousands of eyes are better than a handful, right? Well, according to a report sponsored by Fortify Software, that’s just not the case. Roger Thornton, founder and CTO of Fortify Software, adds that the underlying problem is “a lack of understanding and collaboration between developers and security experts – today each are talking past each other when it comes to security.”

Speaking of the Yankees, they have made a few moves for the pennant run.  In addition to their own trade with the Pirates to get Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte, they pulled off a great deal yesterday getting Pudge Rodriguez to fill in as catcher for Jorge Posada.  This could be a huge deal for the Yankees.  They gave up Kyle Farnsworth, who while threw well this year, gave up home runs like candy.  I am flying up to NY with my two sons tomorrow and will be at the Stadium tomorrow night to watch the Yanks play the Angels, who also made a big trade for the Braves Mark Teixeira.

Another future hall of famer, Ken Griffey, Jr was also traded to the White Sox today.  Wow! What a day in baseball. I can’t wait to sit in the temple that is Yankee Stadium with my two boys tomorrow. It is like a dream come true, similar to taking them to a Steeler game last year.  With all of the action going on around baseball it is also a great time to do it.

Ah, its almost August.  Football training camps are open and the Yankees and Red Sox are battling. Does it get any better?  For most of this year I thought the Yankees were going to be out of it this year and content to have a rebuilding year.  We have several veteran players who past their prime and whose contracts are up after this year.  We have a some great young talent that need to grow into their potential.  It looked like the Bosox and Tampa Rays were going to run away with the division and wild card this year.

But like inevitable turning of the seasons, sometime after July 4th and then the All Star break, the Yankees beginninng their drive. Those old bones warm up in the heat of the summer and the bats come alive. This year the pitching is carrying them too.  Old pros Andy Pettite and Mike Mussina are joined by Jobba Chamberlin.  Mariano Rivera is still the best closer in baseball.  Just like old times the Yanks went out and fleeced some 2nd division team for a bunch of minor leaguers and added a quality hitter and pitcher right before the trade deadline.  Look around and we are one game behind the Red Sox for the wild card slot and only three games behind the Rays for first place!

I still think Tampa is going to stumble and it will come down to the Sox and the Yanks. Just the way it is supposed to be. I am heading up to NY next Friday, taking my sons to the shrine that is Yankee Stadium to see it in person in its last year.  The rest of the baseball season is going to be very exciting.  Again, just the way it is supposed to be!

This story has a happy ending, though. A day after The New York Post published this story, Yankee Stadium reversed its ban. Now, if only the Post had that same affect on airport security.

One of the cool things about the first dot com bubble was the "ebay millionaire". These were people who built businesses around selling goods at auction on ebay.  There has been much written and said about the methods of these people and certainly it was a big attraction to people selling on ebay.  I had an interesting plane ride home today where I met someone and discovered todays equivalent. I call it the StubHub millionaire. It  is a testament to American ingenuity and shows that given the tools, people will find a way to exploit and make money.

Up until fairly recently you bought tickets to sporting events and other entertainment from a box office or ticket agent such as ticketron.  The "after market" in ticket sales or scalping as it was called in NY was often times illegal.  There were though some legal ticket brokers that you could buy tickets from. Now with the advent of StubHub and similar type of ticket reselling outlets on the web though, the infrastructure is in place for anyone to sell tickets on line.  You would think that most of these people selling tickets were people who had either extra tickets to an event or perhaps a season ticket holder looking to unload some tickets to help defray the costs. Not the case!

There is a now a whole class of businessman who buys season tickets to multiple teams, sports and cities and than uses outlets like StubHub and others to sell these tickets.  The guy I spoke to today had season tickets to 6 different NFL teams, 3 major league baseball teams and multiple basketball and hockey teams.  Many of his tickets are sold months and weeks before the event. If any are left within 14 days of the event he puts them on ebay.  His average mark up is about 40 to 50% of face value, but by buying season tickets he pays below face, so his actual margin is closer to 60 to 70%. He keeps a few tickets for him and his family to go to a few games a year. 

This started as a hobby for him with Yankee season tickets, but he has done an analysis and compared to what he would make investing that money in the market, he has come out way, way ahead.  He thinks that on a 12,500 investment, he makes about 40k!  That is not bad.  This year when all is said and done he will make six figure income from the resale of tickets he bought.  Think about it, no office or anything.  Just list your tickets and let people buy them.  Take some of the money and buy more tickets.

So it is quite an exciting Fathers Day weekend here at the Shimel house.  On Friday my oldest son Landon, 8, had braces put on his top teeth. I know that 8 is early for braces, but evidently today they do this as a "Phase 1", so that hopefully he won't need them as long later on.  Seeing my little boy come out of the room with braces was quite a sight.  Unlike the trauma that kids had about braces when I was younger, he thought it was awesome.  The picture to the left are not his braces.  Landon's are black and gold, Steeler braces. In 6 weeks they will change them to Yankee blue and white.  Braces have certainly come a long way since I was a kid.  But my son Landon has come a long way too.  Looking at him with his braces and talking to the office staff I realized that the little, fuzzy red headed baby we brought home from the hospital almost 9 years ago now has grown into quite a boy. Where is the little toddler that I would toss a sponge ball to underhand and tell him to use two hands to catch? Could this kid with the catchers mitt catching everything I throw at him and firing it back to me be that baby? 

Saturday is a day filled with both boys. I am taking Landon and Bradley to breakfast and than off to Baseball City to practice our hitting and pitching. Then Bradley has a birthday party he is invited to and Landon and I will go swimming.

Sunday Landon has a travel baseball team game at 10am.  Landon was selected for the team because of the great season he had in Little League and is now in tournaments for the next few weeks. Than we are all going to visit my Uncle and Aunt for Fathers Day at the house near the water with a pool.

I could not think of a better way to spend my Fathers Day weekend. My mother-in-law always used to say that she was the richest woman in the world because of the treasure that were her children.  When I was younger I laughed but would have taken the cash.  As I have grown older and have had a chance to watch my boys grow up and have come to understand what it truly is to be a Father, I know that she was right.  There is nothing like the love of a child and watching, helping and sharing in their adventure that is life.

To all of you celebrating Fathers Day this year whether as a Dad with your own kids or with your own Dad, congratulations and savor every minute of it. Happy Fathers Day!
