Every year my Dad and I go to see a Red Sox series. Last weekend was this year's trip and we went to Chicago to see the World Champion Boston Red Sox (saying that never gets old) play the White Sox. Of course, while you are in Chicago you have to see Wrigley Field, and we really lucked out. This weekend was Red Sox versus the White Sox (the battle of the Soxes they used to call it on Channel 38) on the southside and northside featured Cubs versus Cardinals! The last four World Series winners in town on the same weekend (Red Sox 04, 07, White Sox 05, Cards 06).

We learned several things- first in heaven the Cubs play the Red Sox in the World Series. Those ballparks are true gems. (In hell its probably the Yankees versus Phillies). Also, the people on the southside and northside *really* have a rivalry going. Its basically Boston v NY but they live in the same town! Here is one example from the southside

One of the great things about Wrigley (and there are many despite what southsiders say), is that its in the middle of a real neighborhood

Epicenter of Cub universe

Lots of action before and after game time, lots of people wandering around with gloves catching batting practices homers outside the stadium...err Field. Key point - Wrigley is a field, not a Stadium. Also Fenway is a Park. The Greek root of the word "paradise", means "enclosed green space", not concreteopolis

Wrigley is baseball Mecca

The greatest Cub of all, Ernie Banks, was our touchstone for the day - "Let's Play Two." we started at Wrigley for the day game (Zambrano got shelled) and then got crosstown for the night game.

To pull this off the L is your friend. As several Chicagoans pointed out, they are the only city that can have a true subway series, because the Red Line services both the White Sox and Cubs, whereas Mets-Yankees involves numerous transfers and so on.

We got to US Cellular Field which is fine but a shadow of Wrigley and absolutely nothing good to eat. Luckily we had Daisuke Matsuzaka on the hill

Before every game, Big Papi holds court in center with some players from the other team, he is to be a very popular guy. Ozzie Guillen told him before the series that with Manny gone, he wouldn't see a pitch to hit all weekend (ps. he did and crushed a bases loaded double)

The question we got most was - what about the Manny trade? His replacement strikes out a lot, but is otherwise a promising player

The Red Sox and White Sox share a little history, most especially Pudge Fisk who hit the famous homer in the 75 world series for the Red Sox and then had a great career for the White Sox (actually played more games for Chicago than Boston, but went into Cooperstown with a B on his hat)

Red Sox won, hanging out in Wrigley was an even bigger highlight, and Chicago is a beautiful city to visit, by far the most accessible of the big US cities. Also, lots of good places to eat courtesy of Thomas Ptacek.

That was proven to me once again this weekend. Ever since before I had my 2 sons, I had dreams of taking my children to both a Pittsburgh Steeler game and a NY Yankee game. Last year I had a chance to take Landon and Bradley to Pittsburgh and see a Steeler game. With this being the last year for the old Yankee Stadium, I wanted to take the boys to see the Yankees at home and in the old stadium.

Getting tickets to a game at Yankee Stadium is not cheap. In looking around StubHub, for a hundred bucks a ticket (which is all I was willing to pay), the best I was going to do was out in the bleachers somewhere. But I figured it was better than nothing and was going to go for it. That was when I called my best buddy from college Tyler to see if he wanted to go with us. Tyler still lives in NY, actually he has an apt in Trump Palace and works in advertising for a large company, handling one of the very biggest accounts. When I told him what I was looking at buying he said to hold on and let him see what he could do.

Well Tyler came through big time. Not sure which vendor he got them from, but we had 6th row box seats behind third base, tickets to the Stadium Club, free parking (didn???t use it as we took the subway) and to top it off, Tyler was staying at his friends place and insisted we stay in his place at Trump.

The boys and I had a blast hanging out in the city, going to Dylan???s candy store, the Empire State Building and then heading up to the Stadium. I am sure it will be a time both they and I will never forget. Like the commercial says:

1. 3 round trip airline tickets from Florida to NY ??? $750.00

2. 1 night in a hotel in NYC - $400.00

3. 3 field box seats to a Yankee game - $1000.00

4. A fried like Tyler to make it all happen for free (I used miles for the airfare) and give the kids this kind of memory??? PRICELESS!

Thanks Tyler!

In exchange they get from the Pirates, Jason Bay. A few other players involved, but who cares. Does this mean the Sox are giving up on this season? As a Yankee fan I can’t tell you how happy I am not to see Manny so many times a year. I also think Joe Torre will do a great job of managing Manny out in LA. Good luck to Manny. Though he killed us for years, I respected his talent.

Speaking of the Yankees, they have made a few moves for the pennant run. In addition to their own trade with the Pirates to get Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte, they pulled off a great deal yesterday getting Pudge Rodriguez to fill in as catcher for Jorge Posada. This could be a huge deal for the Yankees. They gave up Kyle Farnsworth, who while threw well this year, gave up home runs like candy. I am flying up to NY with my two sons tomorrow and will be at the Stadium tomorrow night to watch the Yanks play the Angels, who also made a big trade for the Braves Mark Teixeira.

Another future hall of famer, Ken Griffey, Jr was also traded to the White Sox today. Wow! What a day in baseball. I can’t wait to sit in the temple that is Yankee Stadium with my two boys tomorrow. It is like a dream come true, similar to taking them to a Steeler game last year. With all of the action going on around baseball it is also a great time to do it.

Ah, its almost August. Football training camps are open and the Yankees and Red Sox are battling. Does it get any better? For most of this year I thought the Yankees were going to be out of it this year and content to have a rebuilding year. We have several veteran players who past their prime and whose contracts are up after this year. We have a some great young talent that need to grow into their potential. It looked like the Bosox and Tampa Rays were going to run away with the division and wild card this year.

But like inevitable turning of the seasons, sometime after July 4th and then the All Star break, the Yankees beginninng their drive. Those old bones warm up in the heat of the summer and the bats come alive. This year the pitching is carrying them too. Old pros Andy Pettite and Mike Mussina are joined by Jobba Chamberlin. Mariano Rivera is still the best closer in baseball. Just like old times the Yanks went out and fleeced some 2nd division team for a bunch of minor leaguers and added a quality hitter and pitcher right before the trade deadline. Look around and we are one game behind the Red Sox for the wild card slot and only three games behind the Rays for first place!

I still think Tampa is going to stumble and it will come down to the Sox and the Yanks. Just the way it is supposed to be. I am heading up to NY next Friday, taking my sons to the shrine that is Yankee Stadium to see it in person in its last year. The rest of the baseball season is going to be very exciting. Again, just the way it is supposed to be!

They's at Yankee Stadium: The team contends that sunscreen has long been on the list of stadium contraband, but there is no mention of it on the Yankee Web site
Four weeks ago, Stadium officials...

They's <a href="http://www.nypost.com/seven/07222008/news/regionalnews/sunblockheads__at_the_stadium_120930.htm"confiscating sunscreen at Yankee Stadium:

The team contends that sunscreen has long been on the list of stadium contraband, but there is no mention of it on the Yankee Web site.

Four weeks ago, Stadium officials decided that sunscreen of all sizes and varieties would not be permitted, a security supervisor told The Post before last night's game.

"There have been a lot of complaints," he said. "We tell them to apply once and then throw it out."

For fans who bring babies or young children to cheer on the home team, the guard had suggested they "beg" to take the sunblock in.

Seeing the giant bag full of confiscated sunscreen Saturday, one steaming Yankee fan asked whether he could take one of the tubes and apply it before heading into the park.

"Absolutely not," the guard told him. "What if you get a rash? You might sue the Yankees."

Next, I suppose, is confiscating liquids at pools.

We've collectively lost our minds.

This story has a happy ending, though. A day after The New York Post published this story, Yankee Stadium reversed its ban. Now, if only the Post had that same affect on airport security.

It is a fact of life. Nations with stupid and corrupt politics have seen their clever people brain- drained away, to places where the cops don't shake you down twice a day. And jet-setters go everywhere. And properly so. If you're in a true global society, then you spend a lot of your time among aliens. Quite often you are the alien. You might notice that even Al Qaeda is a genuinely multinational group. They gravitated to wicked, lawless places like Sudan, Chechnya and Afghanistan, where the locals shoot you if you ask for a badge.

But what about all us bright, shiny, world-trading jet setters, huh? There are thirty percent fewer Yankees in Europe this Christmas, and that is bad. Let me pose the problem this way. If I am going into a Japanese restaurant in Japan, I would rather like to be able to haul out some gizmo and flash it at my fellow civilians, and have these kindly people understand with a high degree of likelihood that I am not a mass murderer. On the contrary, I am quite civilized, and I should be brought a beer immediately.

A platinum VISA card and a five-hundred-dollar suit will almost do that, but those are too easy to forge and steal, plus they are not very democratic. The UN should get together on this. We should have a high level summit about digital hardware support for the crippled tourist economy. Fear and ill treatment shut down tourism faster than anything short of open warfare. That is bad for all of us. Killing off tourism harms our civilization and impoverishes our cultures. People in civilized states shouldn't routinely treat one another as criminal suspects. I don't want to get done-over for three hours every time I get off a plane in London. When I go to London, I go with empty suitcases. I don't plan to stay, but I am better news for the London economy than a lot of the people who live there.

They should know all that that before I get off the plane.

Beware -Another non-security story. Last week I wrote a story about my son Landon and how proud I was about his experience in baseball. I used a Yiddish word that I learned from my Grandmother - naches. As I have gotten older I have developed a deeper admiration and respect for the inherent wisdom that my Grandmother brought to life and the many things I learned from her. I remember being younger and thinking she was a little bit meshuguna as she would say. But as I now realize she was crazy as a fox and I hope I can be only half as intuitively smart as she was. She had an intuitive grasp of people and life that cannot be learned in books. People who think I am outgoing and loud would think me quiet and shy in comparison to her. But enough about my grandma, let me get on with the story.

One of the phrases she used to use that I would laugh at was, "my grandson, you never know whose tomorrow it will be". I was never quite sure what that meant, but had enough of the general gist that I didn't question her. Today again I heard my Grandmother talking to me and saying that very phrase. I had contacted an old business partner of mine who I had not spoken to in 3 or 4 years. I knew he had season tickets to the Yankees and wanted to buy a couple of tickets to take my sons to the Stadium in this its last year. My old partner "Bob" called me back this morning, very early not realizing I was out in California. Of course I asked how he was and he replied that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a while ago. He has undergone surgery and is receiving chemo at Sloan-Kettering Memorial, but the prognosis is not good. Bob is just a few years older than me and his youngest child is just 10 years old. I have known Bob for 20 years. He was always the kind of guy who did the right thing. A good family guy, he grew up like I did on the Long Island-Queens border in NY from working class parents. He worked hard and bought a house in Westchester County for his wife, children and he. He lived the American dream, working hard and passing on to his children the best of what he knew. What are you supposed to say to someone who tells you this? Are there any words that provide comfort? Is going to a frigging Yankee game relevant here? Of course you try to be brave for their sake. You say things like "they are doing so much with that disease now. Keep your head up, attitude is important." Maybe most of all, I will pray for you. How cruel is fate that this good, decent human being has been chosen to suffer from this death sentence of a disease at such a young age? Of course Bob is not alone. Unfortunately I know too many good people who have been stricken with terminal illnesses well before their time here should be done.

I was speaking to a friend/family member the other day about the breakup of his marriage and I told him life is rarely what we think it is going to be. Making lemonade out of lemons seems to be the ultimate and eternal human condition. It also drives home my grandmother's inherent intelligence. You never know whose tomorrow it will be. I get it now, you never know for whom the bell tolls. All we can do is enjoy the good moments that God, fate or whatever grants us, because in an instant that can all be taken away and our lives changed forever. Bob is in my prayers and I hope for a miracle for him and others who have to face similar challenges. Lesson to you all enjoy the moment, cause you never do know whose tomorrow it will be.

Imagine Bob Sheppard's one of a kind voice booming over the PA system at Yankee Stadium. The words echoing off the hallowed stands that Ruth built, near first base where Gerhig stood, over the green grass of centerfield where DiMaggio and Mantle roamed. Ladies and Gentlemen, now hitting for the NY Yankees, number 60, Billy Crystal. For one of my favorite comedians, a life long dream came true for his 60th birthday.

It is no secret that Crystal who grew up in Long Beach, Long Island is a die hard, crazy Yankee fan. Today the Yankees probably made him "the luckiest man on the face of the earth", or at least since another Yankee said those words. They signed Billy to a one day contract and let him suit up and take an at bat in a pre-season game. Alas, the mighty Crystal struck out, but not before fouling a ball off down the line and running the count to 3 and 2. What a special event and great thing to do for a special fan. I can only imagine the goose bumps that Billy for sure had! Classy move by the Yankees.

This is the last year for the greatest sports venue in America, Yankee Stadium. I very much want to take my boys up this season to see at least one game in the old stadium. In the meantime if anyone really wants to make me happy, maybe you can finagle to get me a similar stint with the Yanks. If not I would settle for coming and playing QB for the Steelers for a play as well. But I guess I am no Billy Crystal, but I can dream can't I? Like Yogi says, it ain't over till its over.
